This database consists of 16 expert and novice evaluation terms, including five pairs with opposite polarity. In addition, a material library containing 72 samples (including 37 Chinese orchestral instruments, 11 Chinese minority instruments, and 24 Western orchestral instruments) and a 54-sample objective acoustic parameter set were developed as part of the study. The method of successive categories was applied to each term for subjective assessment. A mathematical model of timbre perception features (i.e., bright or dark, raspy or mellow, sharp or vigorous, coarse or pure, and hoarse or consonant) was then developed for the first time using linear regression, support vector regression, a neural network, and random forest algorithms.

The CAMI software for Chinese musical instruments was developed and administered to 228 students in a vocational high school. A pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design with three classes designated as the experimental group for the “CAMI in LCMI,” and another three classes as the control group for the “traditional narrative teaching approach.” Collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics analysis, ANCOVA, and structural equation modeling (SEM) by SPSS 10.0 for Windows and LISREL 8.52. The results indicate that (1) the CAMI approach is superior to the traditional narrative teaching approach, (2) students show a positive perspective on the use of CAMI for instruction in the LCMI course, (3) software interface and content design have positive and direct influence on students’ learning attitude and self-awareness learning results, (4) learning attitude has a positive and direct influence on self-awareness learning results, and (5) the CAMI in Chinese musical instruments software is satisfactory assistive material for teachers in the LCMI course.

  • Norway China World Music Concert Tour
Proposal for A Sino-European Musical Cultural Exchange Programme Liu Nian Arts Studio Beijing, China Introduction The cultural exchange between countries of the European Union and P.R of China is becoming an increasingly important dimension in Sino European relations. However the people of Europe and China still have rudimentary knowledge about each other’s cultures. One of the most important aspects of culture is music. Europe was the cradle of the birth of classical music, symphony orchestras and many of the great world composers are from the EU member states. Many of these are well known to the Chinese public. European folk and more contemporary world music however is not as well known to the Chinese public and the people of Europe have a very rudimentary idea of traditional Chinese Music. European folk music is usually thought of as the music of traditional peasant societies, rooted in work and in fixed customs. It is rural music; taught, without being written down, from one generation to the next. However, folk music is affected by, and interwoven with, art music and popular music, of which the different genres are often hard to distinguish. There are numerous times that folk music is sung and played. Folk music is sung as lullabies, and while cooking or weaving. It is played while dancing. Folk music is sung while working by sailors, lumberjacks, shepherds, and farmers. As folk music was not traditionally spread through written notation, many songs have been lost. However, an incredible amount of folk music does exist in written form and folk music archives exist.

The thesis may not be reproduced elsewhere without the permission of the Author. THE ERHU AND ITS ROLE AS A VEHICLE FOR SYNCRETIC MUSIC PERFORMANCE IN SINGAPORE A thesis subm itted in fulfil lment of the requirements fo r the degree of Master of Philosophy in Music at Wellington Conservatorium of M usic Massey University, Wellington. New Zealand L-=ok Lay Hong May 2004 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the erhu, a bowed lute from China and its development as a vehicle for syncretic music-making in Singapore. Chapter One considers the erhu 's status in Chinese culture and focuses on the differences between how the erhu was perceived by the "proletariat" of the early twentieth century contrasted with the imperialists of that time. A central assumption in this study is that erhu music-making in Singapore is inextricably bound with the traditions of both Western and Chinese culture. This concept is introduced in Chapter Two, with a discussion on musical syncretism. The erhu is a member of the huqin string family and is one instrument in the new ensemble idiom of the Singapore Huqin Quartet. This ensemble is the first to have huqin set up together in the manner of a Western string quartet. This ensemble has been influential on and contributes to a broad range of musical happenings in Singapore. It also represents one development of erhu as "world music".

(2019) Directed by Dr. James Douglass. 94 pp. As a Chinese-American composer who was born and reared in China, then studied and settled in the United States, Chen Yi’s success is widely recognized around the world. However, this success is not coincidental and is closely related to her fusion of the Chinese and Western cultures in her works. At the time of this writing, Chen Yi has composed more than forty chamber works, from which the author researched two with the same instrumentation—flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. By understanding Chen Yi’s life experiences and analyzing the theoretical aspects of these compositions, the author gives suggestions for ensemble, timbre, rhythm, pedaling, and performance techniques in these two chamber works by Chen Yi—Happy Rain on a Spring Night and … as like a raging fire … PROGRAMMATIC AND PERFORMANCE OBSERVATIONS FOR TWO CHAMBER WORKS BY CHEN YI by Xiaoyuan Huang Blankenship A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of The Graduate School at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts Greensboro 2019 Approved by Committee Chair APPROVAL PAGE This dissertation, written by Xiaoyuan Huang Blankenship, has been approved by the following committee of the Faculty of The Graduate School at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
