A local stock exchange would bring some of these investments home and would enable insurance com panies and others to invest in Namibian companies. Enterprising banks would be able to offer their customers a managed unit trust, which they would invest in a selection of shares and other deposits. This would spread the risk of in vesting in only one or two companies, but the basic risk still remains of standing a chance of losing some or all one's investment. Existing share investors who have money on the Johannesburg Exchange would be able to bring some or all of their savings home. The main problem for pri vate investors in a small mar ket like Namibia will be how quickly they can get their money. It could take weeks or even longer to find a buyer for the shares they want to sell, depending on what price they are asking. Much bigger mar kets also suffer problems, such as in Johannesburg where nearly all the most profitable shares are bought and sold mainly by five or six big finns, or in where most of the poeple who buy shares do not want to sell them, making it hard for future investors to get any. At present, people do buy and sell shares in some compa nies, such as The Commercial Bank of Namibia and Bank Windhoek, but they can only do this by arrangement with the company secretary. Creat ing an exchange or ma.rlret place can only improve the system, making it quicker to get money as at present a buyer or seller may wait up to a year to find a suitable seller or buyer. • To be continued next week Matter of fact In our article last Friday we said the stock exchange idea had been developed by Wikus Hanekom of George Huysa mer and Partners.
