The Museum is a cornerstone of Milwaukee’s cultural life and an icon for the city itself. We continue to gain attention from around the country and the world—the Museum was named among the “New Wonders of the World” by Condé Nast Traveler magazine, and People magazine named the Milwaukee Art Museum one of three “New American Beauties,”and “the city’s instant tourist attraction.”During a recent visit to London, my wife Donna and I were thrilled to see a banner of the Milwaukee Art Museum outside the Victoria and Albert Museum; our Calatrava-designed building was a featured work in the Zoomorphic architecture exhibition. Last year, African Sculpture: Bamana Art from Mali and Graciela Iturbide: Images of the Spirit sought and drew African-American and Latino visitors to the Museum. Last spring, we launched our first public forum program with a panel discussion of public art, reaffirming the Museum as a place for lively discussion about arts-related issues. The Museum partnered with the arts community, teaming with groups such as the Milwaukee Symphony, Ko-Thi Dance Company and Present Music to increase our reach and vary our offerings. The year ended with the Harley-Davidson 100th Anniversary, a community “happening” in which the Museum played a key role. This was the year of Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of Poland, which drew audience and attention
