CU Balinese Gamelan Ensemble Balinese Music and Dance with Gamelan Angklung Kencana I Made Lasmawan, director 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017 Grusin Music Hall Imig Music Building Program Suling Memargi I Made Lasmawan Gamelan Suling Bamboo Suling Memargi is a new composition of bamboo flute ensemble that was composed by I Made Lasmawan to be performed as a procession. The ensemble includes kendang, kemanak, kemong and kempur, tawa- tawa and cengceng kopyak, reyong and gong. This piece also features the violin playing alongside the melody of the suling. Pendet Penyambutan I Wayan Berata Vie Lim, Rose Fuler, Ni Ketut Marni, dancers Pendet penyambutan is a female welcome dance choreographed by Bapak I Wayan Berata of Denpasar in the mid 1960s, during Bali’s tourist season.The dancers wear colorful traditional Balinese dress, bringing canang sari with flower petals during the performance as a gesture of welcome. The gamelan has five parts, each with a different tempo and technique. Belimbing Buluh I Made Lasmawan Gamelan Angklung Genta Kencana Belimbing Buluh is a new composition angklung piece by Pak Made this summer in Bali. Belimbing Buluh means “A Sour Star Fruit” . The main part of the composition has five gong cycles. The piece has three different parts which are Kawitan–Pengawak–Pengecet. Each part has a different tempo and technique, including many type of kotekan, a an interlocking part that two configuration techniques played on- and off-beat. Baris Traditional Aaron Burris DeBosky, dancer Baris is a male warrior dance where the dancer a kris dagger during the performance. This dance demonstrates the movement of the traditional warrior who performs during temple ceremonies. The music is very loud and simple, and the movement is followed by the loud drum directing the music to give more dynamic to the dancer. Karya Wiwaha I Made Lasmawan Gamelan Angklung Genta Kencana Karya Wiwaha, a wedding ceremony, is a new composition by Pak Made that includes a vocal music called Tembang Bali. The text is in Balinese and talks about the gods and ancestors blessing the bride during the ceremony. The music has three parts; kawitan/opening, tembang/vocal and gegilak/closing. The Collegiate Chorale, a mixed voice choir, consists of 50-75 men and women, primarily comprised of undergraduate non-music majors, and performs primarily contemporary choral literature in addition to repertoire from all historical periods.
