    News for December 2013 5th December 2013 Christmas Lunch at the Old Royal Ship. Message from Bill Balchin. Well done all you heroes who rode to, and especially from, Luckington. I hope you got home before dark. Yes, I bottled out and drove - but I don't mind once a year when I have eaten a Christmas lunch (excellent as usual I thought). Many thanks to Pete and Malcolm, not just for today but all year. Ride report from Pete Campbell: We left Mangotsfield station at 10:15 with Rob Searle leading the way to Luckington. His appointment as ride leader today was clearly a popular decision, as twenty-two people made their way to the old station for the ride. Two minutes into the ride Lara rolled over a sharp object (not sure what, but I guess that doesn't really matter, only that her tyre needed fixing). Mike volunteered to assist and the pair made their own way to lunch. So a smaller but still large enough group of twenty followed Rob down the new cycle path across the railway into Westerleigh, up Wapley Hill, through Dodington and across the A46 near Old Sodbury. A loop through Badminton village gave us the opportunity to view some seriously high-quality Cotswold stone for a few seconds. But we were not out for the view - a Christmas meal was waiting. A short detour round Alderton and we'd done 28 kilometers before lunch. We had seventy two people there this year for the very acceptable menu of soup, turkey with many trimmings and Christmas pudding.

Officer response The Technical Document Consultation closed on 7th January. The 4 West of England Councils are currently reviewing the comments made and these, along with the Key Issues raised, will be passed to the Inspectors. The West of England Councils currently expect the oral hearing to commence from mid-May. A further update will be provided once we have received feedback from the Inspectors. Flooding 2. Our area floods during heavy rainfall, who will be liable if existing residents’ properties flood as a result of the proposed works. Officer response Development should be made safe for its lifetime without increasingly flood risk. Through the master planning process opportunities will be progressed to reduce the causes and impacts of flooding where appropriate through for example the use of natural flood management techniques. Developers will need to undertake site specific flood risk assessments as part of the planning application process. Transport improvements 3. How will the metro bus travel down the A38? Will there be guided rails or a separate bus lane? Is it just a rebranded bus? How will the service be guaranteed, will it be 24/7? Officer response It is envisaged that the MetroBus would work in a similar way to the existing MetroBus routes with services secured through a quality partnership scheme. It is intended to be a high quality, frequent, commercially run bus service. Bus priority will be provided where congestion is worst, rather than it being a fully segregated route.

It is such an amazing experience isn’t it? The seats recline; you can see over the head of the people in front because of the gradient of the floor; there’s a prepared place for the drink; the choice of film is amazing. The only thing is that the sound levels are ear shattering…but then that is my age! You sit back and enjoy…you’ll have realised by now that I no longer head for the back row clutching popcorn in one hand and the boyfriend’s hand in the other! As the film rolls on before you – you enter into the action at whatever level you wish. You can take it as being just good entertainment in which you immerse yourself, a way of passing the time and when you leave the cinema the acting stays behind. You may of course continue to chat with others about the photography, the acting abil- ity, but to all intents and purposes the event has passed – good entertainment. You can of course dip in and out of the action – something sets you thinking and for a time the film rolls on without you! Sometimes we use the film to lose ourselves for just a short time. However we watch the film passing in front of us, we enjoy the time and then return to our daily lives. That has similarities for people in church.

Introduction 1.1 This documentary research report was commissioned by Cotswold Archaeology in August 2010, and concerns a 26-hectare site at Park Farm, Thornbury, in South Gloucestershire (central grid ref ST 6368 9146). This consists of five pasture fields and has been proposed as the site of a housing development; it is immediately adjacent to the Thornbury Conservation Area to the south-west. The site has previously been the subject of an archaeological desk-based assessment compiled by Cotswold Archaeology in March 2010. It is likely that the interpretation of the site will be considerably enhanced by research into the documentary sources. This research report forms part of an extensive investigation of the heritage content of the site, undertaken before the determination of planning consent, which also includes an archaeological desk-based assessment, a geophysical survey, a Lidar survey and an archaeological field evaluation.
