In the summer of 1997 two women, Becky Graham and Denise Redmond, who had worked in the field of equestrian therapy for many years, decided to start their own organization. Their first client? Lilly Taylor Little Lilly has been riding at the ranch since she was just 3 months old! Her mom, Jen, had put her on our waiting list when she was only a few months pregnant after learning that she would be born with special needs. Those needs magnified when Lilly was diagnosed with Walker Warburg Syndrome, a form of muscular dystrophy which has a very short lifespan. In her mom’s words... There are no limits or judgments at the ranch.” On the horse we are able to work on things that Jalen works on in a traditional therapy setting - such as speech, confidence building, socializing, balance, coordination and motor skills. On the horse we’ve been working on laying on his back, which has overlapped into his swim lessons as well. Where he used to be afraid to lay back in swim, on the horse (and even on the ground), he now enjoys laying down on the horse and the bumpy ride! His mom explains, “Like all children, Jalen wants to try hard and be proud of himself. When Jalen started riding two years ago it was challenging and he worked hard for many months to adjust to this new form of therapy. As time went on it was clear he was gaining more confidence in himself and pushing himself more and more each week. Katie, his trainer, always talks to me about what has been happening with Jalen through the week and we set goals. Anthony Lanzara Anthony, now seven years old, was diagnosed with Cystic Bilateral Periventricular Leukomalacia or (PVL) resulting in quadriplegic spastic cerebral palsy. Anthony and his twin sister Lana have overcome many obstacles since they were born at 25 weeks - only weighing 1-1/2 lbs - and both having heart surgery at eight days old. Each day, we see many of the riders at Carousel Ranch are focused on the work ahead of them, but with Anthony it’s all about him filling everyone in on which Super Hero is doing what and the names of each Power Ranger (as well as their specific uniform color) - all while the movement of his horse is “secretly” benefiting his entire body. Equine assisted therapy is developing his core strength, balance, coordination - and most importantly the flexibility in his legs and hips - without him having to think twice about it, he gets to just be a kid and have fun.

His instructor Stefanie explains that Anthony’s determination to maintain his flexibility and gait is what makes him a joy to work with. During each lesson, Anthony will tell her where he feels tight and what muscle groups he thinks we need to work on. In his case, the horse truly does most of the work. The multi-planar motion of the horse walking works Anthony’s major muscle groups even when he himself is not working. Our main focus during Anthony’s lessons is to loosen his hips and strengthen the muscles of his outer thigh, in order to prevent his legs from “scissoring.” As you can imagine simply spanning a horse stretches Anthony’s hips gradually for the entire half hour. It is apparent at the end of 30 minutes how much looser his hips are. During Anthony’s lessons we also utilize the horse to stretch out his lower back. Ever Evolving Carousel Ranch...
They say that timing is everything. Here at Carousel Ranch that seems so true. From a tiny little program that started in a backyard - to where we are today. This program has literally come full circle. Today’s programming at the Ranch enables us to take a student from childhood all the way through adulthood, meeting their ever changing needs along the way. The addition of our Ready to Work! program has caused a transformation in our mission and today, Carousel Ranch is dedicated to improving the lives of both children and young adults with special needs. Through both our equestrian therapy and vocational training programs, we strive to create an atmosphere where every student can and will succeed... a place where therapy is disguised as fun. equesTriAn TherApY At Carousel Ranch, no two therapy sessions are alike. The goals and benefits are different for every child, depending on their individual needs. The common thread, however, is the amazing strides that we see these children make each and every day. The movement of the horse causes an inherent response from the child, relaxing muscles that are tight, increasing tone in muscles that are weak, building balance, coordination and control, increase motor skills, improvements in behavior and sensory processing. From the big to the small, each achievement reminds us of the amazing affect that horses have on our children. These words from Chase’s mom, Carrie, say far more than we could hope to... “Chase was diagnosed with Autism at 26 months. I can remember that day like it was yesterday. I remember feeling scared, heart- broken, faithless and hopeless just to name a few. I was scared for my son’s future. He had severe meltdowns, was very anti-social and couldn’t speak. Chase still was not talking at 3.5 years old. Fast forward to getting a call that it was our time to join the ranch. It truly was one of the happiest days of my life. To say the ranch and Mookie have helped Chase is such an understatement. Within a month of riding, I started to see extraordinary improvements in Chase’s behavior and speech. I owe Chase’s progress to Carousel Ranch and his horse, Mookie. He and the ranch have given me faith, hope, fearlessness and happiness again. I am so proud of Chase’s accomplishments and no longer fear what is in store for him. I know in my heart that Chase is going to grow to do amazing things in life.” 20 www.CarouselRanch.org Ever Evolving Carousel Ranch...
reADYreADY TToo WorK!WorK! At age 22, young adults with disabilities “age out” of the education system. This can be a disorienting and dis- empowering event that alters their routine, isolates them from friends and mentors and leaves them without a daily purpose and place to be. Though finding and securing employment can be very difficult, we hope that for our students, the RTW! concept will help to change that scenario - showing that each has the capacity to be contributing members of society. ready to Work! has two components: A classroom based curriculum teaching “soft skills” needed to be successful in the workplace. Classroom work is then brought to life through actual work in the “Tack Shack/Snack Shack” social enterprise, run by the students, as well as various jobs around the ranch (vehicle washing and maintenance, office work, horse care, construction, gardening, etc.) Continued Growth The program began with a pilot in June, 2016 and to date, 41 students have already participated with another session beginning in October. The Community is embracing rTW! We are already seeing our RTW! students being successful in the community. Three have already found paid employment, others are volunteering and businesses within our community are starting to offer work experiences for those enrolled. A look to the future As we move forward, we have so many hopes and dreams for RTW! expansion - serving more individuals, increasing job and volunteer placement in the community and the creation of our new “Ready to Grow!” Carousel Farms, where students will plant, care for, harvest and sell produce, herbs and even pumpkins that they grow here on site. “Your program has given us new hope! “Mookie” Mookie is a 15 year old Icelandic Pony who has been working at the ranch for over 7 years. He was quick to move into not only vaulting and under saddle lessons, but as our only therapy horse that is able to pull a pony cart! We are excited as this opens a whole new realm of possibility for some of our students. Icelandic’s are very good natured and are bred as much for temperament as for their other attributes. Stocky, compact bodies with short strong limbs together with a thick fuzzy winter coat, makes them tough and weather resistant.
“Norah” Norah is a 10 year old Norwegian Fjord who came in for a 30 day trial August 1st and this 14 hand beauty is proving she’s got the stuff it takes to become a Carousel Ranch therapy horse. Despite her age and lack of “therapy” training we’ve already found her to be calm & cool with all the crazy antics equestrian therapy asks of our horses. We’re so very grateful that the City of Santa Clarita has provided us with a grant to purchase this very specific breed of horse.
“Mijo” Unlike some of our horses, Mijo, an 20 year old chestnut Quarter Horse, had a loving home and previous career as a “movie” horse. Mijo immediately proved that he had the right temperament for the job and is used for many of our riders under saddle. He truly seems to enjoy his second career as a therapy horse and doesn’t appear to miss the excitement of being a “movie star.”

For 12 years she has been has just retired from his job as a Carousel therapy horse after 15 providing therapy to those students who are more adult sized years! In the lesson arena Pac-Man had an even temperament and/or those clients who were in need an instructor sitting which made him the perfect candidate for so many of our behind them. She has been a long time favorite both in lessons riders under saddle. Pac-Man worked hard each and every & demonstrations.
