Stevens: The Railroad Depot: A Photographic Essay THE RAILROAD DEPOT: A PHOTO ESSAY by R. Randolph Stevens From 1830 through the 1950s railroads were the tie, the sinew, that bound our country together. Pioneers first traveled by using the lakes and streams. Eventually, roads were cut, canals dug, and finally track was laid to connect the seaboard towns and cities with the interior of the country. This transportation revolution had little effect on Florida until after the Civil War when two Yankee railroad builders, Henry Bradley Plant and Henry Morrison Flagler changed the landscape of central and south Florida. Their investments and foresight brought ribbons of track down the west and east coasts over the next few years, sparking an economic boom. In 1883, Plant’s South Florida Railroad came into Tampa, and the west coast began to grow in earnest. Before long twin rails extended down to Venice, Boca Grande, Naples and Everglades City. -

Public Transportation plays a vital role in both the economic and physical health of our residents and offers great benefits to the community. The Transportation Trust is dedicated to its core responsibilities-- to provide oversight of the People’s Transportation Plan (PTP) funds and develop proactive plans that meet the challenges of improving public transportation in our community. My fellow Trust Members and I remain committed in safeguarding the public’s money and we work diligently to maintain their confidence ensuring that the half-penny transportation Surtax funds are spent as intended. We are excited about the accomplishments made with the half-penny Surtax thus far and look forward to continuing to fulfill our remaining promises by implementing the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Plan. Miami-Dade County desires to provide a public transportation system that keeps pace with the needs of this growing population and their transportation needs. I serve on the Transportation Trust because I believe in the potential of this community and residents of Miami-Dade County deserve a first-class transportation system. -

State agencies will further allocate other funds contained in the General Appropriations Act based on their own authorized distribution methodologies. This report includes all construction, right of way, or public transportation phases $1 million or greater that are included in the Tentative Work Program for Fiscal Year 2014-2015. The report also contains projects included on certain approved lists associated with specific appropriations where the list may be referenced in proviso but the project is not specifically listed. Preliminary Designation Report Prepared by: UM Office of Civic and Community Engagement ALPHA Plan, LLC This is a Preliminary Designation Report for the vacant office building at 1021 NW 2nd Avenue. The property is historically significant because of its association with Lawson Edward (“L.E.”) Thomas. Thomas, a civil rights activist and the first black judge in Miami-Dade County, used this site as his law office for nearly 30 years. He was engaged in a variety of groundbreaking civil rights campaigns and lawsuits throughout South Florida, including organizing a protest against the customary exclusion of blacks from Miami’s beaches and a successful lawsuit against the Broward County School Board in 1946 for unequal treatment of black students.
