PREFACE HE writings of the Transcendentalists of New England have been from youth of especial interest to me. An investi- gation of the phenomena of New-England Transcendentalism was instigated by a reading of the chapter on 'l‘ranscendentalism in Professor Barrett Wendell’s Literary History of America. The idea of making a specialty of the French influence in its relation to New-England Transcendentalism as a subject for a doctorate thesis was intimated to me by Professor LeB. R. Briggs, Dean of the Harvard University faculty. Thanks for assistance in the course of actually drawing up the dissertation are due— first, to Dr. Albert Lefevre, professor of philosophy at the University of Virginia, for valuable suggestions concerning the definition of Transcendentalism ; next, to Dr. It. H. Wilson and adjunct-professor Dr. E. P. Dargan, of the depart— ment of Romance Languages at the University of Virginia, for kind help in the work of revision and correction, and, finally, to Dr. Charles W. Kent, professor at the head of the department of English at the University of Virginia, for general supervision of - my work on the thesis. In the work of compiling and writing the thesis I have been _ swayed by two motives: first, the purpose to gather by careful research and investigation certain definite facts concerning the French philosophers and the Transcendental movement in New England; and, secondly, the desire to set forth the information amassed in a cursory and readable style. -

Tracing the efforts of natural philosophers and political theorists, this dissertation explores competing frameworks at the intersection between the natural and human sciences – Social Darwinism at one pole and Socialist Darwinism at the other, the latter best articulated by Peter Alexeyevich Kropotkin’s Darwinian theory of mutual aid. These frameworks were conceptualized within different scientific cultures during a contentious period both in the life sciences as well as the sociopolitical environments of Russia, Europe, and England. This cross- pollination of scientific and sociopolitical discourse contributed to competing frameworks of knowledge construction in both the natural and human sciences. -

It became a symbol of France’s stand against the Nazis, and also played a functional role in several resistance movements in France and abroad. Born in Russia during the October Revolution of 1917, Marly escaped with her mother shortly after her first birthday. She led a remarkably varied life, including living in Menton, working as a ballet dancer in Monte Carlo and studying with Prokofiev, before moving in 1934 to Paris where she worked in the cabarets. After the fall of France in 1940, Marly fled to London, where she made contact with the Free French forces. Emmanuel d’Astier, a prominent Resistance leader, heard Marly singing an old Russian air and had the idea of adding resistance lyrics. While taking refuge in d’Astier’s house, journalist Joseph Kessel and his nephew Maurice Druon carried out this task and the song was first broadcast on Radio-Londres, the French Resistance radio station broadcast from London, in 1943. Its popularity soared from here: the radio presenter André Gillois liked the song so much that he made it the theme tune for the BBC. In France, since the national anthem ‘La Marseillaise’ (The song of Marseille) was banned by the Nazis, ‘Le Chant des partisans’ was used instead as the official ersatz national anthem by the Free French Forces, and after the war it became a temporary national anthem for France. -

Communiqué Paris, le 19 mai 2009 Prix Joseph Kessel 2009 à Erik Orsenna « Quand j’avais huit ans, je voulais être Tintin et quand j’ai eu quinze ans, Albert Londres… Il faut être libre et j’ai décidé que l’écriture serait le lieu de ma liberté. » Présidé par Olivier Weber et composé de Tahar Ben Jelloun, Jean-Marie Drot, Pierre Haski, Michèle Kahn, Gilles Lapouge, Michel Le Bris, Patrick Rambaud, Jean-Christophe Rufin et André Velter, le jury a attribué au 2ème tour de scrutin le Prix Joseph Kessel 2009 à Erik Orsenna pour son livre L’Avenir de l’eau Petit précis de mondialisation II (Editions Fayard) Après un tour du monde accroché à un fil de coton, Erik Orsenna décrit au fil de l’eau, ou de ce qu’il en restera dans vingt ans, le désastre du dérèglement climatique. De l’Australie à la Chine, du Bangladesh au Tchad, il parcourt le monde pendant deux ans et dénonce l’inaction de la communauté internationale face à cet enjeu mondial essentiel. L’Avenir de l’eau est aussi un livre écrit avec tendresse, tant le regard du romancier s’attarde sur les personnages qu’il a rencontrés. Né en 1947, Erik Orsenna est écrivain et membre de l’Académie française. Après des études d’économie, de philosophie et de sciences politiques, il devient enseignant-chercheur. Il sera conseiller au ministère de la Coopération, conseiller culturel à l’Elysée puis conseiller d’Etat. Il est membre du Haut Conseil de la Francophonie. Lauréat du Prix Roger-Nimier 1978 pour La Vie comme à Lausanne (Seuil) et du Prix Goncourt en 1988 pour L’Exposition coloniale (Seuil), il est l’auteur de nombreux ouvrages dont, parmi les plus récents, le très remarqué Voyage aux pays du coton : petit précis de mondialisation I (Fayard, 2006). -

Doctoral Dissertations. 1161. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/1161 Notions of Self and Nation in French Author-Aviators of World War II: From Myth to Ambivalence Christopher Steven Kean, PhD University of Connecticut, 2016 The traditional image of wartime aviators in French culture is an idealized, mythical notion that is inextricably linked with an equally idealized and mythical notion of nationhood. The literary works of three French author-aviators from World War II – Antoine de Saint- Exupéry, Jules Roy, and Romain Gary – reveal an image of the aviator and the writer that operates in a zone between reality and imagination. The purpose of this study is to delineate the elements that make up what I propose is a more complex and even ambivalent image of both individual and nation. Through these three works – Pilote de guerre (Flight to Arras), La Vallée heureuse (The Happy Valley), and La Promesse de l’aube (Promise at Dawn) – this dissertation proposes to uncover not only the figures of individual narratives, but also the figures of “a certain idea of France” during a critical period of that country’s history. -
