Vidin District http://www.belogradchik.bg e-mail: [email protected] phone: +359 87 8398939 Dear colleagues, Geopark Belogradchik Rocks (Bulgaria) is pleased to announce the International Scientific Conference “20 Years Global Geoparks” dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO GEOPARKS Initiative announced in 1998 at the ProGEO Meeting in Belogradchik. The main theme of the Conference is “Geoparks and Modern Society – 20 years protection, promotion and sustainable use of Earth Heritage in park environment”. Tentative list of the conference topics: 1. Geodiversity identification, assessment and protection in geopark environment. 2. Geopark agenda – link between geological heritage and all aspect of natural and cultural heritage: interpretation, education and networking. 3. Integrated Geopark Management. 4. Geoparks towards sustainable tourism development – new approaches and trends. Presented articles will be submitted for reviewing and publishing in international thematic journals, referred in international database such as Scopus, Web of Science, Crossref. The event will be held at Belogradchik in the beginning of October, 2018. Belogradchik town is a beautiful place with remarkable geological heritage situated in NW Bulgaria. The concept of Geopark Belogradchik Rocks is based on the famous natural monument “Belogradchik rocks”, and remarkable geodiversity including sedimentary, igneous, volcanic and metamorphic rocks from Precambrian to Recent. There are dozens of caves in which artifacts of earliest settlements in Europe are preserved. The Magura Cave, which is in the tentative list of UNESCO, is known with its primitive prehistoric wall paintings and natural sparking vine. 41. Carboniferous granodiorite Location. 34 T 641581 E, 4809904 N. It is located 6.7 km south of Gorni Lom village. Category. Geosite of scientific value: outcrop of Carboniferous granodiorites. Geological setting. The outcrop is located in the Late Carboniferous St. Nikola Pluton, belonging to the Balkan granite-granodiorite complex. It is intruded between the rocks of the Chernivrah metamorphic complex and Berkovitsa low-grade metamorphic complex, parts of Berkovitsa tectonic unit. Description. The rocks of the St. Nikola Pluton crop out as prolonged in East-West direction body with width 3-3,5 km and length 16-17 km, continuing on Serbian territory. The pluton is composed of massive leucocratic to mesocratic coarse-grained rocks of granodiorite-granite composition, feldspar and quartz porphyry in places. The main rock-forming minerals are plagioclase, potassium feldspar, quartz and hornblende. Granite texture is plagioclase porphyry, and granodiorites are uneven-granular. In the rocks of the pluton is observed planar parallelism with equatorial orientation and inclination to the south from 40 to 85°. In places they show schistosity due to local tectonic events. In tectonically reworked areas granodiorites have undergone imposed metasomatic processes. Recent geochronological dating upon zircon (Carrigan et al., 2005) for St. Nikola Pluton indicate absolute age 311,9 ± 4,1 Ma, which refers to the Upper Carboniferous. Surrounding landscape. The area is surrounded by beautiful forests on the northern slopes of the highest part of the Western Balkan with peak Midzhur and outcrops of igneous and metamorphic rocks. Sensitivity and protection measures. Location of the geosite should be marked by dashboard with data about the Carboniferous magmatism and geology of the area in the center of Gorni Lom village.

Bulgarian Realists - getting to know the Bulgarians through their art Ronald G Young MA MSc 1 October 2016 1 DEDICATION To my daughters - Hilary, Jan and Susanna To enter into the subjective life of another culture – its symbolic codes, its overt beliefs and implicit assumptions – requires, as any immigrant or nomad can tell you, a considerable effort of consciousness and imagination; a kind of stretching of self towards the other- and a gradual grasp of differences which are sometimes imperceptible and subtle. ….. Cultures are neither static nor monolithic organisms – they are complex, changeable and internally diverse.
