President’s Report

The state and the Milwaukee community’s pride in the Milwaukee Art Museum continues to flourish since our opening more than two years ago. The Museum is a cornerstone of Milwaukee’s cultural life and an icon for the city itself. We continue to gain attention from around the country and the world—the Museum was named among the “New Wonders of the World” by Condé Nast Traveler magazine, and People magazine named the Milwaukee Art Museum one of three “New American Beauties,”and “the city’s instant tourist attraction.”During a recent visit to , my wife Donna and I were thrilled to see a banner of the Milwaukee Art Museum outside the Victoria and Albert Museum; our Calatrava-designed building was a featured work in the Zoomorphic architecture exhibition. We realize that our well-being as an institution is based on our continuing outreach to the community and beyond. Exhibitions and programming are varied to interest a diverse visitor base. Last year, African Sculpture: Bamana Art from Mali and Graciela Iturbide: Images of the Spirit sought and drew African-American and Latino visitors to the Museum. Last spring, we launched our first public forum program with a panel discussion of public art, reaffirming the Museum as a place for lively discussion about arts-related issues. The Museum partnered with the arts community, teaming with groups such as the Milwaukee Symphony, Ko-Thi Dance Company and Present Music to increase our reach and vary our offerings. The year ended with the Harley-Davidson 100th Anniversary, a community “happening” in which the Museum played a key role. This was the year of Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of , which drew audience and attention from around the world and raised the profile of the Milwaukee Art Museum to new heights. We have aggressively tackled our finances. Last April, an agreement was finalized to refinance $29 million of the debt using Redevelopment Revenue Bonds issued by the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Milwaukee and purchased by a consortium of financial institutions. These double tax-exempt bonds offer the Museum a favorable interest rate and provide an organized repayment plan for the remaining debt. A revolving line of credit has been secured to provide resources in the event of a cash flow shortage in the next five years. This final step secures the financing arm necessary to provide an instrument to serve the management of our debt. My thanks to Richard Glaisner, chairman of the Finance Committee, for his time and expertise in this initiative. The Museum is fortunate that Sheldon Lubar, a former President and a pillar of the Donald Baumgartner rode in on his Harley to financial community, volunteered to rejoin the board to lead the task of filling the gap take part in the weekend’s activities. between the $125 million cost of the building, the gardens and the refurbishment of the main building and the $100 million raised. In the few months since he has been engaged in this task, much progress has been made toward the objective of complete eradication of the debt as speedily as possible. I would also like to recognize longtime friends and supporters who are no longer with us—George Chester, Judy Meissner and Esther Leah Ritz—they will be missed. My thanks to David Gordon, who has successfully navigated his first year at the Museum as Director and CEO. He has re-energized the staff by setting a high standard of good humor, hard work and innovative thinking. David’s strong leadership can be seen in compelling exhibitions, improved finances, excellent operations and a higher community profile for the Museum. He has become a booster of Milwaukee and a very good friend. I want to extend thanks to each member of the Board of Trustees for your enthusiastic support and involvement and for being a part of this remarkable year.

DONALD BAUMGARTNER BOARD PRESIDENT

www.mam.org 5 Director’s Report

I took up the position of Director and CEO on October 21, 2003 some seven weeks into the fiscal year covered by this annual report. It has been an eventful time with progress to recount on every front. The first thing I would like to say is how enjoyable it has been. The board, donors, volunteers, staff and community at large have made me—and my wife Maggi—feel very welcome. The Calatrava-designed Quadracci Pavilion is a wondrous work of art that raises the spirits of all who behold it. A kinetic sculpture as well as a mere building, it is a beacon for this lovely city and for the state as a whole: the 2003 Wisconsin State Map has the Governor and Mrs. Doyle posed in front of the wings. The Museum is aware of its civic responsibilities and is eager to play whatever constructive role it can in generating economic development. That does not mean being a booster for everything: not all development is good development. Public access to the Museum has been improved. The Museum is one of the few in the to remain open seven days a week. People can now come into the Quadracci Pavilion and stroll into the store and cafe without paying admission. The Education department’s tours for school children brought in 55,000 young visitors—a record number. A total of 478,587 came to the permanent collection, to exhibitions, lectures and other events (up 2.8 percent over the previous year). This figure does not include the people who came to the 130 private events held in the Museum or visitors who just wanted to look around the new building. The Museum had twin peaks of attendance. The first was for Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of Poland in the fall of 2002. The exhibition was conceived and originated by the Museum and proved that the Milwaukee Art Museum is capable of conceiving and mounting major traveling exhibitions. The exhibition went on to the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and then to the Museum of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. It was a critical and popular success, and the catalogue made a major contribution to scholarship. The second was a quite different occasion. Visitors to the Harley-Davidson centenary David Gordon enjoys the Opening Night celebrations at the end of August 2003 came in droves to see the exhibition Rolling Celebration of Leonardo da Vinci and the Sculptures: The Art of Harley-Davidson in the Baumgartner Galleria: some 40,000 in a week Splendor of Poland. and an astonishing 13,500 on Saturday of the festive weekend. My first objective when I arrived was to make it abundantly clear that the Museum was artistically dynamic and was not resting on the laurels of its extraordinary new building. My second objective was to build an outstanding team from existing staff and from new recruits. And the third was to make the repayment of debt the Museum’s top priority— which could only be tackled once the community was convinced that the Museum was artistically ambitious and well run. The fundamentals of the Museum’s economic situation are sound. Extra revenue from admission, from members (an impressive 30,000 now), from the annual campaign, from special events and from the store has met the extra costs of operating the Calatrava extension. The audited financials (from page 50) show that on an operating basis the Museum made a surplus of $32,433 before interest and depreciation. I would like to thank the President and the Board of Trustees for their support as well as their dedication and professionalism; the armies of volunteers, docents and helpers for their engagement and passion; the support and special interest groups for their enthusiasm; the donors and lenders of works of art for their public-spiritedness; and benefactors, foundations, corporations and individuals for the generosity of their monetary or in-kind contributions; and our wonderful staff.

DAVID GORDON DIRECTOR AND CEO

Curatorial

This year was a record-breaking year for the Curatorial department, highlighted by two of the most successful exhibitions ever organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum. The blockbuster exhibition, Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of Poland, broke all previous MAM exhibition attendance records with more than 150,000 visitors. It attracted an unprecedented degree of positive publicity including outstanding national and international press. In addition to coverage in major news publications such as The New York Times and major art publications such as Art in America, the exhibition was also featured on the television program CBS Sunday Morning. After its debut here in Milwaukee, the exhibition completed a celebrated tour to The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, The California Palace of the Legion of Honor. Other feature exhibitions in the Baker/Rowland galleries included Brandt and Weston: Two Geniuses of Photography, a survey of the careers of two highly influential masters of photography, and African Sculpture: Bamana Art from Mali, which examined the cultural philosophy of the Bamana people through the art objects of this West African nation. The season concluded with Industrial Strength Design: How Brooks Stevens Shaped Your World, a major career retrospective of Brooks Stevens, one of the country’s most influential pioneers of . Included were icons like the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile and the Olympian Hiawatha train; a dazzling array of domestic products from clothes irons to refrigerators; and renderings, models and original photographs from MAM’s Brooks Stevens Design Archive. Works on paper exhibitions included a selection of Minimalist prints and drawings from MAM’s Collection, and Think Big: Print Workshop Collaborations from the Tatalovich Collection, highlighting an important local print collection. New York artist Rachel Harrison’s first museum exhibition and the first major show of photographer Graciela Iturbide’s work were highlights of the photography gallery. MAM also showcased two motorcycle exhibitions in conjunction with Harley-Davidson’s 100th Anniversary Celebration: Rolling Sculptures: The Art of Harley-Davidson in the Baumgartner Galleria and Danny Lyon’s “The Bikeriders”: Pictures and Audio from the 1960s in the Cudahy Gallery. Exhibitions in the Decorative Arts Gallery, supported by the Chipstone Foundation, included Skin Deep: Three Masters of American Inlaid Furniture,a presentation of three great practitioners of inlay and marquetry wood working techniques, and an exhibition of maps of America from the Colonial Williamsburg Collection. In the Schroeder Galleria, American artist Andrea Zittel completed the second installment of the On-Site series with A-Z Wagon Stations. Many important acquisitions entered MAM’s Collection during the year, including a silver monteith made for the Royal African Company in 1688, a 16th-century sculpture of the Virgin and Child, a Ben Shahn drawing from ca. 1943, prints by Jacques Callot and Jean-Francois Millet, videos and photographs by Candice Breitz and a sculpture by contemporary artists Jennifer and Kevin McCoy. The Registrar’s Office arranged a significant number of important loans of works from MAM’s Collection to national and international museums, in addition to managing the complex exhibition tour of the Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of Poland exhibition to Houston and San Francisco. Frank Stella’s important 1966 painting, Chocura III, was one of the works in the Collection to receive much-needed conservation treatment. In addition, the Conservation department undertook the conservation of more than 100 objects and began preparations for moving into their new lab.

26 Milwaukee Art Museum Membership

Milwaukee Art Museum members demonstrated their enthusiasm and commitment to the visual arts during the year by continuing to support operations in record-breaking numbers. MAM members reached a total of 29,973. Of the 11,000 new members who joined the Museum during the year, more than 4,000 joined during the eight-week run of Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of Poland. These numbers were achieved, in part, due to an aggressive direct mail appeal for new member support during the exhibition, which brought the Museum and its consultant partner, NPO Direct Marketing, Inc., a bronze MAXI award for outstanding membership marketing. Other signif- icant events to note for new member acquisition included the annual Lakefront Festival of Arts: nearly 300 memberships sold—a new record— and on-site sales: nearly 3,300 memberships sold. Continued partnerships with Rahr-West Art Museum and Racine Art Museum, local educa- tional institutions Concordia University and MIAD, and participation in the Workplace Giving Campaigns of UPAF/Visions, We Energies Support the Arts Campaign, GE Medical Systems Arts Campaign and the Combined Federal Campaign made up nearly 4,000 of our renewing supporters. Museum members took advantage of privi- leges and benefits throughout the Museum during the year. Visiting members made up 23 percent of the Museum’s attendance for the year, receiving free gallery and exhibition entry. In the Museum Store, 28 percent of the revenue generated was attributed to members taking advantage of their discount benefits. Museum members help to bring about a fantastic opening for feature exhibitions. Exhibition Preview Days and Opening Night Celebrations were well attended by members, averaging 1,500 per exhibition, and the Member- Only Gallery Talk Series is regularly attended by no less than 200 members per talk. More than 14,500 members continued their support and 13 percent increased the amount of their annual contribution to MAM. Members continue to take advantage of more personal services offered by MAM. More than 6,400 calls to the Membership Hotline were recorded Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of Poland for the year. www.mam.org 27 Education and Programs

Education and Programs broke all records, with more than 81,534 people touring the Museum. To meet the growing demand for tours, 34 docent trainees graduated to join MAM’s Docent Corps of 150 committed volunteers. A weekend docent program was launched and Sunday drop-in tours were added. Students also tested their teaching skills by leading tours though the galleries. Five Spanish-speaking college students gave tours of Graciela Iturbide: Images of the Spirit and 450 fifth grade students graduated from our Junior Docent Program. The year started with Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of Poland, setting a new record for tours and adult program attendance. More than 1,400 people came to celebrate Opening Night with Prince Czartoryski and the magical Syrena Dancers. More than 100,000 visitors learned more about the role of art in the through our Antenna Audio Guides. More than 1,000 visitors gathered to hear scholars from around the world discuss the history, art, music, literature, law and politics of Poland. More than 16 percent of exhibition attendance came to the Museum through education and public programs. Our programs ranged from small intimate events, such as salon style poetry readings during Brandt and Weston: Two Geniuses of Photography, to standing room-only events such as Ko-Thi Dance Company’s performance at the opening celebration of African Sculpture: Bamana Art From Mali. MAM is a place for children as well as adults. More than 13,000 children and family members took part in MAM studio programs and Family Sundays. Children of all ages explored the creative process in Handmade by Lois Ehlert: Art for Children’s Books in the Pieper Education Gallery. Tours are the most visible part of our teacher and school program. In addition to touring over 55,000 student visitors, the Museum works with students from kindergarten to college through a variety of programs. In November, the Museum galleries were turned over to 450 students and became a writing lab during the Young Authors Conference. MAM showcased the work of 350 students throughout Wisconsin in the Scholastic Art Awards-Wisconsin Regional Exhibition, Lois Ehlert met with children and their parents and 38 elementary and high schools used MAM as an ongoing resource by participating at the opening Handmade by Lois Ehlert: Art for in multiple-visit programs such as the Satellite Milwaukee High School for the Arts Children’s Books. program, SHARP, MAM/Symphony program and the Junior Docent Program. Visitors enjoy an art activity at Family Art Fest. More than 2,000 teachers participated in tours, workshops and in-service programs at the Museum. Two online resources launched for teachers and scholars added to the material available to help bridge the gap between the Museum and the classroom. The Brooks Stevens Archive is a comprehensive storehouse of information about Milwaukee’s prolific industrial designer. The photographs of Milton Rogovin were also placed online as a resource for teachers. These two projects are a promising start in our efforts to make the Museum’s Collection available to the greatest number of people. MAM’s education programs can also be found throughout the community. Studio classes take place at the Sharon Lynn Wilson Center for the Arts in Brookfield and MAM’s ArtAloud program works with children in branch libraries throughout the city. During a workshop at the Froedert and Medical College Cancer Center, cancer patients transformed their radiation masks into elaborate works of mixed-media art as an expression of their journey. The Celebration Mask Project was on display in the Education Hallway from January through March. MAM’s education programs continue to serve as a catalyst connecting people and ideas through art by offering diverse ways audiences can explore art and the creative process.

34 Milwaukee Art Museum Development

Development efforts in 2003 concentrated on strengthening the basic elements of a successful development program: the annual Contributing Membership Campaign supported by individuals, corporations and foundations; Grants and Sponsorships; Planned Gifts; and Individual Involvement. Community support increased, despite a tight economic climate, which greatly assisted the Museum in meeting the needs of our increased membership and visitorship. The generosity and vision of our donors has elevated and enriched the Museum’s artistic and cultural role locally, nationally and internationally.

Contributing Membership (Annual Campaign) A key area of support continues to be the annual Contributing Membership Campaign, which is the single largest source of funding for operations. The campaign was co-chaired by Stacy Terris and Judy Gordon. The campaign raised $3,427,000, an increase of more than 10 percent over the previous year, with 77 percent of contributions from individuals, 16 percent from corporations and 7 percent from foundations.

Grants and Sponsorships Grants, most commonly in the form of restricted gifts earmarked for specific purposes, are critical to maintaining the artistic caliber and accessibility of the Museum. Restricted gifts increased 20 percent in 2003, supporting exhibitions, library acquisitions, conservation activities, lectures and symposia and a host of programs for children and families. Unprecedented collaboration in sponsorship took place in the first and last feature exhibitions of 2003. Prime sup- port for Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of Poland came from WE Energies and Christopher Seton Abele. Further support extended beyond American borders, involving LOT Airlines, the Polish government and the Italian government, in addition to local Polish American support groups. Local, state and national organizations, foundations and govern- ment agencies also participated, including the Spirit of Milwaukee, Wisconsin Department of Tourism, Wisconsin Humanities Council, the Trust for Mutual Understanding and the Federal Council on Arts and Humanities. An out- standing group of 17 sponsors worked together to make possible Industrial Strength Design: How Brooks Stevens Shaped Your World, primarily the Stevens family and area corporations that had been clients of Brooks Stevens. Major sponsors included the Brooks Stevens family, Kahler Slater Architects, Miller Brewing Company, David and Julia Uihlein Charitable Foundation and Rockwell Automation.

Planned Gifts The roster of planned giving donors continued to increase, with the majority of new Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of Poland donors coming from within the ranks of the Museum’s membership. Initiatives included VIP opening celebration. From left to right: Prince and Princess Czartoryski, Donna and cultivation and discussion of planned giving opportunities with our membership and Donald Baumgartner and Mariusz Brymora, the public and estate planning professionals through presentations and workshops. Cultural Attaché at the Consulate General of Planned Giving donors who have chosen to participate in the Legacy Society acted as Poland in Chicago. Museum ambassadors throughout the year at Museum special events and programs. David Gordon meets with Dorothy Stadler and friends at the opening of Brandt and Weston.

www.mam.org 35 Community Involvement Board and community members have taken on new responsibilities under the leadership of Sheldon Lubar, Chairman of the Financial Development Committee, and James Schloemer, Chairman of the Development Committee of the Board. Four new task forces were created in 2003. The Annual Campaign Task Force is responsible for the Contributing Membership Campaign. The Influencers Task Force works to create new and stronger ties and increased involvement with a diverse cross-section of the community. The Major Gifts Task Force is working with our Financial Development Committee to eliminate the building debt and an aggressive timeline has been established. The Planned Giving Task Force is looking to secure long-term financial commitments through planned or deferred gifts such as bequests and charitable remainder trusts. Museum staff and board members continue their commitment to implement broad- based efforts to support MAM operations, collection growth, programs and endowment needs through restricted and unrestricted gifts. A renewed energy and enthusiasm exists for moving the Milwaukee Art Museum forward financially and artistically.

www.mam.org 49 Financial Report The financial results of the Milwaukee Art Museum, Inc. (Museum) for the years ended August 31, 2003 and 2002, and its financial position as of these dates are presented in the following financial statements. KPMG LLP, independent certified accountants, have audited these statements, and their report, included on page 51, contains no exceptions or qualifications. Fiscal year 2003 was a successful year for the Museum in many respects. Museum attendance and membership reached new highs. The success of these factors, along with strong education programming, a successful museum store and increased special events resulted in an increase in net assets of $32,433 in the operating fund of the Museum’s unrestricted net assets for the year. Total net assets decreased by $3.3 million, from $110 million to $107 million primarily due to depreciation expense of $3.4 million and interest expense of $1.5 million—both related to the expansion project completed in fiscal year end 2002. The Museum’s management and board of trustees have placed as a priority for 2004 the challenge of eliminating the debt as well as continuing to work to ensure that the financial resources necessary to carry out the Museum’s programming objectives and primary mission are available.
