Unlike almost all the other contributions, it is far more than an informative chronicle. It is a work of history in its own right and falsely described as a Life of Alexander 111. Boso's work is in fact a history of the Iong schism in the church brought about by the double election of I159 and perpet- uated until the Peace of Venice in I 177. It makes no claim to be a Life of Alexander because it not only says nothing about his career before his election but also purposely omits all those events and activities of his pontificate which do not strictly belong to the history of the schism. It ends with Alexander's return to Rome in 1176. Some historians have imagined that this ending was enforced by Boso's death which is supposed to have taken piace in 1178.~But there is no need for such a supposition. -

WATER AND NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE 2012 INTERIM FINAL REPORT to the FIFTIETH LEGISLATURE SECOND SESSION New Mexico Legislative Council Service Santa Fe, New Mexico December 2012 WATER AND NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE 2012 REPORT Santa Fe, New Mexico December 2012 2012 LEGISLATIVE INTERIM WATER AND NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE SUMMARY OF WORK The committee scheduled five meetings during the 2012 interim that were held in Las Cruces, Truth or Consequences, Ruidoso, Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Continued drought and major wildfires again dominated the news in 2012. Through November 2012, the average precipitation for New Mexico was near the record lowest value, ranking as the second driest since 1895, as severe to exceptional drought continued across New Mexico, and the average temperature for the state for the year was the highest on record. It was also the second consecutive year during which record-breaking wildfires burned across the state. The lightning-sparked Whitewater-Baldy Complex Fire in the Gila Wilderness burned more than 297,845 acres, which surpassed the area burned by the Las Conchas Fire of 2011, making it the largest wildfire in New Mexico state history. The Little Bear Fire was also started by a lightning strike; it burned 44,330 acres and 254 buildings in Lincoln County after quickly growing out of control due to dry, windy conditions. The city of Ruidoso and the surrounding area will need more than $14 million in the coming years to address the effects of that fire on their drinking water supplies alone. At the committee's joint meeting in August with the Courts, Corrections and Justice Committee, the committees reviewed several legal issues of concern to both committees, including the state's suit against the federal Bureau of Reclamation on its administration of Rio Grande Project water, implementation of the Pecos River Settlement, the status of ongoing adjudications and the need for spaceport liability legislation. -

Guggenheim Foundation After years spent carefully studying and researching a prized blue-chip collection of postwar art acquired from a private collector, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is getting ready to share its findings with the rest of the world. The museum has embarked on the third and final phase of a years-long collaboration with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that the New York Times has described as “one of the most ambitious conservation projects ever to address the deep uncertainties raised by Minimalism and Conceptualism.” The endeavor marks the first time the field has sought to reach consensus on how to display and preserve artwork that might otherwise exist only as a diagram or an idea. ADVERTISING inRead invented by Teads Now, the Mellon Foundation is awarding the project a hefty grant of $750,000 (following the first two phases, which were funded by awards of $1.25 million and $1.23 million, respectively). The so- called Panza Collection Initiative has been quietly chugging along since 2010 and centers on the study of the most perplexing, fragile, and intellectually confounding works the museum purchased in the early ’90s from controversial Italian collector Count Giuseppe Panza di Biumo. -

The Lightning Field Walter De Maria Catron County, NM, USA On a high desert plain in western New Mexico, Walter De Maria (b.1935) had 400 stainless-steel poles installed as lightning rods. Each of the polished metal poles is spaced about 67 m (220 ft) apart, and together the 16 rows of 25 poles form a grid measuring 1.6 × 1 km (1 × 0.62 miles). The poles are all 5 cm (2 in ) in diameter but they vary in height from 4.5 to 7.9 m (14.8 to 25.9 ft) and are installed into the earth at varying depths so that their tips form a level plane regardless of the fluctuations in height of the uneven desert ground below. However, the art of this work is not to be found in the form of the grid, but in its interaction with the forces of nature. The Dia Art Foundation, who originally commissioned the work, continues to maintain the site and provide transport and overnight accommodation for visitors with advance reservations. During the visiting season, which runs from May until the end of October, up to six people at a time can stay for one night in a wooden cabin at the site. One can never predict when lightning will strike, but when a storm does occur it is an awesome phenomenon to behold. Striking the terrain not far from the viewers’ cabin, the lightning bolts provide a sublime, fearsome and breathtaking experience. When a lightning storm is not raging, the site still provides visitors with a beautiful and contemplative experience. -

When my wife Giovanna and I discover works by a new artist, I look at her and she looks at me. I can see in her eyes if she wants to buy or not. So even between my wife and me, ‘looking’ is an issue.” Giuseppe Panza, 20091 Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, along with his wife Giovanna, is recognized as one of the world’s foremost collectors of contemporary art. The collection, originally composed of around 2,500 works of art, is mainly representative of the most significant developments in American art from post- World War II to the 21st century. Along with a need to fulfill spiritual and inner quests, both intuition and reflection have inspired the collectors’ choice that would demonstrate, retrospectively, their far- sightedness. By devoting themselves to an in-depth focus on emerging artists and specific creative periods, the Panzas contributed to acknowledging the new art forms among both the general public and the art market. The Beginnings of the Collection: On the Road to America The collection ideally began in 1954 when Giuseppe, at the age of thirty years, traveled to South America and the United States, from New York to Los Angeles, where he discovered the continents’ captivating vitality of economy and culture. Upon his return to Milan, he felt the need to take part in the international cultural milieu. In 1955, shortly after his marriage with Giovanna Magnifico, Giuseppe purchased his first work of art by Italian abstract painter Atanasio Soldati. -

Press release WILLIAM KENTRIDGE Preparing the Flute Opening Wednesday 16 November 2005, 5.00 pm – 9.00 pm, Galleria Lia Rumma Naples, Via Vannella Gaetani, 12 Tel.+39.081.7643619, Fax+39.081.7644213 e-mail [email protected] –web: www.gallerialiarumma.it Gallery opening times: from Tuesday to Friday from 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm – on other days by appointment During 2005, William Kentridge was responsible for the sets and the direction of The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for the opening of the new season of Brussels La Monnaie/De Munt Opera House, as part of an initiative promoted by the same theatre with Foundation of the San Carlo Opera House in Naples, the Lille Opera House and the Theatre of Caen. The project to be shown at the Lia Rumma Gallery in Naples is entitled Preparing the Flute and presents a reduced scale interior of a theatre which refers to the set design adopted in Brussels. The structure has a series of five progressive wings which mark out the perspective of the space and act as a frame for the video projected onto the end wall. At the same time other animated images, these also drawn with white lines onto a black background are projected frontally using the lateral wings as screens. The video and the drawings on display in the exhibition show landscapes and figures that allude, often in ironical fashion, to the events and characters from Mozart’s opera. In this way, the themes which are already present in other of Kentridge’s works – such as the caged lion, the metamorphosis whereby objects are transformed into animals, the broken lines that become brightly lit paths.. -

HAUSER & WIRTH Press Release On Collecting Panza Collection Archives Hauser & Wirth London, North Gallery 4 September – 15 September 2018 Opening screening: Tuesday 4 September, 6.30 – 8 pm Hauser & Wirth is proud to present, ‘On Collecting. Panza Collection Archives’. This project space and series of events explores the archives and practices of Giuseppe and Giovanna Panza, the internationally renowned collectors who, over more than five decades, built an extraordinary contemporary art collection including works by minimal and conceptual artists from both America and Europe. The presentation features archival material displayed for the first time and a series of plywood paintings by Ford Beckman. Sol LeWitt’s ‘Wall Drawing No. 150’ (1972) will be realised during the project as a performative action in the gallery space. A screening and series of public talks over the course of the exhibition expands on the topic of collecting as a concept. From the 1950s, Giuseppe Panza played a fundamental role in introducing American art movements to the museums of Europe. Dr. Panza was known for the pioneering and rigorous approach taken to all aspects of the collecting process. These fascinating archives bring to life the methods of selecting the artworks, their meticulous documentation in the space, the correspondence with the artists, the precision of his curatorial approach and the modes of display in both the domestic environment and institutional spaces. HAUSER & WIRTH The archival material has been organised in rows reminiscent of the reading room of a library to reflect that for Giuseppe Panza, art was a philosophical pursuit for truth and exhibiting art was a vehicle for communicating knowledge. -
