Cassaro, Professor, Department of Music ii Copyright © by Julie Ann Cleary 2019 iii Abstract “L’art n’a pas de patrie?” Music Production and Resistance in Nazi-Occupied Paris, 1940-1944 Julie Ann Cleary, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2019 Scholarship from various fields including history, Vichy studies, sociology, and musicology have dissected myths surrounding the Occupation of France (1940-1944), which fall into two generalities of total collaboration or total resistance. The reality lies in the middle, in which many individuals participated in resistance or collaboration in a variety of degrees. I argue that composing, performing, and listening to music are substantial resistant acts, using the resistance movements in Occupied Paris as a case study. This study has two overarching goals. The first is to examine music for resistance, or how music is used tactically to turn public opinion towards and to mobilize citizens for the French Résistance. The second is to study music as resistance, in which music frames the experiences of composers, performers, and audiences to understand life under oppressive regimes and imagine possibilities outside of its terror. Through music, the figures in this study maintain a sense of agency by meeting the abject horror of the Nazi agenda on their terms. Utilizing James C. Scott’s theory of public and hidden transcripts as mediated by Michel Foucault’s analysis of power/knowledge formation, this dissertation analyzes the various ways in which resistance organizations and its members employ music to subvert and resist totalitarian regimes. Chapters 1 and 2 centers on the radio as a tool of the resistance and how listening is a resistance tactic. Chapter 3 analyzes how the Front national des musiciens uses the performance and composition of music as a resistance force, as expressed in its underground newspaper iv Musicien d’aujourd’hui. Finally, Chapter 4 follows the lived experience of Elsa Barraine, a woman Jewish composer active in the resistance who understood Occupation through her engagement with her passion for music. Through this study, I produce a clearer understanding of how resistance groups during the Occupation of France utilized music as a real tactic for mobilization and resistance. Par cette réunion inaugurale, le Conseil National de la Résistance (CNR) inscrit l’ambition de la Résistance de se doter d’un programme politique et d’une feuille de route communs, sous la direction du général de Gaulle. Une semaine plus tard, le 3 juin, un gouvernement provisoire, le Comité Français de Libération Nationale (CFLN) est intronisé à Alger, suivi en novembre d’une Assemblée consultative provisoire. Dans cette dernière siègent à nouveau des parlementaires communistes, dont André Marty qui quitte alors Moscou.

The French preoccupation with the past had been developing throughout the later nineteenth century and increased with Stravinsky’s residency in France.1 Stravinsky’s particular brand of neoclassicism did not find favour, however, with a number of intellectual young composers of the 1930s, notably those associated with La Jeune France, who regarded neoclassicism as a false path for musical modernism and were scathing in their attacks upon it.

    1 La place des syndicalistes (et du syndicalisme) dans le CNR Le 12 septembre 1944, lors du rassemblement organisé par le Conseil national de la Résistance (CNR) au Palais de Chaillot, le général de Gaulle expose, au nom du GPRF qu’il préside, les fondements de la politique du gouvernement issu de la Résistance. Son discours s’ouvre par un hommage appuyé au CNR. Le CNR auquel il s’adresse est, depuis la veille, présidé par Louis Saillant, membre fondateur du CNR au titre de la CGT, dont il a été l’un des acteurs de la réunification dans la clandestinité le 17 avril 1943. Cette place et cette fonction éminemment politique d’une organisation syndicale et de l’un de ses dirigeants semblent évidentes en 1943 comme à la Libération. Cependant, elles sont inédites, jamais rééditées. Comment comprendre cette situation exceptionnelle ? Le CNR auquel le général de Gaulle rend hommage ce 12 septembre 1944, n’est pas ou n’est plus le Conseil de la Résistance originel créé sur ses instructions par Jean Moulin. D’une part, certains de ses promoteurs et acteurs – en premier lieu Jean Moulin – ont disparu sous les coups de la répression ou ne sont pas revenus des camps de concentration ; d’autres ont été appelés à l’Assemblée consultative ou au gouvernement provisoire. D’autre part, depuis sa création – à laquelle participent les deux grandes confédérations syndicales (CGT et CFTC) –, le CNR n’a cessé de faire évoluer ses missions, de se transformer, de se multiplier et de se démultiplier, au point de ressembler, dans son architecture et son fonctionnement, à une confédération.

Sounding Nostalgia In Post-World War I Paris Abstract In the years that immediately followed the Armistice of November 11, 1918, Paris was at a turning point in its history: the aftermath of the Great War overlapped with the early stages of what is commonly perceived as a decade of rejuvenation. This transitional period was marked by tension between the preservation (and reconstruction) of a certain prewar heritage and the negation of that heritage through a series of social and cultural innovations. In this dissertation, I examine the intricate role that nostalgia played across various conflicting experiences of sound and music in the cultural institutions and popular media of the city of Paris during that transition to peace, around 1919-1920. I show how artists understood nostalgia as an affective concept and how they employed it as a creative resource that served multiple personal, social, cultural, and national functions. Rather than using the term “nostalgia” as a mere diagnosis of temporal longing, I revert to the capricious definitions of the early twentieth century in order to propose a notion of nostalgia as a set of interconnected forms of longing.

Over this time, professors and composers added over 172 works to the repertoire. Students and professionals have performed many of these pieces, granting long-term popularity to a select group. However, the majority of these works are not well-known. The aim of this study is to provide students, teachers, and performers with a greater ability to access these works. This aim is supported in three ways: performances of under-recorded literature; an analysis of the instrumental techniques, forms and genres used in the corpus; and a catalogue raisonné of all extant contest works. The performative aspect of this project is contained in two compact discs of recordings, as well as a digital video of a live recital. Twenty-six works were recorded; seven are popular works in the genre, and the other nineteen are works that are previously unrecorded. The analytical aspect is in the written thesis; it uses the information obtained in the creation of the catalogue raisonné to provide an overview of the corpus in two vectors.

It became a symbol of France’s stand against the Nazis, and also played a functional role in several resistance movements in France and abroad. Born in Russia during the October Revolution of 1917, Marly escaped with her mother shortly after her first birthday. She led a remarkably varied life, including living in Menton, working as a ballet dancer in Monte Carlo and studying with Prokofiev, before moving in 1934 to Paris where she worked in the cabarets. After the fall of France in 1940, Marly fled to London, where she made contact with the Free French forces. Emmanuel d’Astier, a prominent Resistance leader, heard Marly singing an old Russian air and had the idea of adding resistance lyrics. While taking refuge in d’Astier’s house, journalist Joseph Kessel and his nephew Maurice Druon carried out this task and the song was first broadcast on Radio-Londres, the French Resistance radio station broadcast from London, in 1943. Its popularity soared from here: the radio presenter André Gillois liked the song so much that he made it the theme tune for the BBC. In France, since the national anthem ‘La Marseillaise’ (The song of Marseille) was banned by the Nazis, ‘Le Chant des partisans’ was used instead as the official ersatz national anthem by the Free French Forces, and after the war it became a temporary national anthem for France.
