PHILOSOPHY At Varsity College we believe the student experience extends beyond the lecture room. Our philosophy focuses on the holistic development of the student and we encourage a healthy balance between studies, part-time work and participation in a variety of sport, social, cultural and community engagement initiatives.

VARSITY COLLEGE SPORTS CLUB The Varsity College Sports Club is at the heart of all things sport on campus, and students wishing to participate in any sport need to be registered. The Sports Club is managed by the campus Sports Co-ordinator (SC) who works closely with the various Club Captains to make it all happen. Each of our sports is run as an individual club and is overseen by a Club Captain who is experienced, talented and passionate about their sport disciplines.

TEAM SPORTS For those who are more team oriented, Varsity College offers a wide variety of social and competitive team sports such as rugby, , football, netball and hockey, as well as action sports including netball, and football. An important part of our sports vision at Varsity College is to identify major team sports at designated cam- puses and create centres of excellence for these sports.

Varsity College is an active member of University Sport (USSA) and participates in a number of their different sporting codes such as rugby, water polo, surfing, swimming, netball, canoeing, golf, hockey and football. This ensures the opportunity for students to meet and compete against other universities at various tournaments and events.

SPORTS LIFE Sports Life focuses on outdoor activities that are fun, healthy and geared towards the individual. These include sports such as mountain biking, running, canoeing, surfskiing, surfing, golf and triathlon – the sorts of activities that once you start, you’ll likely keep doing for the rest of your life. Sports Life provides great opportunities for students to get outdoors and get active while meeting new people, and we encourage our students to participate at both a social and competitive level.

There are opportunities for students to participate in the top university rugby tournaments as well as the KZNRU league and competitions. Varsity College RFC is open to both students and the public and has two open and two U20 teams, with the 1st Team participating in the KZNRU Premier Division.

The Varsity College Hockey Club got the ball rolling in 2014, providing an opportunity for students from all three KZN campuses to become members of the club. With two men’s and two women’s teams, the club caters for both social and competitive players. Both the men’s and women’s 1st teams play in the competitive KZNHA Outdoor and Indoor Super Leagues. Our early success is largely due to our coaches’ dedication and expertise in addition to the hard work and effort put in by all our players. The highlight of the year is the annual USSA Tournament where our men’s team is in the A section and our women’s team are in the B section. Quality coaching produces quality players, and in the last few years Varsity College has had a number of South African senior national representatives and no less than 22 provincial representatives.

Varsity College’s involvement with football took an exciting turn in 2014 with the introduction of our own Football Club – Varsity College FC at the Sandton campus in Gauteng. Varsity College FC is open to students, alumni and the public. The club currently has a senior men’s team and a ladies’ team. The men’s team operates from Old Parktonians Sports Club and VCFC provides a platform for talented players to take their football careers to the next level. The male players participate in the Rand Central Local Football Association DSL premier league as well as in the Gauteng Universities Football League (GUFL). The club caters for both competitive and social players, and the club boasts a wealth of coaching expertise with international experience. In 2016 the 1st team won both the KZN Water Polo Knockout and League titles. It is an “open” club with an awesome student vibe. There is a great combination of social interaction and competitive edge in the newly formed Varsity College Netball Club.

06 SURFSKIING

Surfskiing is one of the fastest growing water sports in the world. This fast-paced sport allows students to experience the freedom of the ocean and keep fit at the same time. Varsity College offers surfskiing as a sport on campuses in Durban (Durban North and Westville), Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Each of our Surfski Clubs are equipped with surfskis and paddles, allowing beginners to get involved in this exciting sport without huge financial commitment for gear and equipment. Aside from the great social aspect, there is also a serious competitive side to surfskiing at Varsity College, with students taking part in various series around the country and internationally.

We’re also proud to have top class paddlers such as Kenny Rice (Cape Town Campus), Tom Lovemore (Durban North Campus), Cameron Hudson (Westville Campus), Dee Kotse (PE campus) and newcomer to VC Donna Hutton (PMB Campus) as Sports Life Club Captains. Their wealth of experience and passion for the sport is taking paddling at Varsity College to the next level! CANOEING

From a tranquil river paddle to the excitement of the white waters of the Dusi or Fish River, canoeing is an action-packed and healthy outdoor sport. Varsity College offers canoeing in Durban (Durban North and Westville), Pietermaritzburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, and the highlight of the canoeing calendar is the National USSA Champs that take place during the Fish River Canoe Marathon every year. The Varsity College Canoe Club is registered with Canoeing South Africa.

07 GOLF

Golf is offered at both a social and competitive level at Varsity College. Our social clubs are based at the Westville, Durban North, Cape Town, Sandton, Waterfall and Pretoria campuses. Each club has relationships with local driving ranges, where the clubs practice on a weekly basis. The clubs are run by experienced captains who are able to assist beginners with the basics, as well as take more advanced players to the next level. For those more competitive golfers, there is an opportunity to represent Varsity College at the annual USSA golf Championships, where the top 8 golfers from Varsity College campuses around the country compete against other tertiary institutions. At the 2015 USSA Champs Varsity College won gold in the stroke play competition and silver in the match play rounds. 2016 saw the team win silver in the stroke play competition and both teams placed in the top 6 in the country.

08 SURFING

With outposts in Cape Town, Durban North and Westville, the Varsity College Surfing Clubs boast captains that are among South Africa’s most talented surfers. Most of our campuses offer a “Learn to Surf” program for those just getting started, and surfboards are provided for those who don’t yet have their own. Advanced sessions are available for experienced surfers, as is the opportunity to represent Varsity College at the annual USSA surfing event in Bay, where some of the best in the country compete and where Varsity College has built a formidable reputation. In the last 3 years our team has achieved podium placings. Yet it is in the individual results that they’ve shown complete dominance, winning numerous gold medals. This talent, passion and dedication is what feeds the Varsity College Surfing Club.

09 MOUNTAIN BIKING

Mountain Biking (MTB) is an exhilarating sport offered at most Varsity College campuses. With talented and enthusiastic Club Captains overseeing these clubs, this sport is enjoyed by beginners, advanced and experienced riders alike. Equipment – including bikes and helmets – is available at each campus for new riders who don’t yet have their own gear.

The club participates in a number of events such as the USSA MTB championships, National NTB Series and many more.

Experienced and social MTB club members are encouraged to join the Varsity College MTB Club on STRAVA, the online mobile fitness tracking app, where you can compete against members from your own campus club or with students from around the country. Weekly and monthly prizes are up for grabs – making it both fun and competitive at the same time.

10 RUNNING AND TRIATHLON

Running is a great way to meet people and keep fit at the same time. Many campus’ Sports Clubs use the weekly running club sessions as fitness training for students wanting to stay on top of their game. Running also provides a great launch pad into Triathlon offered in KZN and Gauteng, and Obstacle Course Racing offered at the Waterfall campus. These multi-disciplined events create great comradery when students combine with other Sports Club members in the team events. This means students don’t have to be proficient or experienced as individuals to participate.

Trail running offers students the opportunity to experience some of the most beautiful landscapes our country has to offer, with the club catering for both beginners and more seasoned runners.

Experienced and social runners (both road and trail) are encouraged to join the Varsity College Running Club on STRAVA, the online mobile fitness tracking app, where you can compete against members from your own campus club or with students from around the country.
