Johnson Reference Librarian Newspaper & Current Periodical Room Serial & Government Publications Division Library of Congress 2013 This survey of the contents of the 1929-1949 Editor & Publisher International Year Books consists of two parts: a page-by-page selective transcription of the material in the Year Books and a selective index to the contents (topics, names, and titles) of the Year Books. The purpose of this document is to inform researchers about the contents of the E&P Year Books in order to help them determine if the Year Books will be useful in their work. Secondly, creating this document has helped me, a reference librarian in the Newspaper & Current Periodical Room at the Library of Congress, to learn about the Year Books so that I can provide better service to researchers. The transcript was created by examining the Year Books and recording the items on each page in page number order. Advertisements for individual newspapers and specific companies involved in the mechanical aspects of newspaper operations were not recorded in the transcript of contents or added to the index. The index (beginning on page 33) attempts to provide access to E&P Year Books by topics, names, and titles of columns, comic strips, etc., which appeared on the pages of the Year Books or were mentioned in syndicate and feature service ads. The headings are followed by references to the years and page numbers on which the heading appears. The individual Year Books have detailed indexes to their contents.

    Land of 1,000 Dances Creole society in New Orleans had a love affair with dancing and delighted in attending balls. Bernard de Marigny, although more attuned to the rhythm of dice dancing their way to their destination, captured the essence of this romance in his “Reflexions sur la campagne du General Jackson en 1814 et 1815”. The scene he set took place in the year 1804 at a soirée dansante given in the “Salle rue Condé” (today a section of Chartres Street). The “Anglo-Saxons” in attendance “asserted that as Louisiana had been brought in to the United States the amusements should” be provided American style and “the ‘rill’ (reel) should replace the waltz, and the jig the cotillion.” Because of these “ridiculous pretensions” an “internal row took place” and “men were armed”! “I won't dance, how could I? I won't dance, Merci beau coup.” A Creole belle of great sensibility and refinement spoke up and addressed the “furious Americans”: “Sirs, for thirty years we were Spaniards, and the Spaniards never forced us to dance the Fandango. We wish to dance neither the reel nor the jig.” General Wilkinson “stood on a chair”, translated the lovely Creole’s request and ordered up a waltz. Hurrahs rang out, and once again did Beauty quell the Beast. Americans and Creoles alike took to the dance floor. In later years, New Orleans would once again impose its love of dancing (its own way) upon the American public. And it all started with the nation’s first cartoon super hero.     Transmedia Comics: Seriality, Sequentiality and the Shifting Economies of Franchise Licensing William Proctor, Bournemouth University, UK In historical terms, the comic book medium emerged out of the relationship between newspaper comic strips and the popular, much lambasted, pulp tradition of the 1920s, both of which introduced numerous trade characters to the popular imagination, including Tarzan, Popeye, Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. These were, however, preceded by Richard Felton Outcault’s ‘The Yellow Kid’ newspaper strips, often contentiously cited as the first comics in the US, which developed an emergent transmedia presence in the late-nineteenth century with vaudeville plays, a short film, crossover appearances with Outcault’s Buster Brown, and a spate of merchandising products, such as gum, postcards, baby clothes and household appliances. In the United Kingdom, the character Ally Sloper debuted in the pages of satirical magazine Judy in 1867 almost three decades before The Yellow Kid, and grew into ‘the first comics superstar’ (Sabin, 2003) and the first recurrent comic character -- perhaps the earliest example of what would today be described as transmedia franchising, with a flotilla of texts and associated merchandising products, including music hall and street theatre performances, village parades, advertising, film, and anthologies of previously published comic strips. Ally Sloper’s popularity was so enormous and widespread that ‘it is no exaggeration to say that his visibility in (UK) popular culture would have been comparable to that of any Hollywood blockbuster creation’ (ibid). It wasn’t until the early 1930s, however, that comic books began to serve an active role in the extension, elaboration and enlargement of imaginary worlds via emergent licensing practices.

    Internet Journal of Criminology © 2010 SPINACH, IRON and POPEYE: Ironic lessons from biochemistry and history on the importance of healthy eating, healthy scepticism and adequate citation By Dr Mike Sutton∗♣ Student: “Why does Popeye eat spinach?” Professor: “For iron.” Student: “Show me the evidence.” Abstract To inform knowledge in research methods and dissemination ethics for the natural and social sciences, this article reinforces the importance of citation to support all assertions of fact. New findings are presented for the history of biochemistry, nutrition, psychology, medicine, and the social sciences. Bio-chemistry papers and scientific news reports from the 1930’s seriously undermine a long standing truism that in the 1920s and 30s, bio-chemists, nutrition experts, public health policy makers, and E. Segar the creator of the newspaper comic strip Popeye were misled either by a decimal place error in 19th Century published research, or else by erroneous interpretation of 19th Century scientific findings, to exaggerate the iron content of spinach tenfold. Further, the failure to study original sources is evidenced in a multitude of completely erroneous publications claiming that these apocryphal errors caused Segar to choose spinach for Popeye’s super human strength. The National Cartoonists Society Connecticut Chapter will be exhibiting noteworthy cartoons from recognized artists with the opening of its show on Friday, October 14, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The group exhibition features original cartoons created for newspapers, greeting cards, licensing, children’s books, magazines and other popular media. The noted cartoonists include Chance Browne of Wilton, the family dynasty of Mort, Greg, and Brian Walker (of Wilton), Mary Anne Case, from New Canaan, Jerry Dumas, of Greenwich, Bob Englehart, from Middletown, the late Dick Hodgins of Wilton, Bill Janocha, from Stamford, Sean Kelly of Southport, Maria Scrivan of Stamford, and Rick Stromoski, from Suffield. The reception is free and open to the public. According to Ed MacEwen, Wilton Library’s volunteer art chairman, “We’re always looking for fresh ideas for our monthly art exhibitions. We’ve never had a full exhibition of cartoonists, so this is a first and we’re happy to have the opportunity to show this genre of work by such an extremely talented group.” The cartoonists who will be exhibiting are: Chance Browne (Wilton) attended The School of Visual Arts and Park College and distinguished himself as an illustrator, art director and musician before eventually going to work for his father.

Some of you are working from home and others do jobs that require you to go out into an uncertain world. There are projects you’ve been meaning to start---home repairs, exercise, take online classes, read books, listen to music and podcasts, or watch missed or favorite movies. And then there is cleaning out the basement or closet. I am unearthing loads of magic I obtained over the years, some from my teen years.
