Welcome to the Canterbury Year 7&8 Tournament Monday 21 September, Hagley Netball Courts, 9:30 – 14:30

Welcome to all participating schools.

This is our second tournament of 2020, and we are thoroughly looking forward to making it an exciting and enjoyable day.

We have 30 (!!) teams taking part, from eleven different schools.

Because we want to give the players as much playing time as possible, we will be playing on seven courts today!

It has been necessary to schedule two teams from the same school playing at the same time on various occasions. Where that occurs, if you need assistance to make sure both teams are properly managed, we will provide volunteers to help you keep things running smoothly, if required. Please let us know. Besides that we cannot avoid having teams playing two games in a row, though have kept this to a minimum.

Please make sure you are at the Hagley Netball Courts no later than 9.15am on Monday 21st September. You can park behind the Netball Centre!

Our most important is for everyone to enjoy the day. For some players this will be the first time they have experienced competitive korfball. We will be doing our best to sure a positive experience.

Thank you for being involved, have a great day.

Tournament Rules and Information

Game duration: • Games are 15 minutes in duration, with no half time. A - Grade Final will be 20 minutes. We will be using a stopwatch to keep time. • Once both teams are on court and ready, the referee can blow the whistle to start the game. • If games start late, teams will have less court time. To ensure the day runs to schedule, we will blow the airhorn five minutes before the start of each game – any games still going at that time will automatically end when the airhorn blows.

Set up: • In each game, the team named first on the draw is the ‘home’ team. • The ‘home’ team coach, and members of the ‘home’ team not on the court will sit on the left of the duty bench. • The ‘home’ team will put its players on court first, will attack the korf to the left of the duty bench, and will have the ball at the start of the match. • Team coach and members of the team named second on the draw will sit on the right of the duty bench.

Colours and numbers: • In the event of a clash of colours, the ‘home’ team will play in its own colours, and the team named second on the draw will wear bibs. • Each team required to change should use its own bibs.

Duty Each team has been nominated to take turns at ‘duty.’ For this, two players from the team named on the draw are required to assist the Korfball Cantebury volunteer on the duty bench. Responsibilities will be to ensure substitutions take place correctly by signalling the referee; and to keep .

Game rules: Games will be played with normal korfball rules – • eight players on court • two boys and two at each end (attack/defence) • change ends/roles after two goals • no running/stepping with the ball • no controlling the ball with the foot • no contact • players stay in their own division/half of the court • referee’s whistle starts and stops the game • no shooting while ‘defended.’

Substitutions: • Unlimited substitutions are allowed (ie players who leave the game are allowed to come back on later) • Substitutions can only happen during a break in play (ie after the whistle has blown to stop the game) • Substitutions must be made through the bench (duty) • Players are not allowed to substitute directly from one end of the court to the other • In the event of injury, if it is necessary to have a male playing as a female, or vice versa, this needs to be agreed with the bench (duty), the referee and the opposing team.

Toilets/water fountain: There are toilets and water fountains at the Hagley Netball Courts close to the Netball Centre building. We suggest everyone brings a good lunch and healthy snacks to keep energy levels up throughout the day.

Down time: This will be a long day and for parts of it, when you are not on court, you need to manage yourself properly so that you can do your best when it is your turn to play. If you are not playing, try to watch the games that are on.

General rules/conduct: • Pay attention to the referee and the volunteers: they are here to help make sure you have fun. They are also here to have fun themselves. • Put all litter in a rubbish bag or leave it in your bag – there might be no rubbish bins on the courts. • Leave the court as quickly as possible after your team finishes playing.
