The Vicar’s Letter The Vicarage, Waltham Road, (corner of Foliejohn Way) Woodlands Park Telephone 01628 822000

Dear Friends, Why celebrate Christmas? There are lots of possible answers to that question, and different people will naturally give different ones. Perhaps because we always have. Perhaps because everybody else does. Perhaps we do it ‘for the children’. Perhaps we do it because it reminds us of when we were children. Perhaps because it gives us a good excuse for a break, or a party. Perhaps because we enjoy the tradition of celebrating Christmas. Or is there something more? Research suggests that fewer than 1 in 8 people now know the Christmas story in any detail. Most will still know that it is something to do with the birth of a baby called Jesus — and of course we all celebrate birthdays, and most people like babies. But that still doesn’t explain why we should celebrate the birth of this baby. Of all the billions of births there have been down the centuries, why celebrate this one? Knowing the story of his birth — remarkable though it was in some ways — doesn’t actually offer that much more help. But it does contain some clues. The clues are confirmed by the things that he said and did when he had THIS MAGAZINE Published bi-monthly, six times a year. Delivered free to all homes in , and Woodlands Park. Freely available at church services. You will see that this edition of our magazine is a little slimmer than usual. This is because our Editor position is still vacant, but we hope to resume normal service next edition! Articles for the next edition should be sent to: [email protected] by 15 th January 2009 The magazines will be available by the last Sunday of the month.

Shottesbrooke and White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 1 grown up. But it was not just what he grew up to do that made this birth special. No. This birth was special because the baby — even as a baby — was special. Very special. In fact the truth of just who he was is too much for us really to take in. God. The God who made the world and everything in it. The God who made the whole universe, with its billions of stars and galaxies covering unimaginable distances. The God who made us. That God — yes, that God — entered his creation. Became one of us. Became a baby . It is truly mind-blowing, and mind-blowingly true, that the maker of everything — everything — came and lived, taught, suffered, and died among us. To show us what he is like. To invite us into a relationship with himself. And that really is something to celebrate. Have a joyful Christmas! David Andrew

P.S. If you would like to brush up on the story of the birth of Jesus then you can find it in the Bible — in the first two chapters of the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Or you could come to one of our carol services — see the details on p.6. You would be very welcome at any of the Christmas services mentioned there.

Our vision for Project Rainbow is to provide on-site facilities for White Waltham Church’s children’s activities, so that we can welcome and support the children and families of our Parish, nurturing our young people and enabling them to make the right decisions in their life. In the October/November edition of the Parish Magazine we told you about the work that we had done in the churchyard. We also explained that there would be a hearing held in the church on 15 th , 16 th and 17 th October when the church authorities would consider giving their permission for the project. In the event, the hearing only lasted a day and a half, and both parties have now made their closing submissions to the Chancellor of the Diocese. These submissions will shortly be available for you to read by following the Consistory Court link on the Project Rainbow page of the church’s website at www.stmaryswhitewaltham.co.uk . The Chancellor is expected to make his decision shortly. Once we have received it, his judgement will also be posted on the church website. If you do not have access to the internet but would like to read these documents, please do contact either

Tony Hill on 01628 822654 or Jenny Murphy on 01844 275261

White Waltham C E Primary School

As autumn sets in and the Christmas rush starts, I must reflect on our excellent Joseph production. The children, staff and parents put in many hours of hard work and when one watched the production and saw the enjoyment, confidence and learning that took place, you realise what a worthwhile experience it was, one that will form fond school memories. Not letting any leaves gather around our feet, we have been busy making leaf moulds with the Waltham Place staff and look forward to continuing this link by developing vegetable gardens in the spring. The children have also been keeping fit, playing many friendly netball and football matches. Children have also had the opportunity to compete in a hockey tournament. The school is also planning to mark St. Andrew’s Day with the four houses competing in our very own Highland games. Each term we continue to support a different charity. Since September, we’ve supported Feed the Children through our harvest gifts. We also had the opportunity to support Jeans for Genes Day by turning out in our denim, and we have sold Poppies for Remembrance Day. We feel it’s important that the children get an opportunity to reflect on those less fortunate than themselves through these different events. Our PTA has recently held a ladies evening, and it was good to see such a turn out of visitors from our community and beyond. December 5th sees our annual Christmas Fayre at school. Do drop in if you can, you will have the opportunity to purchase many

Shottesbrooke and White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 11 of those much needed Christmas gifts, and it will also give you an opportunity to see the school in its festive mode. Some more dates for your diaries, which we would be thrilled to have you at. Our KS 1 Nativity Play is on the 9th and 10th December. We are also hard at work learning carols for our ‘Carolling Evening’ on Tuesday 15th December meeting at 4:30 pm at the school and our school Christmas Church Service at 2pm on Wednesday 16th December. May I as always extend a very warm welcome to you at our school; we are always pleased to show visitors around our facilities. If you require any further information, please contact us on 01628 822533 or call in and see us, you are always most welcome. Isabel Cooke Headteacher

Maureen Hunt 01189 404808 [email protected] Paul Etherington [email protected] Hazel Wilson 01628 823610 [email protected] Once again, Christmas looms and the Council has sent notifications of the many activities in the Town Centre for Christmas – Christmas Italian Market 27 th Nov, Fairground rides 5 th Dec, Visit Santa for free 6 th Dec, Cinderella Pantomime at the Town Hall 9-13 th Dec, Christmas Carols 19 th Dec. to name but a few – visit www.rbwm.gov.uk for Town Centre Events. Whilst on the Royal Borough website you will note on the opening page in one of the boxes at the top – BUSINESS RATE PETITION. Shops and businesses in the Royal Borough have found that there will be a huge rise in their rate bills come April 2010. You may have seen the headlines on the front page of the Maidenhead Advertiser a few weeks ago relating to this ‘The last shop in Maidenhead put out the lights’. All political parties in the Council are so concerned with the effects this will have on Maidenhead & Windsor and have put a petition on line. I suggest you have a read of this and if in agreement sign the petition. ‘Safe as Houses’ was launched this week. This is led by the Community Council of Berkshire working with the police and the Royal Borough. It is funded by the Home Office Safer Homes initiative and it is to make the homes of 1000 most vulnerable people in the Royal Borough safe and burglar-proof (or as near as can be). Police Community Support Officers and RBWM Community Wardens will visit these residents and mark their valuable items using SelectaDNA. This is a marking system that shows up under special lighting and details who the owners are. Window shock alarms will also be installed and stickers on the windows and notices on street lights will warn burglars that property in these areas have been marked and protected. This Selecta DNA is very good (I bought one myself) and Supt. De Meyer welcomes the scheme that will lock out burglars and reduce the fear of burglary especially for our most vulnerable residents. It will make a difference and if you feel that this scheme could be a help to a vulnerable person you know, please let me know. Also, please be on the watch for any phone call saying you have won an alarm system worth £1,000. If you will pay the instalation charge of £299 etc. etc. We are affiliated with the police etc etc. Then there are the calls from security companies offering to carry out home security checks. Just put the phone down.

Shottesbrooke and White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 16 There are changes to the way benefits are calculated. Families on low incomes and people over the age of 60 could find themselves better off. • Child benefit will no longer be counted as income for housing or council tax benefits • The £6000 lower savings limit has been raised to £10,000 for over 60’s on state pensions credit. In a bid to help residents cut unnecessary energy use, lower carbon dioxide emissions and save money, the Royal Borough is offering energy monitors for loan. Energy monitors allow the user to see how much energy is being used at any one time and how much it is costing. Now 40 monitors are available to borrow from any borough library for up to three weeks – which should be plenty of time to understand a household’s energy usage and whether it can be reduced. The loan scheme is designed to help residents gain this vital information without having to invest in a meter which may not be needed after the first few weeks. The loan also includes an accompanying book packed with advice on green living. That’s about enough news from me but if you have any concerns that I can help with, please do get in touch with me. I wish you all a very safe and happy Christmas Maureen

THAMES VALLEY AND CHILTERN AIR AMBULANCE TRUST Appeal for Volunteers Did you know that because of increasing fuel and leasing costs, we must work harder to maintain our income levels to ensure we can provide our 365 day service to the three counties. This is why we need YOU … because… Volunteers give something very special to the work of our charity – they give us their time. After training, some give talks to interested groups spreading the word about what we do and what we need across the three counties. At fundraising events, place collection boxes in and shops, attend cheque presentations on TVAC’s behalf or help sell the charity’s merchandise at events. Why become a volunteer? We need your help…..

A volunteer will know the area and be local to the event that they cover. This helps the charity and keeps expenses to a minimum

Being local, a volunteer is able to spread the word about the work of the TVAC and raise awareness of our work

By giving your time as a volunteer you show commitment to the people of your county

As a volunteer, you will be a valued member of a great organisation and part of a winning team Don't worry if you have never undertaken any voluntary work, we can give you full training and information. It’s interesting and rewarding work for responsible people of any age, so if you’d like further information Please call Tony Allerton, our Volunteers Co-Ordinator on:

01628 511696 or e-mail him: [email protected]
