Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits. -

The following gen- era are the most diverse: Bembidion (47 species), Amara and Harpalus (21 each), Pterostichus (14), and Nebria (13). The subarid (35%) and boreal (32%) species prevail in the arealogical spectrum, while the mountain endem- ics comprise 13% of the fauna. The carabid fauna of SEA is heterogeneous in composition and differs significantly from that of the Western and Central Altai. The boreal mountain component mostly comprises tundra species with circum-boreal or circum-arctic ranges, while the subarid component (typical Mongolian together with Ancient Mediterranean species) forms more than one-half of the species diversity in the mountain basins. The species diver- sity increases from the nival mountain belt (15 species, predominantly Altai-Sayan endemics) to moss-lichen tun- dras (40, mostly boreal, species). -

Evaluation of Two Routes for Submarine Cables West of the Westman Islands

Introduction This report is a contribution to planning for the laying of a submarine cable from Iceland to the British Isles. At present (February 2007), the cable is projected to land on the Icelandic mainland in proximity to the Westman Islands area. The Path Assessment Group, commissioned by the Icelandic Ministry of Transport, is responsible for recommending a route for the cable. Further research will result from the recommendation of a route. This overview, created at the request of the Path Assessment Group, is an appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of two possible routes leading southward from the mainland south coast, west of the Westman Islands. The initial plan called for a cable landing at Landeyjar or possibly Þykkvabær. A later additional assessment was requested projecting a landing near Þorlákshöfn. Threats from both natural and human-induced factors were considered in the recommendation of a route for a submarine cable. These include: a. Glacial lake outburst flooding from Katla (or Eyjafjallajökull) and current turbidity b. Underwater volcanic eruptions c. Commercial fishing using otter-trawl/seine nets d. Contour and composition of seafloor (showing risk of a suspended cable and necessitated ploughing) e. Description and Reasons for Notification: This stretch of cliffs between Overstrand and Mundesley on the north-east coast of Norfolk provides a fine series of geological exposures in unconsolidated Pleistocene sediments and in the underlying chalk. These cliffs, which extend for a distance of 6.5 kilometres and are up to 60 metres high, are subject to frequent cliff falls and slumping. This mobility creates a mosaic of habitats from bare clay and sand to ruderal communities and semi-stabilised grassland with occasional seepage lines which support an outstanding assemblage of invertebrates. Four aspects of the geology of the site are of special interest; the chalk, the Pleistocene sediments, fossil vertebrates and mass movement. The chalk is exposed on the foreshore and cliffs in a series of blocks which have been thrust upwards by glacial action. It has a rich fossil invertebrate fauna which has enabled much of the chalk to be assigned to the Lower Maastrichtian stage i.e.
