SPORT AND SERVICE

Team sport and service go hand in hand. teaches the principle of ‘service before self’. That’s why we, as a school, are committed to providing sport as part of a student’s rounded education. Students learn to put the team’s interests before their own by playing and learning the values of team culture. We also provide a number of opportunities for pupils to serve more directly. The Sports Committee A group of year 13 students assists the sports co-ordinator to run the sports programme in the school. They help run lunchtime inter-form competitions, sports assemblies, sporting exchanges with other schools, open evening, the sports dinner and anything else that needs doing. Student Coaches Senior players are given the opportunity to coach junior teams. This not only helps the juniors, it is a very valuable experience for the coaches themselves. Officiating Our players sometimes called on to referee games in the Havelock North Intermediate School exchange with Masterton Intermediate and in Te Mata School’s winter tournament. In some sports, such as netball, much of the refereeing is done by players. Lunchtime games are mostly refereed by pupils. A number of sports offer courses for students wishing to qualify as officials. Those doing senior courses have the opportunity to learn to officiate and be assessed on their performance. SPORTS EXCHANGES Our players have the opportunity to meet teams from outside our own area in our annual sports exchanges. The summer and winter fixtures with Tawa College involve an overnight stay while those with Wairarapa College and Central Hawke’s Bay College are day trips. The new ‘Central Six’ exchange for juniors will involve day trips. The ‘overnighters’ are on a turn- about basis so students have the valuable experience of billeting and being billeted. The Central Hawke’s Bay exchange is for our junior players.
