A few times I have asked myself the same question, but I always end up with the same answer: it is small but oh, so complex and fascinating. Despite its smallness, it grows in complexity and importance the more one digs into the topic. The idea of looking at schwa in children’s speech came to me after a meeting with the Phonology Reading Group at the University of Tromsø. When it was time to write a research proposal, I presented the idea – still quite vague – to my supervisor, Professor Chantal Lyche. Throughout my entire PhD, Chantal has been in Oslo, on the opposite side of Norway, or on one of the world’s other continents, and has made a couple of visits to Tromsø each year. However, I cannot think of a supervisor more present and available to her PhD student. Since the very beginning of this project, Chantal has encouraged me to pursue my ideas, she has guided me to discover relationships in my data, she has pushed me to work hard on the tricky parts, and through her expertise in linguistics and her ability to see the common thread, she has made me write – and finish – a thesis where the different components connect.

Depuis un peu plus de trente ans, Lucens a la chance d'avoir des entreprises, des commerçants et des artisans qui se mettent en quatre pour organiser un comptoir. Un comptoir qui se veut être le rendez-vous de toute une région, avec l'ambition d'être intéressant, accueillant, convivial, et chaleureux. Une rencontre entre commerçants, artisans et clients potentiels dans une ambiance chaleureuse et bienveillante. Un comité dynamique s'est mis en place pour rendre ce comptoir 2018 encore plus fonctionnel et attractif. Plus grand que les années précédentes, avec plus de 60 exposants, le tout sur un seul niveau.

Table 2 displays the coecients for each individual referendum. In referendum 508, which proposed to close funding shortages in the pension and disability insurance system by raising the VAT rate, classication was not unambiguous a priori. On the one hand this may be seen as favoring bigger 1Referenda 329, 352, 354, 469, 470 and 486 on leisure are also used in Bruegger et al [2009]. Referenda 469 and 470 (again), as well as 354, 398, 416, 437, 492 and 528 are used as indicators of preferences for redistribution in Eugster et al [2011].
