August 2016
Dear colleagues and friends attending the 2016 ASHS Conference: Welcome to Atlanta and to the 113th annual meeting of the American Society for Horticultural Science. Building upon the dreams of those who gathered for the organizational and founding meeting of the ASHS in Boston, we follow the idea of gathering annually to share our science and experiences, and to build our professional networks. This year’s conference, although following a long tradition and with a strong heritage, promises to be among the best ever. The theme of this year’s conference is, “Seize the Future”. Atlanta is a beautiful city with a rich history, being founded as a railroad terminus 180 years ago, but with the new expanding energy of the sunny south. After its destruction in the Civil - eastern US. It has been 35 years since the ASHS last convened in Atlanta. The population of the Atlanta region has more than doubled since we last visited. It is a wonderful conference venue with an energy and enthusiasm emblematic of the ASHS. The Technical Program committee has developed an outstanding program surrounding the conference theme. The program includes informative and enjoyable plenary sessions ranging from the importance of maintaining ecological diversity in the future, to the future of plant genetic manipulation with gene editing; a colloquium on “Farms of the Future”; a series of grants workshops to help support future research, discovery, teaching, and technology; more than 300 oral and 400 poster presentations; more than 100 hours of working group workshops and meetings; and a trade show and exposition. The conference includes wonderful time for professional networking including an opening reception and closing dinner, social events, sev- eral luncheons, a fun run/walk, and ample time in the trade show, poster sessions and in the hallways. The tours and ancillary activities of the Conference will give participants and guests a good view of the city, its history, its beauty, and its business. It is my hope that you make the most of this conference. I am grateful for your participation and am proud of you who are presenting in oral or poster sessions, or participating in the workshops. Thank you for sharing your science, experiences, discoveries, and technologies. Take the opportunity to strengthen and expand your professional networks. Enjoy the time to renew acquaintances with colleagues and friends. This is your time to “Seize the Future” – your future. Best wishes for a productive, informative, and enjoyable conference. With kind regards, Curt R. Rom University Professor, Horticulture President, American Society for Horticultural Science
