The Detroit River International Crossing is a proposed bridge between Michigan and Canada. Governor Snyder endorsed the bridge at his first State of the State address citing the fact that Canada has agreed to pay $550 million dollars toward the construction. Gov. Snyder has worked out a deal with the federal government that will allow the $550 million to be counted as Michigan’s 20% matching funds to qualify for federal highway aid which adds up to billions of dollars. Supporters of the bridge say that it will increase business and travel revenue for the state, allowing the state to more easily balance the budget. Opponents believe that large public works projects commonly have cost overruns that are passed onto taxpayers and that the project is unnecessary since we already have a bridge connecting Michigan and Canada.
