Conventions Were Outraged: Country, House, Fiction Kristen Kelly Ames A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN ENGLISH YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO June 2014 © Kristen Kelly Ames, 2014 ii ABSTRACT The dissertation traces intersections among subjectivity, gender, desire, and nation in English country house novels from 1921 to 1949. Inter-war and wartime fiction by Daphne du Maurier, Virginia Woolf, Nancy Mitford, P. G. Wodehouse, Elizabeth Bowen, and Evelyn Waugh performs and critiques conventional domestic ideals and, by extension, interrupts the discourses of power that underpin militaristic political certainties. I consider country house novels to be campy endorsements of the English home, in which characters can reimagine, but not escape, their roles within mythologized domestic and national spaces. The Introduction correlates theoretical critiques of nationalism, class, and gender to illuminate continuities among the naïve patriotism of the country house novel and its ironic figurations of rigid class and gender categories. Chapter 1 provides generic and critical contexts through a study of du Maurier’s Rebecca, in which the narrator’s subversion of social hierarchies relies upon the persistence, however ironic, of patriarchal nationalism. That queer desire is the necessary center around which oppressive norms operate only partially mitigates their force. Chapter 2 examines figures of absence in “A Haunted House,” To the Lighthouse, and Orlando. Woolf’s queering of the country house novel relies upon her Gothic figuration of Englishness, in which characters are only included within nationalist spaces by virtue of their exclusion. -

Bové Dissertation Director ii THE SEDUCTIVE FALLACY: WOMEN AND FASCISM IN BRITISH DOMESTIC FICTION Judy Suh, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2004 “The Seductive Fallacy” provides a literary focus for feminist critiques of fascist gender and sexuality. It explores two fascist and three anti-fascist novels—Wyndham Lewis’ The Revenge for Love (1937), Olive Hawks’ What Hope for Green Street? (1945), Virginia Woolf’s The Years (1937), Phyllis Bottome’s The Mortal Storm (1938) and The Lifeline (1946)—that illuminate British domestic fiction’s rhetorical range in the prolonged crisis of liberal hegemony after World War I. Across political purposes and a range of readerships and styles, they illuminate the genre’s efficacy to theorize modern women’s social, political, and cultural agency. In particular, the dissertation’s critical readings of these novels explore fascism’s emergence within liberal democracies. Juxtaposing Lewis and Hawks with literature from the archives of the British Union of Fascists (BUF), the first two chapters stress fascism’s production and consumption of political fantasies prevalent throughout the British novel’s humanist tradition, especially notions of women’s agency inscribed in the traditions of nineteenth- and twentieth-century domestic literature. -
The Evelyn Waugh Circle
The Evelyn Waugh Circle Acton, Sir Harold (1904-94), of Anglo-American parentage, was at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford and spent most of his life at the family horne, La Pietra, near Florence. As well as poems, novels and historical works, he published Memoirs of an Aesthete (1948), More Memoirs (1970) and a memoir of Nancy Mitford (1975). Asquith, Katharine (1885-1977), nee Horner, married (1907) Raymond Asquith (killed in action 1916), eldest son of H.H. Asquith, Prime Minister. A Roman Catholic convert, she lived at the Manor House, Mells, Somerset, inherited from her father, Sir John Horner; from 1949 Ronald Knox also lived there, and EW was a frequent visitor to the house. Balfour, Patrick (1904-77), author and journalist, was educated at Winchester and Balliol College, Oxford, and succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Kinross in 1939. As an Evening Standard corre spondent, he covered the war in Abyssinia. The character of Lord Kilbannock in the Sword of Honour trilogy is based on Balfour. Baxter, Beverley (1891-1964), born and educated in Canada, be came a journalist in England and served for many years on the staff of the Daily Express. Later he served as a Member of Parlia ment (1935-50) and was knighted in 1954. Beaton, Cecil (1904-80), photographer and stage designer. Educated at Harrow and Cambridge. Knighted in 1972. Beerbohm, Max (1872-1956), essayist, dramatic critic, parodist and caricaturist, greatly admired by EW from boyhood onwards. He lived mainly in Italy after his marriage in 1910, but often visited England. Bell, Clive (1881-1962), writer on art and a member of the Bloomsbury Group, married (1907) Vanessa Stephen, herself an artist and a sister of Virginia Woolf. -

National Identity in Crisis: Post-1990 Holocaust Cinema in Israel, Germany, and Hollywood Gary Jenkins Thesis for the qualification of Doctor of Philosophy School of Modern Languages, Newcastle University January 2017 ii Abstract Taking a comparative approach, my PhD thesis investigates the relationship between recent cinematic representations of the Holocaust in Israel, Germany, and Hollywood, and formations of national identity. Focusing on the ways in which specific political and cultural factors shape dominant discourses surrounding the Nazis’ attempt to destroy the European Jewry, I argue that the Holocaust is central to a crisis in national identity in all three countries. Whereas Holocaust films have traditionally reinforced the socio-political ideals informing the context of their production, however, the analysis of my central corpus demonstrates that this cinema can also be seen to challenge dominant discourses expressing the values that maintain established notions of national identity. Central to this challenge is the positioning of the nation as either a victim or perpetrator with regards to the Holocaust. The presentation of opposing narratives in my central corpus of films suggests a heterogeneity that undermines the tendency in dominant discourses to present victim and perpetrator positions as mutually exclusive. The trajectory from one position to its opposite is itself informed by generational shifts. As a consequence, I also discuss the perspectives offered by members of the second and third generations whose focus on particular aspects of the Holocaust challenge the discourses established by the previous one. By way of conclusion, I focus on the transnational aspect of Holocaust film. In highlighting a number of commonalities across the three cinemas discussed in my thesis, I argue that in addition to expressing themes that relate to the issue of national identity, these films also suggest the construction of ‘identity communities’ that exist beyond state borders. -

The British Aristocracy Torn between the House of Lords and the Mosley Movement KARINA URBACH At the height of the Nuremberg trials the British ambassador to Washington, Lord Halifax, wrote to the Duchess of Portland: 'My dearest Ivy, I am amused with you saying that some of the peers are apprehensive of being summoned to give evidence at Nuremberg.'' At a time when his fellow aristocrats were still living in fear, Halifax had already received a summons: 'Goering has requested me and Alex Cadogan to go and testify to how earnest a seeker of the peace he was up to the war.'2 Of course Halifax, the foreign secretary closely associated with appease- ment, was used to being showered by invitations from Nazis;3 yet why did other peers seriously fear that they might also be summoned to a war crimes tribunal? To this day it is difficult to estimate the number of British nobles with leanings to the radical right. -

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PSYCHOTHERAPY, VOL. 7, NO. 3, 2002 The mortal storm: righteousness and compassion in moral con ict CARL GOLDBERG Abstract I am concerned here with those defects in moral development that inform our serious social problems. In recent times three widespread social outrages have severely shaken trust in the moral ber of American society. Declaration by public of cials together with citizen outcry suggest that the solution to these problems—and by implication, the reparation of American society’s moral failings—is to strengthen the observational and punishing components of the superego of the American psyche. I strongly contend that strengthening the demands of the American superego will not accomplish the moral readdress of serious social problems. Clinical evidence is offered to argue that every society since the beginning of time—including prison populations—have a strong code of morality—emphasizing proper behavior. This morality has not prevented any society from cruelty by its members towards strangers and fellow citizens alike. By means of an assessment of the clinical data of interviews and psychological tests of Adolph Eichmann and other high Nazi of cials tried at Nuremberg, it is shown that there are two very different codes of morality. One of these I term ‘re uent’ (superego) morality and the other ‘re ective consciousness’ (conscience) morality. Conse- quently, what differentiated the ‘good’ Nazi and the other destructive people was not a lack of re uent morality, but a de ciency of re ective consciousness. Empirical studies and literary sources are provided to indicate how conscience develops and the factors that impede this crucial moral sense. -

Dates: c. 1925 onwards Extent: 22 boxes Administrative / biographical history: This Collection has been assembled as support for both research and teaching at the University of Sheffield, principally within the Department of History, on political movements in 20th century Britain. It began with the acquisition of complete sets of The Fascist Quarterly and The British Union Quarterly. Other items, including journals such as Action, The Blackshirt, and Union, and unpublished memoirs of former members of the British Union, together with other related material, have gradually been added. Oswald Ernald Mosley (Sir Oswald on succeeding to the baronetcy as 6th Baronet in 1928) was born into a landed family of Rolleston, Staffordshire in 1896, his father being Sir Oswald Mosley, 5th Bart. After leaving Winchester School at the age of 16 he entered Sandhurst, and following the outbreak of the First World War was commissioned into the 16th Queen’s Light Dragoons, but then applied to join the Royal Flying Corps and was posted to the Front. Back in England to take his pilot’s certificate his leg was injured in a flying accident. He was recalled to his former regiment, but his damaged leg was affected by conditions in the trenches, and he was invalided out of the war in 1916. -
A Study of Roy Campbell As a South African Modernist Poet
A Study of Roy Campbell as a South African modernist poet Alannah Birch Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of D.Litt University of the Western Cape May 2013 Supervisor: Prof. A.N. Parr Abstract Roy Campbell was once a key figure in the South African literary canon. In recent years, his poetry has faded from view and only intermittent studies of his work have appeared. However, as the canon of South African literature is redefined, I argue it is fruitful to consider Campbell and his work in a different light. This thesis aims to re-read both the legend of the literary personality of Roy Campbell, and his prose and poetry written during the period of “high” modernism in England (the 1920s and 1930s), more closely in relation to modernist concerns about language, meaning, selfhood and community. It argues that his notorious, purportedly colonial, “hypermasculine” personae, and his poetic and personal explorations of “selfhood”, offer him a point of reference in a rapidly changing literary and social environment. Campbell lived between South Africa and England, and later Provence and Spain, and this displacement resonated with the modernist theme of “exile” as a necessary condition for the artist. I will suggest that, like the Oxford dandies whom he befriended, Campbell’s masculinist self-styling was a reaction against a particular set of patriarchal traditions, both English and colonial South African, to which he was the putative heir. His poetry reflects his interest in the theme of the “outsider” as belonging to a certain masculinist literary “tradition”. But he also transforms this theme in accordance with a “modernist” sensibility.
