Draft Authorized Vocabulary for Medium of Performance Statements MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCE TERMS FOR LIBRARY OF CONGRESS MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCE THESAURUS FOR MUSIC DRAFT AUTHORIZED VOCABULARY FOR MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCE STATEMENTS IN BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORDS AS AGREED ON BY THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND THE MUSIC LIBRARY ASSOCIATION February 2013 Introduction The Library of Congress, in cooperation with the Music Library Association, is developing a new thesaurus of terms representing vocabulary for the medium of performance of musical works, Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus for Music (LCMPT). The vocabulary is intended to be used, at least initially, for two bibliographic purposes: 1) to retrieve music by its medium of performance in library catalogs, as is now done by the controlled vocabulary, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH); 2) to record the element “medium of performance” of musical works according to the cataloging standard, RDA: Resource Description and Access (RDA). The table that follows, which contains approximately 850 terms, updates the previously posted table of terms the collaborators recommend for the new medium of performance thesaurus. The table is a working document, subject to change. Background Medium of performance is now recognized as a separate and distinct bibliographic facet that should have its own vocabulary and vocabulary structure. Searches by medium should enable users to retrieve music by a particular instrument or instrumental group, voice or vocal group, or other medium of performance term or terms the searcher may specify. As presently incorporated into LCSH, medium of performance terms may occur in headings in two ways: either along with a term for genre, form, type, or style of music (as in Sonatas (Violin and piano)), or in headings that have only one or more medium terms in them (as in Violin and piano music). Eventually, Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT) will contain the authorized vocabulary of terms for genre, form, type, style, etc. of music. When such music terms are implemented in LCGFT, it is envisioned that we will cease including such terms in LCSH headings. Thus, for music, LCSH will continue in the direction begun with the LCGFT initiative, to represent exclusively what a musical resource is about, leaving what the musical content of the resource is to LCGFT, and what the medium of performance is to the new medium of performance thesaurus. Intrinsic to the development of LCMPT is that the terms will be defined and their relationships to each other will be made explicit. The thesaurus will contain many terms familiar to users of LCSH, but there will be more terms than LCSH contains, and the thesaurus will sometimes use a different term from the one LCSH uses for the same concept. Once LCMPT appears in structured form and is implemented, updating will take place at the Library of Congress according to a regular schedule and with the same cooperative participation by other libraries as is now done for LCSH and LCGFT. Our intention is to use LCMPT also as a source vocabulary for RDA’s “medium of performance” element. Currently, RDA contains only a small representative selection of all of the terms that could be used for medium of performance. It should be noted that a library or other agency’s adoption of LCMPT could proceed independently from any cataloging or communications standard the library or other agency may adopt. Questions may be sent to Geraldine Ostrove, Policy and Standards Division, Library of Congress, [email protected]. Dossier de prensa ESTRELLA MORENTE Vocalist: Estrella Morente Lead Guitarist: José Carbonell "Montoyita" Second Guitarist: José Carbonell "Monty" Palmas and Back Up Vocals: Antonio Carbonell, Ángel Gabarre, Enrique Morente Carbonell "Kiki" Percussion: Pedro Gabarre "Popo" Song MADRID TEATROS DEL CANAL – SALA ROJA THURSDAY, JUNE 9TH AT 20:30 MORENTE EN CONCIERTO After her recent appearance at the Palau de la Música in Barcelona following the death of Enrique Morente, Estrella is reappearing in Madrid with a concert that is even more laden with sensitivity if that is possible. She knows she is the worthy heir to her father’s art so now it is no longer Estrella Morente in concert but Morente in Concert. Her voice, difficult to classify, has the gift of deifying any musical register she proposes. Although strongly influenced by her father’s art, Estrella likes to include her own things: fados, coplas, sevillanas, blues, jazz… ESTRELLA can’t be described described with words. Looking at her, listening to her and feeling her is the only way to experience her art in an intimate way. Her voice vibrates between the ethereal and the earthly like a presence that mutates between reality and the beyond. All those who have the chance to spend a while in her company will never forget it for they know they have been part of an inexplicable phenomenon. Tonight she offers us the best of her art. From the subtle simplicity of the festive songs of her childhood to the depths of a yearned-for love. The full panorama of feelings, the entire range of sensations and colours – all the experiences of the woman of today, as well as the woman of long ago, are found in Estrella’s voice.

  • Two Common Errors About the Proportions of the ‛Ūd
ICONEA 2011 On the other hand, the‛ūd as we know it in its current form since the eleventh century, due to various, principally ideological considerations, has been the catalyst of most of the organological er- rors and arbitrary postulations3. In the present paper, we shall explore mainly two obvious errors about the instrument. The first one being Farmer’s description of a-ţ-ŢaĦĦān’s TWO COMMON ERRORS 'archlute', of great importance because it reveals the ABOUT careless attitude of Orientalist musicology towards scientific truth. The second is Poché’s so-called THE PROPORTIONS hemispherical body of al-Kindī’s‛ūd. Both errors are extremely misleading especially because of their OF THE ‛ŪD: wide repute in the literature4. Ibn a-ţ-ŢaĦĦān Ibn a-ţ-ŢaĦĦān’s’5 archlute according to Farmer 1 and al-Kindī In 1939, Henry George Farmer’6 described an archlute which would have been 180 cm tall. It would have been designed by Abū-l-Ģassan ibn a-ţ- Amine Beyhom ŢaĦĦān, a musician from Fatimid Egypt. In 1979, Curtis Bouterse7 corrected Farmer’s assumption on Introduction the basis of logic. However, the misinterpretation per- 'lutes' in archaeomusicology. This leads to persistent sisted for forty years during which musicologists misunderstandings about the origins of both were amazed at the size of this instrument, without instruments. They are, as far as we know, distinct disputing Farmer’s description. In the first part of in their origins as well as in their organology.
