DOWNY DUCKLING DAYS AT WWT SLIMBRIDGE 23 - 31 MAY

Volume 12 Issue 5 May 2015

What do you do in your spare time?

Famous quotes from people you might or might not know Nancy Kerrigan , American former figure skater My hobbies are painting, crafts, and I like golfing

Betsy Byars , American author of children’s books My own hobbies are rather quiet. I like to read and do needlework, and I love animals

Confucius , Chinese teacher, editor, philosopher It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.

C. S. Lewis , Novelist, poet, academic You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.

Have you heard of these people? Some perhaps. To be honest I had not heard of all of them until I was researching famous people who had talked about their hobbies and ways to relax. By giving you these quotes I am hoping that this will set your mind thinking about how you relax.

It is always interesting to discover something about a person, to see them in a different light, to be enthused by their activities and to learn something from them. Over the past two months the 5Alive magazine has been carrying an advertisement about a forthcoming Art / Craft and Hobbies event. If you still have the April copy you can find it again or you can go on the ‘Falfield Village’ website to look at back issues and the promise of date to be announced.

Over the past months people have phoned me to say that they have a craft or a hobby they would like to display, this has enabled us to go ahead with the plan and now a date has been set for Saturday 4th July 2015. at Falfield Village Hall, 10am to 3.30pm.

You will be able to see the full details in another part of this publication, please look out for it.

The offer stands for people display their hobby or have a table to sell some of their craft work. Please contact Jane Hathway on 261264 or [email protected] with details of your art/ craft.

Business and Voluntary Organisations lunch

In March Thornbury Volunteer Centre hosted its second Business and Voluntary Organisa- tions lunch. The aim was to allow the business and voluntary & community sectors to meet in an informal way to discover how they could share expertise and knowledge. Forty representatives from the two sectors came together to enjoy lunch whilst interacting with other organisations.

Guest speakers were from Essilor Ltd, Europa Group Ltd, and Great Western Air Ambulance Charity. Essi- lor Ltd and Europa Group Ltd both actively encourage their employees to undertake voluntary work in their local community, having found that volunteering makes a positive impact on their employees whilst devel- oping new skills and meeting new people. All spoke passionately about the need for all sectors to work to- gether to strengthen communities and increase community capacity.

Kim Webb, Development Co-ordinator for Thornbury Volunteer Centre, said, “After the positive feedback we received from last year’s lunch we were keen to provide another event at which the two sectors could once again come together in a positive way. There is obviously willingness between the two sectors to work together and it appeared that many new links were being forged and support offered. We would like to thank Essilor Ltd for their support in the sponsorship of this event.”

Roy Greenhalgh 1941 - 2015

Roy’s life ended on 21 st March after a long fight against cancer and we offer our condolences to his wife, Ann, and daughter, Fiona.

I first met Roy and Ann when I undertook some work at Townwell House in 1985 and our friendship began.

Roy loved to walk and joined in with the benefice walks, taking his turn to lead them. One memorable walk was alongside the Sapperton canal and tunnel end- ing with a wonderful cream tea at the pub.

Roy was a great organiser and along with Carol Mardon was one of the driving forces in starting the Village Shop, which has been a model for community shops over the coun- try. During his time as Church Warden, Roy oversaw the renovation of the church windows.

Roy and Ann’s inspiration resulted in the setting up of the village charity ClinC years ago. They have been involved in various projects in Zambia including the setting up of chicken farms, com- puter training and setting up a computer room for Chalimbana School. His vision for Africa was improved education for all and he has seen the difference it can make to children in the com- pounds around Lusaka. ClinC has provided a new school in Chapata and funding for teachers and equipment in Chazanga and Ngombi. Roy has also held classes for adults in Zambia in computing and management.

Roy spent many hours over his last years studying for a PhD; I am glad that he achieved this ambition.

It is a great sadness that Roy is no longer with us but it was a privilege to have shared time and worked on various projects with him.
