FC Basel 1893 visit Romania to take on FC Oţelul Galaţi looking for three points to keep up their pursuit of the top two in Group C. • With Manchester United FC and SL Benfica in direct opposition in the section's other encounter, Heiko Vogel's Basel know that victory against Oţelul would lift them level on points with one of that pair should there be a winner at Old Trafford. • Oţelul sit bottom of Group C but 's men have their own motivation – besides the ongoing search for their first UEFA Champions League points, they need a win to revive their hopes of finishing third and gaining entry to the UEFA Europa League. Match background • Having already earned draws at Manchester United and Benfica, Basel should travel to Bucharest in confident mood as they face a home team still without a goal at the National Arena, Oţelul's base for this maiden UEFA Champions League campaign. • Oţelul may be winless but they can take heart from having run the Swiss title holders close in their matchday one meeting. Back then they were within six minutes of claiming a draw before 's late penalty earned a 2-1 success for a Basel side under the charge of . • Oţelul will hope to repeat the result Basel suffered on their first visit to Romania on matchday one of last season's UEFA Champions League when CFR 1907 Cluj struck twice in the opening 12 minutes to set up a 2-1 success. Valentin Stocker got the goal that evening for Basel who won the return 1-0 through Federico Almerares. • This is Basel's fourth UEFA Champions League group stage campaign after previous outings in 2002/03, 2008/09 and 2010/11 but they have not reached the last 16 since their debut appearance nine years ago. • Outside of UEFA Cup qualifying matches and the UEFA Intertoto Cup, Oţelul have only once before participated in a UEFA competition proper. In the 1988/89 UEFA Cup first round, they beat Juventus 1-0 at home but went down 5-0 in the return in Turin. Team ties • As a Romanian international midfielder, Oţelul coach Munteanu met the Switzerland national team twice. He helped his country to a 1-0 home win in EURO '92 qualifying in November 1991 but later suffered a 4-1 defeat in the group stage of the 1994 FIFA World Cup. • Munteanu lined up against Swiss clubs FC Luzern and FC Aarau during his days with 1. FC Köln – earning a draw with the former and victory against the latter in UEFA Intertoto Cup ties in 1995 and 1997 respectively. • Only one member of Oţelul's squad, Sorin Frunză, has played UEFA Champions League football before. He made five appearances, two as a substitute, for FC Unirea Urziceni in the 2009/10 group stage and also featured for Unirea in the UEFA Europa League. • Frunză's Unirea finished third in their group and 25 years after FC Steaua Bucureşti lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup, no Romanian side has yet managed a top-two finish in a UEFA Champions League group stage – a trend Oţelul have been unable to reverse this term.

FC Oţelul Galaţi: Dorinel Munteanu Date of birth: 25 June 1968 Nationality: Romanian Playing career: Metalul Bocsa, CSM Resita, FC Olt, Inter , FC Dinamo Bucureşti, Cercle Brugge KSV, 1. FC Köln, VfL Wolfsburg, FC Steaua Bucureşti, CFR 1907 Cluj, FC Argeş Piteşti, FC Vaslui, FC Universitatea Cluj Coaching career: CFR 1907 Cluj, FC Argeş Piteşti, FC Vaslui, FC Universitatea Cluj (twice), FC Steaua Bucureşti, FC Oţelul Galaţi • Capped a record 134 times by Romania between 1991 and 2007 and part of the 'golden generation' that reached the quarter-finals of the 1994 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2000. • Nicknamed 'The German' as a player, not only because of his experience but also his serious approach as a hard-working midfielder, Munteanu moved up the ranks through several smaller clubs before Dinamo signed him in 1991. Won the Romanian title the following season and spent two years at Cercle Brugge from 1993 before four seasons with both Köln and Wolfsburg. • In 2003 Steaua took him back to Romania, but after a 2004/05 league title triumph he joined CFR Cluj as player-coach. In his first campaign, his team reached the UEFA Intertoto Cup final on their European debut. • During 2006/07 Munteanu left to join Argeş but was sacked before the end of the season as relegation loomed. Short spells at Vaslui, Universitatea Cluj, Steaua – his first head coach position after he had hung up his boots – and Universitatea Cluj again followed before he was appointed by Oţelul Galaţi in 2009. • In his second season in charge, Munteanu guided the club to the Romanian title for the first time in their history, also booking a place in the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League group stage.

FC Basel 1893: Heiko Vogel Date of birth: 21 November 1975 Nationality: German Playing career: SV Edenkoben Coaching career: FC Bayern München (youth), FC Ingolstadt 04 (assistant), FC Basel 1893 (assistant, head coach) • Had a low-key playing career, making several third-division appearances for Edenkoben but admitted he lacked application at the time; an injury prompted him to switch his attentions to university, where he studied sports science. • Was a youth coach at Bayern for nine years, meeting Thorsten Fink as the latter spent the final years of his playing career with the club's B team; the pair got to know each other better from 2005 onwards during frequent trips to Cologne, where they both attended the same coach licence course. • In January 2008 Fink asked Vogel to become his assistant coach at third division Ingolstadt; five months later the team won promotion to the 2. Bundesliga, but both were released in April 2009. • A few weeks later Vogel and Fink were on holiday together in Turkey when they learned of Basel's interest; initially said that landing the job would be like winning the lottery and on 9 June 2009 they signed the contract at the Swiss club. • Proved an immediate success, winning the double in the first season and landing another Superleague title in 2011. Vogel was in charge of coordinating training sessions and video analysis of future opponents until October 2011, when Fink left for Hamburger SV and he stepped into the void at Basel.

UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones • Holders FC Barcelona have avoided becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). • In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos FC on matchday one at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07 at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Barcelona and Manchester United FC have both finished as group winners on 12 occasions, one more than Real Madrid. • Four teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96) and Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage). • Twelve teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including MŠK Žilina and FK Partizan in 2010/11. The other ten are: Maccabi Haifa FC and Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), PFC Levski Sofia (2006/07), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06), Anderlecht (2004/05), Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively), Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group stage) and 1. FC Košice (1997/98). • Manchester United scored 20 goals in the 1998/99 group stage, more than any other side has managed. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage. • MŠK Žilina conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2010/11, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by Debrecen (2009/10), Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC in 1995/96. • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), AFC Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea FC (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal CF (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on matchday three of the same campaign. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before FC Dynamo Kyiv and Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06.
