H-France Review Volume 18 (2018) Page 1
H-France Review Volume 18 (2018) Page 1 H-France Review Vol. 18 (March 2018), No. 49 Sarah Shurts, Resentment and the Right: French Intellectual Identity Reimagined, 1898-2000. Newark/Lanham: University of Delaware Press/Rowman & Littlefield, 2017. xii + 337 pp. Notes, bibliography, and index. $110.00 U.S. (hardcover). ISBN 978-1-61149-634-5. Review by Sean Kennedy, University of New Brunswick at Fredericton. Presenting the history of French intellectuals in the modern era as a struggle between left and right is a long-established tradition, but in Resentment and the Right Sarah Shurts offers a fresh and compelling perspective. By identifying a recurring cycle of contestation over identity that ties in with long-standing debates over how to categorize the far right, the significance of the left-right dichotomy, and the character of French intellectual life, Shurts highlights the persistence of a distinctive pattern of extreme-right intellectual engagement. Ambitious in scope yet also featuring close analyses of prominent and less-prominent thinkers, her book is likely to spark further debate, and deserves considerable admiration. Well aware that she is on highly contested ground, Shurts carefully delineates her definitions of the terms ‘extreme right’ and ‘intellectual.’ With respect to the former she notes a veritable “wild west of terminology” (p. 15), the legacy of a long debate over the significance of fascism in France and the difficulties inherent in categorizing a diverse, often fractious political tradition. As for intellectuals, definitions tend to focus either upon values or sociological characteristics. Faced with various interpretive possibilities Shurts seeks to, borrowing a phrase from historian John Sweets, “hold that pendulum,” avoiding interpretive extremes.[1] In dealing with the extreme right, she concedes the findings of scholars who stress its diversity, the porosity of the left-right dichotomy as suggested by “crossover” figures, and the patterns of sociability shared by left and right-wing intellectuals. -

'Le Chant Des Partisans' (Song of the Partisans), Sung by Anna Marly, Was One of the Most Important and Frequently Performed
http://holocaustmusic.ort.org/resistance-and-exile/french-resistance/le-chant-des-partisans/ ‘Le Chant des partisans’ (Song of the partisans), sung by Anna Marly, was one of the most important and frequently performed songs in the French Resistance. It became a symbol of France’s stand against the Nazis, and also played a functional role in several resistance movements in France and abroad. Born in Russia during the October Revolution of 1917, Marly escaped with her mother shortly after her first birthday. She led a remarkably varied life, including living in Menton, working as a ballet dancer in Monte Carlo and studying with Prokofiev, before moving in 1934 to Paris where she worked in the cabarets. After the fall of France in 1940, Marly fled to London, where she made contact with the Free French forces. Emmanuel d’Astier, a prominent Resistance leader, heard Marly singing an old Russian air and had the idea of adding resistance lyrics. While taking refuge in d’Astier’s house, journalist Joseph Kessel and his nephew Maurice Druon carried out this task and the song was first broadcast on Radio-Londres, the French Resistance radio station broadcast from London, in 1943. Its popularity soared from here: the radio presenter André Gillois liked the song so much that he made it the theme tune for the BBC. In France, since the national anthem ‘La Marseillaise’ (The song of Marseille) was banned by the Nazis, ‘Le Chant des partisans’ was used instead as the official ersatz national anthem by the Free French Forces, and after the war it became a temporary national anthem for France. -

O Dandismo Feminino Nas Obras De Romaine Brooks
UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DO RIO GRANDE DO SUL INSTITUTO DE ARTES DEPARTAMENTO DE ARTES VISUAIS BACHARELADO EM HISTÓRIA DA ARTE Gabriela Traple Wieczorek O DANDISMO FEMININO NAS OBRAS DE ROMAINE BROOKS Porto Alegre 2018 Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso, apresentado como requisito parcial para a obtenção do título de Bacharel em História da Arte, pelo Instituto de Artes da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Banca examinadora: Profa. Dra. Daniela Pinheiro Machado Kern (UFRGS - orientadora) Prof. Dr. Eduardo Ferreira Veras (UFRGS) Profa. Dra. -
ART DECO and BRAZILIAN MODERNISM a Dissertation
SLEEK WORDS: ART DECO AND BRAZILIAN MODERNISM A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy in Spanish By Patricia A. Soler, M.S. Washington, DC January 23, 2014 Copyright by Patricia A. Soler All rights reserved ii SLEEK WORDS: ART DECO AND BRAZILIAN MODERNISM Patricia A. Soler, M.S. Thesis advisor: Gwen Kirkpatrick, Ph.D. ABSTRACT I explore Art Deco in the Brazilian Modernist movement during the 1920s. Art Deco is a decorative arts style that rose to global prominence during this decade and its proponents adopted and adapted the style in order to nationalize it; in the case of Brazil, the style became nationalized primarily by means of the application of indigenous motifs. The Brazilian Modernists created their own manifestations of the style, particularly in illustration and graphic design. I make this analysis by utilizing primary source materials to demonstrate the style’s prominence in Brazilian Modernism and by exploring the handcrafted and mechanical techniques used to produce the movement’s printed texts. I explore the origins of the Art Deco style and the decorative arts field and determine the sources for the style, specifically avant-garde, primitivist, and erotic sources, to demonstrate the style’s elasticity. Its elasticity allowed it to be nationalized on a global scale during the 1920s; by the 1930s, however, many fascist-leaning forces co- opted the style for their own projects. I examine the architectural field in the Brazil during the 1920s.
