In fact, on March 20, the Joint Legislative Budget Committee adopted the Revenue Estimating Committee's revised revenue estimates projecting that Fiscal Year 2009 general fund revenue fell $301 million, or 5.9 percent, short of expectations, and for Fiscal Year 2010, the projected shortfall will be $402.7 million, or 7.9 percent. To that end, I have been working with the Mississippi Legislature to make the best possible budget decisions from a string of ugly options. My administration will continue to examine the intent of the stimulus dollars and the impact these funds will have on all Mississippians. It is important to create jobs in a fiscally responsible manner without creating unfunded mandates and new government programs. I ask that you release guidance regarding the uses of the Fiscal Stabilization Fund as soon as possible, as the Mississippi Legislature has already extended its 2009 Regular Session. Haley Barbour named chair of National Assessment Governing Board WASHINGTON – U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has appointed a former governor, engineering curriculum specialist, and twelfth-grade U.S. government and politics teacher to four-year terms on the National Assessment Governing Board, which oversees the only continuing, nationally representative evaluation of U.S. students’ knowledge. Secretary DeVos named former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, one of the new appointees, as chair of the Board. Each cycle political campaigns g more expensive, more sophisticated, and begin earlier. Though two of these trends will probably hold d the 2012 election, the Republican Presidential field is taking longer to coalesce than in previous cycles. During the 2008 race, virtually every serious candidate on both the Republican and Democratic sides ha officially entered the race by April of 2007. In fact, the 2008 candidate who entered the race on the mos relaxed time table (Fred Thompson) hardly produced a campaign which one would expect his fellow Republicans to emulate. Nevertheless, potentially top tier candidates like Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, and Mitch Daniels seem legitimately ambivalent about taking the presidential plunge.

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: There are always going to be bumps on the road to recovery. BOB SCHIEFFER: He got that right. Unemployment ticked up again. Food and gas prices are high. The housing market sunk even lower and the stock market tumbled. Democrats are trying to explain. REPRESENTATIVE NANCY PELOSI (D-California/House Democratic Leader): Well, I think we have to take a careful look at those figures. BOB SCHIEFFER: Republicans said it was all the fault of the President. MITT ROMNEY: When he took office, the economy was in recession and he made it worse. BOB SCHIEFFER: In a busy week on the campaign trail, Romney made it official he’s in as Sarah Palin took a vacation, went on the ultimate ego trip or launched her own campaign. No one seemed quite sure which. What did seem clear at least according to the polls is that Republicans aren’t all that enamored with any of their candidates, which prompted Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour to say this.
