Inspiring change for Important Invertebrate Areas in the UK Invertebrate Survey of the A30 and A38 road verges in Area 1 (Cornwall and Devon) 11th September 2014 Susan Thompson - Grants & Trusts Officer Steven Falk Mark Tunmore Saving the small things that run the planet October 2015 1 Executive summary Between late May and late August 2015, Buglife Services carried out an invertebrate survey of the A30 and A38 in Devon and Cornwall. 41 visits to 23 sample points were undertaken on the A30 and 25 visits to 18 sampling points were undertaken on the A38, and a range of invertebrate groups were targeted. 866 taxa were recorded, the list being dominated by flies (361), beetles (177), butterflies & moths (109), bugs (82), bees, ants & aculeate wasps (53), spiders & harvestmen (50), grasshoppers & crickets (11) and dragonflies & damselflies (11). Pitfall trapping (not permitted) would have extended the beetle and bug lists greatly. The list included a number of rare and scarce species (notably the tachinid fly Policheta unicolor and lygaeid bug Trapezonotus ullrichi) and seemingly the first SW England record for the Southern oak bush-cricket (Meconema meridionalis) which is a recent British colonist. The list reveals the tremendous variety of life cycle strategies and other ecological relationships associated with road verge invertebrates. Pollinators are very well represented within the species list. The list and sample sizes reveal the strong influence of surrounding habitat, geographic location, altitude and underlying geology/ground conditions. There is a discernible ‘Bodmin Moor effect’ (decreased abundance and diversity of thermophilic invertebrates with altitude) and a strong ‘Dartmoor effect’ (increased abundance and diversity of thermophilic invertebrates on the A38 east of Dartmoor). -

A proposal which will actually get people to switch from cars to trams, as I say in the submission, a switch that has never been demonstrated by buses, we are not against buses, we want buses, we want trams to be the backbone feed and linked to a comprehensive network of bus routes. I have also attached a chart showing the rise in passages numbers of the Manchester tram Metrolink, which has increased the numbers traveling by tram almost every year and now stands at 44.3 million journeys in the 2019/20 financial year. Also a short video of trams in the historic centre of Seville. A more technical document on the 'Technical, sociological and economic reasons why trams are an essential backbone to a bus based transport system’. Today, it lies at the centre of a regional trunk road system that stretches as far as the A303 in the south and the M4 to the north. In December 2017, the Town Council, with support from local Wiltshire councillors and non- councillor committee members, devised the following outcome; To rebalance the use of roads to promote the health and well-being of residents and visitors and economic viability of the town. The Bedeman/Jennison Review found that the majority of the traffic is through-traffic, not local, with some three out of five vehicles that cross the bridge originating from outside the town. This is highly significant, and requires a total re-think of the approach to tackling these traffic problems The health, social and economic cost this traffic brings in its wake is unsustainable. This includes include congestion, air and noise pollution, intimidation of pedestrians and cyclists, and over- parking. This is not conducive to the wellbeing of our residents, young and old, nor to leisure, business and tourism. Any attempt to reduce congestion and improve the flow of traffic through and around the town should include deterrents to through traffic. -

The farm house and outbuildings are set within 17 acres with a stream running through and depending on the time of year there are sheep, cattle, pigs & chickens. They offer a relaxing, comfortable and tranquil holiday within easy reach of the Royal Forest of Dean, Wye Valley and Vale of Leadon. The surrounding area offers walking, cycling, riding, climbing, canoeing, fishing, quad biking etc, Symonds Yat, Tintern, Monmouth, Clearwell castle, Welsh mountains, Newent, Ross- on-Wye and many other pretty villages and for younger children, Clearwell Caves, Dean Forest Railway, Model Village, Butterfly Zoo and plenty of nature trails etc. -

Cycling offers a great opportunity to discover new places and views in South Gloucestershire.We hope that you enjoy cycling these routes and that it encourages you to get your bike out more often. The routes vary in length and difficulty. A grading system has been used to determine the ability level required to cycle these routes. However this is only a guide. Ability Levels 1 For all users including inexperienced or beginner cyclists. Any hills will be very gentle and any on road cycling will be on quiet roads. 2 For slightly more experienced cyclists or those who may feel a bit more confident. There may be the occasional steep hill (don’t be afraid to get off and push!) and occasional short stretches on busier roads. 3 For the reasonably competent cyclists. The distances given do not take into account any return journey unless the route is circular. The times given to cycle a route may vary depending on fitness level and the number of breaks and stops.
