Paddlers and Yu Mengyu took the Gold in the women’s doubles event, while Zhan Jian and Gao Ning took the Silver and Gold medals, respectively, when they battled each other in the men’s singles final. Another medal hopeful, 19-year-old swimmer Joseph Schooling, did Singapore proud by clinching the Silver in the 100m butterfly final, beating the national record. Meanwhile, in badminton, 25-year-old shuttler Derek Wong became the first Singaporean to reach the men’s singles final, in which he fought hard to clinch the Silver. And in another first for the nation, 25-year-old gymnast Hoe Wah Toon won Singapore its first Commonwealth Games medal in the vault event.
