• Evaluation of Two Routes for Submarine Cables West of the Westman Islands
PATH ASSESSMENT GROUP MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT KJARTAN THORS AND PÁLL EINARSSON: EVALUATION OF TWO ROUTES FOR SUBMARINE CABLES WEST OF THE WESTMAN ISLANDS FEBRUARY 2007 KJARTAN THORS JARÐFRÆÐISTOFU KJARTANS THORS EHF 1. Introduction This report is a contribution to planning for the laying of a submarine cable from Iceland to the British Isles. At present (February 2007), the cable is projected to land on the Icelandic mainland in proximity to the Westman Islands area. The Path Assessment Group, commissioned by the Icelandic Ministry of Transport, is responsible for recommending a route for the cable. Further research will result from the recommendation of a route. This overview, created at the request of the Path Assessment Group, is an appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of two possible routes leading southward from the mainland south coast, west of the Westman Islands. The initial plan called for a cable landing at Landeyjar or possibly Þykkvabær. A later additional assessment was requested projecting a landing near Þorlákshöfn. Threats from both natural and human-induced factors were considered in the recommendation of a route for a submarine cable. These include: a. Glacial lake outburst flooding from Katla (or Eyjafjallajökull) and current turbidity b. Underwater volcanic eruptions c. Commercial fishing using otter-trawl/seine nets d. Contour and composition of seafloor (showing risk of a suspended cable and necessitated ploughing) e. Marine currents The authors of this report are: Dr. Páll Einarsson, Professor Dr. Kjartan Thors Institute of Geological Sciences Jarðfræðistofu Kjartans Thors ehf University of Iceland Borgartúni 18 Sturlugötu 7 105 Reykjavík 101 Reykjavík , 2.

    (100) THE GANNET COLONIES OF ICELAND. BY BRIAN ROBERTS, M.B.O.U. THE following notes on colonies of the Gannet (Sula bassana) in Iceland are based on two personal visits in 1932 and 1933, and on one by my brother, Sub.-Lieut. P. L. Roberts, R.N., in 1934. There are at present six islands off the Icelandic coast where Gannets breed, and four of these—Brandur, Hellisey, Sulnasker and Geldungur, are close together in the Vestmannaeyjar, a small group of volcanic islands off the south-west coast. There is also a colony on Eldey off Reykjanes, and another on Grfmsey off the north coast. In his monograph on the Gannet (1), J. H. Gurney mentions all of these except Hellisey, which is the largest colony in the Vestmannaeyjar group, but the information he was able to obtain was scanty, and his estimate of the numbers was, in his own words, " open to amendment ". On August 18th, 1932, I visited the Vestmannaeyjar colonies in company with J. A. Beckett. A full account of this expedition, together with a map and photograph, has already been published (2), so a short summary only will be given here. It was too rough to land on any of the islands, but we were able to form a fairly accurate estimate of the number of breeding-birds by sailing slowly round each rock close under the cliffs. The method of assessing the numbers was to count all the adult birds on the rocks themselves. The census was greatly facilitated by the geological structure of the rock, which caused the birds to sit in definite rows on the ledges, and it would otherwise have been almost impossible to count them.

In 2013, a total of 69 vascular plant species had been discov- ered on the island; of these 59 were present and 39 had established viable popula- 5 tions. Surtsey had more than twice the species of any of the comparable neighbouring islands and all their common species had established on Surtsey. The first colonizers were dispersed by sea, but after 1985 bird-dispersal became the principal pathway with the formation of a seagull colony on the island and consequent site ameliora- tion. This allowed wind-dispersed species to establish after 1990. Since 2007 there 10 has been a net loss of species on the island.

The observed distances of 4.1 to 15.0 km appear to have been shortened from 12 to 55 mm during the 2 8 month interval but on only two of 11 remeasured distances, Storhofdi-Heimaklettur and Storhofdi-Alfsey, the shortening exceeds significantly the 95% confidence limit of the observations. The average observed contractional strain on all lines from Storhofdi is 4.7 x 10-6, and on all lines from Heimaklettur about 3.3 x 10-6. The 95% confidence limit on the average strain - is about 2 x 10 6 . It is concluded that compressional strain did occur in the Vestmannaeyjar area during the time interval May 1978 - September 19 80 and that this strain was greater in the southern part of the region, than in the northern part. Strain ellipses cannot be determined with any confidence. This compressional strain is inter preted either as the result of delayed subsidence due to 8 surface loading of some 5 x 10 tons of lava erupted on Heimaey in 1973, or due to contraction of the underlying magma chamber.
