Historic Maps in South Gloucestershire HISTORIC MAPS IN SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE Please note the catalogue was compiled in the 1970s, so that while the map details and locations should be correct other information such as opening times of record offices should be checked. Helen Howes is to be thanked for retyping the list. David Evans, Monday, 08 August 2005 Explanatory Notes Each entry shows the following information in the format below: DATE TYPE OF MAP1 SURVEYOR Scale2 Size3 Location4 & Reference “Title” and other details5 Notes 1. Maps are divided into the following categories: Building, Enclosure, Estate, Exchange, Glebe, Sale, Tithe and Other. 2. The scale is measured from the map and converted to inches per mile. 3. The size is given in inches, vertical height first. 4. Location: BRO Bristol Record Office GRO Gloucestershire Record Office SRO Somerset Record Office WRO Wiltshire Record Office 5. The tithe of the map is given in quotation marks. Further information may follow. Details such as acreages are in square brackets. All the maps in he Record Offices are normally available for inspection by the public, although it is usually necessary to make an appointment. They are open at the following times (telephone numbers in beackets): Mon-Fri Sat Bristol 8.45-16.45 9.00-12.00 (Wed & Fri (1s & 2nd Sat in 16.15) Month) Gloucestershire 9.00-13.00 14.00-17.00 (Thurs 20.00) Somserset 9.00-16.50 9.15-12.15 (Fri 16.20) Wiltshire 9.00-17.00 (Wed 20.30) ALL MEASUREMENTS ARE IN INCHES INTRODUCTION The County of Avon, formed in 1974, was made up from parts of north Somerset, south Gloucestershire as well as the old county Boroughs of Bristol and Bath. As a result the historic records for the county, including maps, are split between at least four main record Offices, in addition to a number of other sources. The format of entries in this catalogue with the main locations is explained on the inside front cover. This list was originally complied as a part of the preliminary research for Avon Sites and Monument Record. The coverage is by no means complete, particularly for urban areas, and we would welcome additional information. Many other similar catalogues already exist and the form of entry broadly follows their format1. This catalogue only extends to about 1900 and does not include printed maps which have already been listed by Chubb2. Most enclosure ma-ps are noted, although fuller details have been complied by Tate3. One of the most valuable series of maps for local historians and archaeologists is the Tithe Maps made in the years following the Tithe Commutation Act of 1838. Most areas have a tithe award map and they are usually fairly accurate and quite detailed. The field names in the awards have all been searched for potential archaeological sites for the Sites and Monuments Record. Another interesting facet of the tithe maps are the old parish and tithing boundaries shown: these relate to quite old divisions of land. An attempt has been made to reproduce these boundaries on maps in this booklet. Although some of the smaller detached portions have had to be omitted. A major part of this catalogue was compiled by Ed Dennison. It was finished and edited by Rob Iles and Kim Jones, who typed it. Both Ed Dennison and Kim Jones worked for Avon County Community and Enrivonment Scheme (ACCESS). Grateful acknowledgement is made to the staff of all the Record Offices and the other depositeries for their help. Layout by Mitch Tweedie. Notes 1. eg. • Field Trip Report the Tortworth Inlier Sunday 26Th April 2015. Dave
Field Trip Report The Tortworth Inlier Sunday 26th April 2015. Dave Green, our group leader, showed us some of the fascinating geology, to the north-east of the city of Bristol. This area is relatively flat but has some undulating topography as it runs into the Vale of Berkeley. It includes the northern part of the once busy Bristol Coalfield. This part of South Gloucestershire is largely rural, dotted with farms, small villages and little townships. It is enclosed by the Mendip Hills to the south, the Cotswold Escarpment to the north and to the east, and the Severn estuary to the west. The area is drained by small streams and rivers like the Frome, whose waters skirt the contours and tumble into the Severn Estuary. Palaeozoic rocks can be found exposed here, while to the east and north east younger Mesozoic rocks overlie them. The geology of South Gloucestershire at first blush appears complex and takes a little unravelling. To begin with; some terminology An inlier is an island of older rock strata, surrounded by younger strata. The Tortworth Inlier comprises Cambrian/Silurian outcrops surrounded by Mesozoic rocks located around Charfield Green, just south of the Little Avon river. It also lies North East of the Carboniferous Coalpit Heath syncline once mined for the bituminous coals it contains. The rock strata we hoped to see Cambrian rocks The oldest strata are the Micklewood beds of upper Cambrian/Lower Ordivician and Tremadoc in age. These are grey micaceous shales with flaggy sandstone or siltstones inbetween. They lie in the southern third of the Tortworth inlier.
