Rarely has one single family had such a profound impact on the success and growth of a non-profit organization as the Crawford family has had on Carousel Ranch. Simply put: Without the Crawford family, much of who we are today would not have been possible. And for the Crawfords it really has been a family affair! Over the past 16 years, the support of Wayne and Dianne, Kyle and Jeanna and Eric and Jacque has literally transformed Carousel Ranch. It’s been a family affair, with each member making unique and amazing contributions. Wayne’s early involvement included his support of our Fall Fundraising event in 2001 and 2002 - and even early participation in our first Make A Difference Day. But for us, the turning point was when somehow we ended up moving onto his block. We asked for his help with tractoring our arena and getting us set up in our “new home.” The rest is history. We could have never imagined that the friendship that began that day would lead us to where we are today.Wayne and his entire family has changed our organization forever! Wayne is honestly so very special to us – truly beyond what we can explain in words. He has taught us so much, been a mentor and guiding force through everything we have done and is someone that we treasure as a dear friend.

On that very first day, Wayne told us that he wanted his daughter-in-law Jeanna to get involved – who soon joined that year’s event committee and then the following year created what is now “Heart of the West.” We all know how that worked out, as today we celebrate our 15th Heart of the West. What you see today is a reflection of Jeanna’s vision, talent, perseverance and passion. To date, this signature event has raised over $3.5 million dollars. What can we possibly say but “wow!” Jeanna has been so much more than a board member and supporter. Once her first son Cassel was born, she needed to step aside for a short while. She handed us the reins, taught us what we needed to know and promised that we could indeed do it, even when we thought we couldn’t. She held our hands, never really leaving our side, while always carrying us along the way. Her passion has been unmatched and there has literally been NOTHING she wouldn’t do for Carousel Ranch.

And along with Wayne, Eric and Jeanna – we were blessed to have the entire Crawford and Stroh family by our sides. It is clear to all of us that the evolution of Carousel Ranch was truly made possible because of Wayne and Dianne and the legacy of philanthropy they have created within their family. What started with them has continued through not only their children, but grandchildren as well. And together, because of each of them, every dream that we’ve had has become reality. We could go on for days – listing far more than we could ever write here. But 12 years into this story, there was a twist that made our bond even stronger: the birth of Jeanna and Kyle’s beautiful son, Caynen, who was diagnosed with Our SCV Man & Woman autism. Being able to work with Caynen, 6, and having a of the Year Winners! small way to give back to this family has been so special. Christopher oochoachoa It’s been about a year and a half since Christopher, now four years old, started riding at Carousel Ranch. When he showed up that first day, what we saw was this tiny little guy, hooked up to an oxygen tank and hose and he was looking VERY fragile. Boy did Children’s he fool us or what?!? As you will see tonight, he certainly taught us all that you shouldn’t let appearances fool you because there’s definitely more than meets the eye with Christopher. 14 Heart of the West 2018 15 Andrew and David Thompson Andrew and David are the giggliest, sweetest and most loving 3-year-old twins you will ever meet. From day one they were happy and ready to ride their horse. We quickly realized they were the perfect choice to ride in the demonstration, representing the 15 new children who have begun riding over the past few months. In the words of their mom... “David is “Twin A”, a delightful and energetic boy with a heart of a warrior! He’s known by his friends and family as ‘DayDay.’ David was born with Esophageal Atresia, where his esophagus and stomach did not grow attached. Diagnosed with autism, speech delays and eating sensitivities, David doesn’t let anything get in the way of greeting everyone Luc King with a ‘hi!’ and a smile. We hope that riding at Carousel Ranch will help David grow in confidence, team work with his brother Luc will turn four in just a few weeks. In only a year, we “Andrew is “Twin B,” born one minute after his brother and have seen so much progress! On top of that, he brings so much diagnosed with club feet and epilepsy. Known by his brother as joy with his independence, sense of humor and the fact that as ‘DrewDrew,’ Andrew is a confident, thrill seeking, kind-hearted you will see, he is simply adorable. boy with the most contagious laughter. Andrew has spent most of his life in casts and braces to combat the club feet, but hasn’t His mom shares, “About 10 years ago I attended Heart of the West let that get him down. We are most eager to see him riding with for the first time. Watching the demonstration and listening to the Carousel Ranch, showing us one more thing he can do despite stories of these kids I was astounded by what Carousel Ranch was his setbacks and also we hope to see his language learning and accomplishing in their lives. Today I understand the value of what teamwork with his brother grow by leaps and bounds.” takes place here in such a meaningful way as I have watched my son grow so much through this first year. When Luc began riding, We can already see that Andrew is brave and fearless, willing he had been falling all the time and had major difficulties doing to try any exercise. Luc is unique in that he can verbalize what muscles are tight or hurt and we can work as a team to get him comfortable and stronger. Because of his imaginative and inquisitive mind, we are able to weave games and stories into his ride so that working those tight muscles is no longer a chore, but a game or made up adventure! “The benefits of Carousel Ranch go far beyond the physical. Not everyone shares the same view that you have of your child, especially when they have a disability. Here Luc is loved, appreciated and valued. At Carousel Ranch anything is possible for Luc. His instructor, Stefanie has been a phenomenal instructor for him! She matches his strong will, always challenges him and makes sure that he uses his manners.” The feeling is quite mutual, as Stefanie shares, “Working with Luc brings such joy to my week. He gets out of the car each week with a huge smile on his face as he power walks to the ramp, ready to go. His genuine love for his horse and the ranch reminds me why I do what I do.” “Carousel Ranch has been a Godsend for our family. Having a child with special needs is a unique journey that not many can understand. While we all have our hopes and heartaches as a parent, these look a little different when your child is atypical. In the last year at Carousel Ranch we have learned no matter the prognosis there is hope and the possibilities are endless.”

Tiffany Chairez Tiffany is 18 years old, diagnosed with autism and began riding at the ranch in July of last year. Tiffany is quiet and a little shy, but she absolutely loves the horses and her time at the ranch. It’s obvious that she would love to ride longer and be here every day if she could. She is kind and gentle, but she has a fearlessness on the horse that is exciting to watch. When she started the program, she rode on our big draft horse, Dawn, with a vaulting surcingle. We quickly saw that she was capable of performing numerous exercises on top of the horse with great confidence. Although she was a little nervous at first to do exercises like standing on the horse, she was so excited and thrilled by it. Tiffany recently transitioned into a western saddle, where she is learning to direct the horse independently with limited assistance keeping in mind there are other horses and various obstacles in the from her instructor Rachel. 18 Heart of the West 2018 19 a nother year of growth Thinking back to the beginning - or even to a few years ago - the programs offered by the ranch have changed and grown by leaps and bounds. The heart and core of the program has and always will be our equestrian therapy program. We are proud to share that in the past few months alone, we have added 15 students to the program. And while there are always going to be children waiting for services, we have made changes enabling us to get more children on horses. From a tiny little program that started in a backyard to where we are today, this program has truly come full circle. Today’s programming at the ranch enables us to take a student from the equestrian program in childhood all the way through the RTW program in adulthood, meeting their ever-changing needs along the way. equesTriAn TherApY At Carousel Ranch, no two therapy sessions are alike. The goals and benefits are different for every child, depending on their individual needs. The common thread, however is the amazing strides that we see these children make each and every day. The movement of the horse causes an inherent response from the child, relaxing muscles that are tight, increasing tone in muscles that are weak, building balance, coordination and control, increasing motor skills and improving in behavior and sensory processing. Carousel Ranch is unique as we work to create individualized goals for every student served. Each child is served individually, with up to four people working with each child. We strive to work on the same things that are being targeted in traditional forms of therapy, taking it out of a clinical setting and creating an atmosphere where therapy is disguised as fun. From the big - to the small, each achievement reminds us of the amazing effect that horses have on our children. These words from Genevieve’s parents say far more than we could hope to… “Being developmentally disabled since birth, Genevieve’s growth is a lifetime work in progress in countless areas such as coordination, balance, speech and simple concepts like following directions and social skills. For 21 years now, she has looked forward to her Saturday sessions with great anticipation, not only for her time with the horses, but with the staff and fellow students as well. Being at the ranch, the western environment has become a huge part of her personality and has been a wonderful influence on her character. It’s a big part of the caring young lady she has become. It has also aided her in learning discipline, since she is keenly aware that her sessions are earned through good behavior and not to be taken for granted.” “For all her life, we’ve gauged Genevieve’s progress in small but mighty increments. As a family, we never know what to expect next from her and it is such joy when we experience her doing or saying something we did not think would be possible Genevieve in the past. Because of Carousel Ranch and the motivation the horses give to her, she continues to surprise us, grasping new concepts and attempting new physical feats! Much of her progress we can directly attribute to Carousel Ranch and their amazing program.”

reADY To WorK! At age 22, young adults with disabilities “age out” of the education system. Some graduate even earlier. Horse sponsorship program makes a HugE difference At Carousel Ranch we couldn’t do what we do without each and every one of our horses. Each one is special in their own way and are hand chosen for each of our students. They all come in many different sizes and shapes and with their movement we are able to provide the type of therapy that we do. We are so grateful to the incredibly generous friends and supporters who participate in our “adopt” a therapy horse program - sponsoring them for a one year period. A Sponsorship is $3,500 a year...covering board, shoeing and basic veterinary expenses. We thank the following donors for their continued support. “Annabelle” “Gus” Sponsored by Jan & Rob Swartz (6 month sponsorship) Sponsored by Mercedes Benz of Valencia AVAILABLE FOR 6 MONTH SPONSORSHIP TONIGHT! Though young at heart, 18 year old Gus is a definite favorite Annabelle is a definite favorite at the ranch...how lucky are we at the ranch. He is one of our two Haflingers. This 14 hand beauty has quickly shown that when we needed her. Over the last 18 months Savannah she she’s got the stuff it takes to become an amazing Carousel has proven to be more than we hoped for…not only are we Ranch therapy horse. Despite her age and lack of “therapy” using her for our therapeutic vaulting lessons, but for our more training we’ve already found her to be calm & cool with all the independent riders under saddle as well. She is no “slacker,” crazy antics equestrian therapy asks of our horses. We’re so Savannah has shown that she loves to be out working in the very grateful that the City of Santa Clarita has provided us with arena and on the trail with students & staff. the grant to purchase this very specific breed of horse. “Earl” “Dawn” Sponsored by Renee Berlin & Allen Hohnroth Sponsored by The Riegler Family/Aspect Earl is a 11-year-old donkey with the heart of a lap dog. Quarter horses are known to be ranch horses and so it only makes sense that Cricket intuitively knows how to do his job at Carousel Ranch. While he is a strong guy, he isn’t one with too much energy and so a good fit for those students needing a calm, steady, consistent stride to get them from point A to point B. 52 Heart of the West 2018 There are many horses still in need of sponsorship here at the ranch. They can be sponsored for a full year ($3,500), half year ($1,750) or even 3 months ($875). Visit the “General Store” tonight for more information.

AVAILABLE FOR SPONSORSHIP TONIGHT! “Mookie” Mookie is a 17 year old Icelandic Pony who has been working at the ranch for 12 years. He was quick to move into not only vaulting and under saddle lessons, but as our only therapy horse that is able to pull a pony cart! Icelandic’s are very good natured and are bred as much for temperament as for their other attributes. His stocky & compact body, combined with his gaited movement allows for our smallest of students to receive the much needed sensory input during their sessions when riding him.

“Mijo” Unlike some of our horses, Mijo, a 22 year old chestnut Quarter Horse, had a loving home and previous career as a “movie” horse. Mijo immediately proved that he had the right temperament for the job and is used for many of our riders under saddle. He truly seems to enjoy his second career as a therapy horse and doesn’t appear to miss the excitement of being a “movie star”. VISIT THE GENERAL STORE TO SPONSOR A HORSE TONIGHT!
