From the big, to the small At Carousel Ranch, we believe it is true, as we see it first-hand every – each achievement reminds us of the amazing effect that horses day. Sean Amoroso When someone meets four year old Sean for the first time he cannot help but be a very cute, friendly, outgoing & a dynamic little boy. He was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome and began his journey at Carousel Ranch as a toddler under our physical therapist, Liz Bunkell, who provided his hippotherapy sessions. At the age of three, Sean transitioned over to our therapeutic riding program. Our treatment plan is a bit different, integrating a variety of goals which include improved speech, cognitive skills, increasing muscle tone, strength and joint range of motion. “Sean has been in many kinds of therapy since he was 14 months old. He has to work extra hard for many hours a day to do what other children do with ease. Carousel Ranch is a refuge for Sean! He does not think of riding his horse as work, but rather a special treat during the week; as soon as he’s done with one session he starts asking about how long until the next. Sean may see his weekly half an hour session as great fun, but it is far more than that. He has shown significant improvement in so many areas, such as his balance, strength, endurance, verbal skills, and social skills.”- Sandra & Greg Amoroso What may seem like small things to others are a very real issues for Sean. He has very sensitive hearing and in the beginning he had a difficult time whenever the horse would sneeze. It was literally was painful for him, causing a lot of anxiety. With time and patience he has learned to recognize that as a “silly noise”, and he now makes the sneezing sound along with his horse each time it sneezes. While riding Sean loves holding & rolling our big dice, he has quite the fondness for money and his new obsession is Ms. Katie’s dog “Burton”…he just cannot get enough of him. Sean has his strengths & his weaknesses, but we know it’s the combination of both that make him such an amazing and endearing little boy… his future is bright!! Cassidy Rogers Cassidy is seven years old and has been riding at the ranch for five years now. She is diagnosed with Perisylvian syndrome, a very rare nerve disorder, resulting in respiratory issues, difficulty speaking due to weakness or paralysis of face, jaw, tongue and throat muscles, low muscle tone and developmental delay. When Cassidy started riding at the ranch she had difficulty sitting up on her own while on the horse and needed a lot of physical support from her instructor. She now has built up enough strength to ride on her own, with assistance from her instructor and a spotter from the ground. Tonight, Cassidy is riding with her instructor, demonstrating a few more difficult vaulting exercises on a larger horse. Equestrian therapy is meant for a child like Cassidy. The movement of the horse builds her core muscles, not just her muscles for physical movement, but also muscles for speech, just by sitting on the horse while it is walking. “The week that Cassidy started riding, I remember saying to someone that all I wanted was to hear her say momma at least once. A few days after her first lesson, she said momma for the first time! Soon I noticed just after she would ride she would say momma or nanna. Since then, the girl who was never supposed to utter a word has been able to say at least two words on a daily basis and when feeling strong can even say a few more. In early spring this year Cassidy had surgery to lengthen her hip and hamstring muscles. The surgery left her very weak and unable to even hold a sitting position well, which is something she had no problem doing before. After being back to riding for only one week, Cassidy started to regain a lot of her strength. Every time she losses something from illness, surgery, or seizure she has regained continues on page 16 14 Heart of the West 2010 Visit Our Website: www.CarouselRanch.org 15 continued from page 14 screaming out of excitement all the way from the car. Cassidy loves riding her it back with the help of riding. We cannot thank Carousel Ranch enough for their horse, and all the hard work she is doing is disguised by her love and compassion dedication to these children. They have given them an incredible gift. They gain for this large animal. Riding her horse allows her to have a freedom of movement confidence and a freedom in riding that I don’t know how I could have given her that she doesn’t get to experience otherwise. Watch Cassidy closely and you’ll see otherwise.” - Jeana Rodgers her beautiful smile as her face lights up when on top of her horse her disability is When Cassidy returned after her surgery, you could hear her laughing and disguised.

Emma Clift There is so much to say about eight year old Emma. She holds a very special place in our hearts because she is so complex. Like so many children, she has been diagnosed with autism, which is difficult news for any parent. And just like all children given this diagnosis, her daily life is filled with obstacles to overcome, some more difficult than others. Emma has an innate ability to educate others. She allows us to work with her week after week presenting us with new problems to solve, new avenues to explore and causes us to look beyond our current methods. She has taught us to be more open minded & willing to go above and beyond. The following words written by her mother, are a perfect example… “When our daughter Emma started at Carousel in 2008, we had never been able to brush her hair without her screaming and having a tantrum. It was an everyday problem since she was a toddler. Becky and the fabulous volunteers at Carousel worked with Emma and within the first three weeks a miracle happened. For the first time in her life, they were able to brush her hair while she rode the horse without her screaming. You can’t imagine what a miracle it was to behold this simple task being done without a struggle. We are now able to brush Emma’s hair at home and continue to marvel at this simple achievement. The team at Carousel continues to work on helping Emma achieve her full potential and we are so grateful.”- Mary Clift Emma has created her own “flash cards”. She has chosen nearly a hundred random pictures and then created sentences or phrases about what she sees, typically things that we don’t take the time to see ourselves. While Emma is right at home on the horse (enjoying the movement and the freedom of space), she is typically not all that comfortable socializing or interacting with others. But when our schedule changed this summer and she saw her “friend” Katie waiting to ride on the bench, Emma literally exuded happiness. Her HUGE smile and the excitement in her voice about Katie being there, was all that we needed to begin the brainstorming process on how to use this opportunity to benefit both girls. This opportunity has shown us all that Emma is capable of so much more…friendships, partnerships, the ability to follow even the most difficult directions and concepts. She is not only in charge of her own riding, but has proven to see outside of herself (rare for children with autism) and is aware of what she needs to do in being of assistance to Katie as well. We are so proud of you Emma!!

Katie Kimes Katie is 7 ½ years old and has been riding at Carousel Ranch for five months now. At 2 ½ years old, she was diagnosed with autism, resulting in speech delay in some areas and some sensory issues. Don’t let this fool you though…Katie is a social butterfly who loves interacting with others, and notices the smallest traits about a person. We have yet to see a time where she is not smiling, whether it is interacting with her instructor and spotters, or singing and dancing on the horse, she is one happy little girl. “We weren’t sure how her first session would go because Katie had a fear of animals. We were very surprised to see her get up on the horse with a huge smile on her face and giggling. She didn’t stop smiling the entire time she was riding Annabelle. Katie loves to put her equipment away in the “tack house” which is funny because she hates to put her things away at home. Katie looks forward to going to Carousel Ranch and seeing her instructor, Katie, who our Katie has renamed “2 Katie’s.” It is nice to see our daughter get excited to go riding and see all her new friends that she has made at the ranch. We are so grateful our daughter has been given the opportunity to participate in this program.” - Kelsey and Amy Kimes With Annabelle and Katie by her side, Katie has overcome many of her fears. For her first few lessons she was very cautious about being on the horse and each exercise she was doing, telling us that she needed to be careful, and making sure that we were always holding on to her. Now just a few short months later, Katie has become somewhat fearless on the horse, demonstrating many of the exercises as if they were second nature to her. Today, you all can share in the joy this horse brings to this little girl.

16 Heart of the West 2010 Visit Our Website: www.CarouselRanch.org 18 Dana Sachs 23 years old, stunningly beautiful, college student, extremely intelligent, lifelong horsewoman, adventurous, full of life and always looking for a challenge…she is out to prove that anything is possible, you just have to try!! As the saying goes “The bend in the road is not the end of the road unless you refuse to take the turn.” It’s always amazing that year after year, Dana has overcome one more challenge that we’ve presented to her. It is really because of her spirit (aka hard-headedness) that we have to continually find ways to put those limits to the test. This year, Dana has assisted us in introducing driving as part of our work at the ranch, allowing us to integrate the horse in a completely different form. For now, Mookie is the only horse we are using for driving, and he and Dana have been working hard as a team to work out the glitches. While Dana is much more comfortable in a saddle (as this allows for us to “hit the trail” and enjoy the ride), she was more than willing to be our “test pilot” in creating a different and unique program for Carousel Ranch. The cart that Dana is riding / driving in was completely refurbished by the L.A.County inmate fire crews at Camp 11 in Acton. They not only repainted it “fire engine red” and reupholstered it, but created adaptations it in a way that would allow for Dana’s personal comfort. She was invited to visit & spend time at Camp 11, as they couldn’t wait to meet and present her with the cart - of course taking the opportunity to get some great photos with her as well. Dana is truly one who exemplifies... “Sometimes adversity is what you need to face in order to become successful.”
