Dorinel Munteanu will hope to recapture a moment from his youth when his FC Oţelul Galaţi side welcome Group C rivals SL Benfica to their home from home at Bucharest's new National Arena. • As a 23-year-old FC Dinamo Bucureşti Munteanu, in his first taste of UEFA club competition, helped his team get the better of Benfica's city rivals Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 1991/92 UEFA Cup first round. • The Oţelul coach will hope for something similar as he welcomes ' Benfica for what will be the first UEFA Champions League match played at the rebuilt National Arena. • The Romanian champions are looking to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat at FC Basel 1893 on matchday one, when Benfica earned a 1-1 draw against Manchester United FC in Lisbon. Match background • Overlooking UEFA Intertoto Cup and UEFA Cup qualifying matches, this is Oţelul's first home fixture in a UEFA competition proper since they took on Juventus in the 1988/89 UEFA Cup first round. They shocked the Bianconeri with a 1-0 victory, though the celebrations were cut short by a 5-0 second-leg reverse in Turin. • While Oţelul played that, their only previous home match in UEFA competition, in Galati in eastern Romania, they will stage their UEFA Champions League home fixtures in Bucharest. • Benfica have an impressive record in the Romanian capital where they are unbeaten in four previous visits. They drew with FC Steaua Bucureşti at the Ghencea Stadium in the 1987/88 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-finals and again in the 1994/95 UEFA Champions League group stage. The Lisbon club then faced Dinamo Bucureşti twice and won both times – 2-0 in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup first round, and 2-1 in the last 32 of the same competition in 2006/07. • Captain Luisão is the squad's only survivor from that most recent trip to Romania. • In last season's UEFA Champions League group stage Benfica lost all three away games without scoring a single goal. They recorded a win, two draws and a defeat in the four away matches that followed on their path to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals, and this season secured creditable draws at Trabzonspor AŞ and FC Twente in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds. Team ties • Munteanu's first outing in UEFA club competition was that aforementioned 1991/92 UEFA Cup tie against Sporting. He played every minute of the 1-0 defeat in Lisbon and subsequent 2-0 second-leg triumph after extra time in Bucharest. • Munteanu scored the only goal for Romania when they beat Portugal 1-0 in Lisbon in UEFA EURO 2000 qualifying in October 1998. He played in the 1-1 return draw too but suffered a less happy outcome against the Portuguese in the finals themselves, as Romania went down 1-0 in a group stage encounter. • Benfica's Óscar Cardozo came off the bench to score an 81st-minute winner for Paraguay against a Peru side who sent on Oţelul forward Daniel Chávez 60 seconds after his goal in a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Asuncion in October 2008. Chávez was an unused substitute when Luisão's Brazil beat Peru 3-0 in Porto Alegre in April 2009. • Luisão and Cardozo both played in friendly matches against Romania in June, helping their respective Brazil and Paraguay sides to 1-0 and 2-0 wins.

FC Oţelul Galaţi: Dorinel Munteanu Date of birth: 25 June 1968 Nationality: Romanian Playing career: Metalul Bocsa, CSM Resita, FC Olt, Inter Sibiu, FC Dinamo Bucureşti, Cercle Brugge KSV, 1. FC Köln, VfL Wolfsburg, FC Steaua Bucureşti, CFR 1907 Cluj, FC Argeş Piteşti, FC Vaslui, FC Universitatea Cluj Coaching career: CFR 1907 Cluj, FC Argeş Piteşti, FC Vaslui, FC Universitatea Cluj (twice), FC Steaua Bucureşti, FC Oţelul Galaţi • Capped a record 134 times by Romania between 1991 and 2007 and part of the 'golden generation' that reached the quarter-finals of the 1994 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2000. • Nicknamed 'The German' as a player, not only because of his Bundesliga experience but also his serious approach as a hard-working midfielder, Munteanu moved up the ranks through several smaller clubs before Dinamo signed him in 1991. Won the Romanian title the following season and spent two years at Cercle Brugge from 1993 before four seasons with both Köln and Wolfsburg. • In 2003 Steaua took him back to Romania, but after a 2004/05 league title triumph he joined CFR Cluj as player-coach. In his first campaign, his team reached the UEFA Intertoto Cup final on their European debut. • During 2006/07 Munteanu left to join Argeş but was sacked before the end of the season as relegation loomed. Short spells at Vaslui, Universitatea Cluj, Steaua – his first head coach position after he had hung up his boots – and Universitatea Cluj again followed before he was appointed by Oţelul Galaţi in 2009. • In his second season in charge, Munteanu guided the club to the Romanian title for the first time in their history, also booking a place in the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League group stage.

SL Benfica: Jorge Jesus Date of birth: 24 July 1954 Nationality: Portuguese Playing Career: Sporting Clube de Portugal, GD Peniche, SC Olhanense, CF Os Belenenses, GD Riopele, Juventude SC, UD Leiria, Vitória FC, SC Farense, CF Estrela da Amadora, Benfica e Castelo Branco, SR Almancilense Coaching career: Amora FC, FC Felgueiras, CF Estrela da Amadora (twice), Vitória FC, Vitória SC, Moreirense FC, UD Leiria, CF Os Belenenses, SC Braga, SL Benfica • Initially a midfielder at Sporting, Jorge Jesus enjoyed a long if low-key career with a number of smaller Portuguese sides before moving into coaching with fourth division Amora after hanging up his boots in 1989, leading them to a title. • More success followed at Felgueiras, whom he led from the third division to the Liga in successive seasons, though they were relegated in their third campaign under his command in 1995/96. • Further Liga experience came at hometown side Estrela da Amadora, Setúbal and Guimarães, though he endured another relegation with Moirerense in 2005/06. • Made a splash with Belenenses in 2006/07, leading them to fifth place in the Liga and the Portuguese Cup final, where a 1-0 defeat by Sporting allowed his side to compete in the UEFA Cup the following season. • Even better followed at Braga in 2008/09 as he guided them to UEFA Intertoto Cup success and subsequently the UEFA Cup round of 16. A fifth-place Liga finish prompted Benfica to lure him back to Lisbon in 2009 and Jesus rewarded their faith with the league title and League Cup in his debut campaign, retaining the Portuguese League the following season.

UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones • Holders FC Barcelona are bidding to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). • In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos FC on matchday one at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07 at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 11 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Barcelona and Manchester United FC have both finished as group winners on 12 occasions, one more than Real Madrid. • Four teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96) and Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage). • Twelve teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including MŠK Žilina and FK Partizan in 2010/11. The other ten are: Maccabi Haifa FC and Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), PFC Levski Sofia (2006/07), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06), Anderlecht (2004/05), Spartak Moskva and (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively), Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group stage) and 1. FC Košice (1997/98). • Manchester United scored 20 goals in the 1998/99 group stage, more than any other side has managed. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage. • MŠK Žilina conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2010/11, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by Debrecen (2009/10), Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC in 1995/96. • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), AFC Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea FC (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal CF (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on matchday three of the same campaign. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before FC Dynamo Kyiv and Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06.
