Paolo Colombo, General Chair, The University of Padova, Italy As the Local Chair, it is my privilege and pleasure to host you to ECerS XVI, which takes place in Torino, a place of history and passion; it has a rich culture and history, from Romanic settlements until today; it was the first capital city of our Country in 1861 and it is well known for its numerous palaces, churches, squares, museums. I am pleased to remember Europe’s largest collection of archaeological finds at the Museo Egizio, as well as the more recent history of the ‘seventh art’ at the National Museum of Cinema, the exceptional treasure of ancient art held in Palazzo Madama, and finally the Royal Palace of the Savoy Dynasty. Turin is also a vital point of reference for contemporary art: works and installations produced over the last thirty years by internationally famous artists are placed for all to see in the open air or on display at the Country’s most important Museum of Contemporary Art within the 17th Century Castle of Rivoli. Torino has also an exceptional culinary tradition with delicious foods, handmade chocolates and top-level red wines. Finally, Torino is a place of innovation and high-tech; it is the Italian home of the automotive industry (Fiat-Chrysler, Maserati...) and of industrial design (Italdesign Giugiaro, Pininfarina...). The hosting Institution is the Politecnico di Torino, a leading technical University in the field of engineering, architecture and industrial design, founded in 1859. Tradition combines with innovation to make our campus, hosting around 32,000 students, a stimulating environment offering a wealth of opportunities. Politecnico di Torino also has a long, well-reputed tradition of research and innovation in the field of ceramics: many researchers are active on traditional as well as on advanced ceramic materials and they will be keen to welcome you in their labs for a visit and discussion. The Conference is held in the so-called “Cittadella Politecnica”, a new campus area where research, teaching and training go hand in hand with local and student services as well as financial and cultural activities. It also houses the Business Research Center, where various international companies have established their most advanced research centers. One of the Conference Sessions will take place at the Valentino’s Castle, which hosts our School of Architecture, and is inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list. We all hope to make your stay in Torino an unforgettable one! Welcome to Torino!
