  • Abstracts & Program Notes
ABSTRACTS & PROGRAM NOTES Admiral, Roger see Tardif, Guillaume (Hubert Léonard and The Belgian School of Violin Playing) Alexander, Justin Performance: A Confluence of Cultures in Flute and Percussion Music This flute and percussion program addresses the conference call for diversity by comprising works from three different continents. All three works are similarly contemporary in form and composition date, yet each draw from age old traditions in which the composer was enculturated or acculturated. More specifically, the program encompasses an amalgamation of the Western classical genre with the indigenous musics of Colombia, Egypt, and India. The program begins with a short selection called Pa’ Chicho, for flute and maracas. It is a recently composed work by Colombian composer Walter Menesses, in the folk music style of a pasillo. This form, particularly popular in Ecuador and Colombia in the 19th century, is still popular today, especially in Popayán, where the composer is based. Premiered in 1995, the second work is by Egyptian composer Halim El-Dahb, who passed away in 2017. Big Tooth Aspen for flute and darbucca is a three-movement work based on life, death and resurrection in each respective movement titled “Twigs,” “Droopy Flowers,” and “Hairy Seeds in the Wind.” Additionally, the flute uses many extended techniques throughout the piece, including pitch bending, multiphonics, and singing while playing. The final selection titled Devil Dance, also for flute and darbucca, is by Peyton MacDonald. This work, and many others by this American composer, is based on Hindustani themes from his extensive training in the East Indian tabla tradition. The work also features multiphonics by the flutist through simultaneous singing and playing.

Sunan Kali Jaga Sunan Kali Jaga is one of the Wali Sanga,1 and remains an important figure for Muslims in Java because of his work in spreading Islam and integrating its teachings into the Javanese tradition. Throughout his time proselytizing, he used art forms that, at the time, were both amenable to and treasured by the people of Java. Sunan Kali Jaga is thought to have been born in 1455, with the name Raden Syahid (Raden Sahid) or Raden Abdurrahman. He was the son of Aria Wilatikta, an official in Tuban,2 East Java, who was descended from Ranggalawe, an official of the Majapahit Kingdom during the time of Queen Tri Buwana Tungga Dewi and King Hayam Wuruk. Sunan Kali Jaga’s childhood coincided with the collapse of the Majapahit Kingdom recorded in the sengkalan “Sirna Ilang Kertaning Bhumi,”3 referring to the year 1400 Caka4 (1478). Seeing the desperate situation of the people of Majapahit, Raden Syahid decided to become a bandit who would rob the kingdom’s stores of crops and the rich people of Majapahit, and give his plunder to the poor. He became well known as Brandal5 Lokajaya. One day when Raden Syahid was in the forest, he accosted an old man with a cane, which he stole, thinking it was made from gold. He said that he would sell the cane and give the money to the poor. The old man was Sunan Bonang,6 and he did not approve of Raden Syahid’s actions. Sunan Bonang advised Raden Syahid that God would not accept such bad deeds; even though his intentions were good, his actions were wrong.

Pembaruan Musik Gamelan di Daerah Sunda Ditinjau dari Eksperimen Bunyi dan Perluasan Gramatika Musik Oleh Iwan Gunawan Makalah ini telah disampaikan pada acara konferensi International Gamelan Festival Amsterdam 13 – 14 June 2007, Tropentheater Based on an idea by PEMBARUAN MUSIK GAMELAN DI DAERAH SUNDA DITINJAU DARI EKSPERIMENTASI BUNYI DAN PERLUASAN GRAMATIKA MUSIK Oleh Iwan Gunawan ABSTRAK The paradigm of gamelan music as an art form of a special ethnic or society group is currently changing. Various innovations that have been done by Indonesian and non-Indonesian composers prove it. Finally the art of gamelan music seems not to be owned anymore by a certain ethnic but is rather “owned” by individual persons. Beside keeping on with the tradition, what has been already done by Indonesian and also non-Indonesian composers? How have they developed gamelan music in terms of sound experiments and extending the musical grammar? What do I think about these renewals and where is my personal position in my Sundanese culture as an artist?

  • MAHAMBARA: New Music from ISI Surakarta Introduction by Rahayu Supanggah
RECORDING MAHAMBARA: new music from ISI Surakarta Introduction by Rahayu Supanggah Mahambara is a compilation of recordings of ten compositions by lecturers from the Karawitan Department at ISI Surakarta. Mahambara reflects the musical journeys and explorations undertaken by these composers. From a variety of cultural backgrounds and interests, they have travelled far and wide across the ocean of musical life, including serving as teachers and artists. This compilation covers a range of styles and genres of compositions, including music with a religious (Islamic or Christian) nuance; music with a folk influence; music influenced by the regional traditions of Sunda, Bali, and Java; diatonic music; music based on classical karawitan developed in new ways; and experimental works resulting from “wild” musical explorations. Perhaps this collection of compositions will show the potential of karawitan as a source of new and creative musical compositions, while maintaining its connection to the situations and conditions of society today. Globalization and the creative industry–currently important issues–provide challenges and opportunities for creative artists to do more for both their own community and for the rest of the world. These recordings were intended to be a single CD. The Karawitan Department at ISI Surakarta decided to give priority Contents to compositions that have not yet been heard by a wide audience. Shalawat Rambu by Waluyo Longer compositions would have limited the opportunity for Kothekan Lesung by Sri Harta Ler-leran by Sugimin shorter works by other composers to appear, and so are not Lurojinem by Supardi included. Many longer works have already been presented, in live Buka Sembarangan by I Wayan Sadra performances, or as audio and video recordings; and have been Pak Tung Blang by Cucup Cahripin published and discussed on both national and international levels.

  • JAVANESE GAMELAN TERMINOLOGY Barry Drummond Gamelan Laras Tentrem
JAVANESE GAMELAN TERMINOLOGY Barry Drummond Gamelan Laras Tentrem Instruments of the Gamelan Gamelan Generic term for ensembles of predominantly percussion instruments of Indonesia, especially in Java and Bali. Bronze is the preferred material for the gongs and metallophones, but brass and iron are used as well. The instruments constituting a complete gamelan in present-day Central Java are: Gong Ageng The largest of the hanging gongs, approximately 80-100 cm in diameter. Gong Suwukan Sometimes called Siyem. Mid-size hanging gongs, approximately 50-60 cm in diameter. Gamelan Terminology 2 Kempul The smallest hanging gongs, approximately 30-40 cm in diameter. Kenong The largest of the horizontal gongs resting on racks. Kethuk and Kempyang Two small horizontal gongs which form a pair. The above instruments form the gong structure in gendhing (musical compositions, see below) with the gong ageng marking the largest sections, called gongan, and the kenong usually dividing these into either two or four sections called kenongan. The kempul, in forms that use them, usually divide a kenongan in half while the kethuk and kempyang mark the pulse of the structure in between stronger beats. In addition, some gamelan have two small hanging gongs (± 25 cm), engkuk and kemong, which, in certain sections and irama (tempo/density level, see below) of slendro pieces, replace the kempyang. Slenthem Sometimes called Gender Panembung since its construction is like the gender described below, i.e., keys suspended over individual tuned resonators. Saron Demung Commonly shortened to Demung. Pitched an octave above the slenthem, its keys, like the other saron, lie atop a trough resonator.

CHAPTER ONE RECOLLECTING RESONANCES: LISTENING TO AN INDONESIAN–DUTCH MUSICAL HERITAGE Bart Barendregt and Els Bogaerts A Mutual Heritage? Recent years have seen an increased involvement of music scholars not only with postcolonial theory, but more generally with the topics of mem- ory, heritage and the workings of nostalgia.1 Coinciding with such interests is a re-evaluation of historical materials of all sorts. Accounts of travellers, explorers, government officers or colonial linguists have been mined to understand the meaning of music in those colonial days; to show how the Other and his music have been presented and represented, and how such practices persist into the present. Researchers are increasingly aware of how music, and the performing arts more generally, may offer possibilities to study colonial life. Musical practices cast a light on the customs of both colonizer and the colonized, and the very fabric of everyday life in those days; matters that otherwise might be difficult to untie. Likewise, it offers a useful prism through which to study the often perverse mechanisms of control and suppression so typical of colonial society. Music’s meanings, in absence of ‘any denotative back-up’ need to be constantly established (Born and Hesmondhalgh 2000: 46) and thus may be instrumental in hiding the traces of representational violence; even more so than the literary or visual arts. Consequently, it seems a perfect tool for naturalizing such power imbalances. In respect of music’s workings within the colonial project, important insights have lately been derived from postcolonial theory, highlighting techniques and forms through which power is deployed in and through Western music, but also how such techniques and forms may, on the other hand, be 1 Especially the nineteenth and early twentieth century, the heydays of the imperial era, have proven to be a fertile ground for such postcolonial flavoured music studies.
