NI6357 18 NI6357 3 行って見て御覧 わが胸にひびくなり 丸い眼をした あゝ甘し Furusato ‘Homeland’ – is a song with a deep meaning of belonging, whether this is in the いい子だよ あゝ楽し countryside or the city; ‘I can never forget my birthplace’, the song says, with the hope that あゝうれし one day there would be a possibility of returning home.

I regard Japan as my second home, having visited many times over the 27 years since 1991. ねんねこ しゃっしゃりませ 寝た子の かわいさ 風の子供が 山へ出て This is partly because of the wonderfully warm welcome I get, partly because I love the beauty 起きて 泣く子の 釣鐘草をふきました of the countryside, the culture and the history but also because the songs I sing truly touch ねんころろ つらにくさ 釣鐘草は眼をさまし my heart. ねんころろん ねんころろん ちんから ころりと 鳴り出すと ススキもキキョウもカルカヤも ねんねこ しゃっしゃりませ みんな夢からさめました This is my third CD of ‘kakyoku’ and Adrian Farmer and I have put together some familiar きょうは 二十五日さ and some unusual songs within the selection. One of the better-known songs is Koujo no あすは この子の 風の子供が 浜へ出て tsuki, the castle in the moonlight echoing with the ghosts of samurai warriors, and equally, ねんころろ 宮詣り やどかりの顔なでました the song Sakura, sakura ‘Cherry Trees’ is recognised all over the world. Less well known is ねんころろん ねんころろん やどかり びっくり 戸をしめて よんでも よんでも 出てはこず Machino hana ya ‘The Flower Seller’, an amusing song about a rather extrovert lady, or 宮へ 詣った時 さんまも 鯛も えびの子も Funa uta ‘Boat Song’, a picturesque autumn song where the piano part exactly captures the なんと言うて 拝むさ 波にかくれてゆきました falling acacia leaves drifting along the river. It is a pleasure to share a different beautiful 一生 この子の ねんころろん まめなように setting of the poem Sakura yoko cho by the poet Shuichi Kato, this time composed by Sadao ねんころろん ねんころろん Bekku, and also, Kitahara Hakushu’s Jogashima no ame ‘Rain in Jogashima’ – one of my 雨はふるふる 城ヶ島の磯に favourite poems – presented here in Tadashi Yanada’s popular composition. It was fun 利休鼠の 雨がふる doing three clever arrangements by Tomoko Iwakawa of the ‘dou-you’ children’s songs 雨は真珠か 夜明けの霧か Kanariya ‘Canary’, Nanatsu kono ‘Seven baby crows’, and Aoimeno ningyo ‘American doll’. 吹上の水の音 それともわたしの 忍び泣き そよかぜにゆられつつ 舟はゆくゆく 通り矢のはなを ただひとりただひとり I enjoyed singing the well-known Ice-cream no uta ‘Ice-cream Song’ and getting my mouth 濡れて帆上げた ぬしの舟 夏の夜を嘆きたり ええ 舟は櫓でやる 櫓は唄でやる round Hayakuchi kotobao no uta ‘Tongue-twister’. Although I couldn’t resist adding a few あゝ甘し 唄は船頭さんの 心意気 English tongue-twisters as well at the very end! あゝ楽し 雨はふるふる 日はうす曇る あゝうれし 舟はゆくゆく 帆がかすむ 寺のかげ水に落ち 柔らかに鳩睡（ねむ）る 月いでて水しろく

NI6357 4 NI6357 17 むなしく暮れて あかしやの金と赤とがちるぞえな 夕焼け Two young girls are in disgrace and have been told off; After being scolded, one young girl is sent on an かはたれの秋の光にちるぞえな わが掌を errand to the town while the other girl looks after the baby boy and lulls him to sleep. In the evening it is 片恋の薄着のねるのわがうれひ かなしく染めぬ lonely on the outskirts of the town and you can hear the foxes barking, which makes them afraid. They 「曳舟」の水のほとりをゆくころを 日暮れ don’t say that they had been told off but you can see it in their tearful eyes. Their village is far over the やはらかな君が吐息のちるぞえな ひぐらし mountain and in the Spring you can see the cherry blossoms. They wonder when they might be able to あかしやの金と赤とがちるぞえな ひぐれに聞く see the flowers once more.

暗く よごれたところほど 春の宵 さくらが咲くと About 100 years ago the U.S. sent over a shipment of blue-eyed dolls; only one survived. The plastic 花屋がきれいに見える 花ばかり さくら横ちょう blue-eyed doll, who was born in America, still had lots of tears in its eyes when it arrived at the dock in ずらりと並んだ 屋台店の中の 想出す 恋の昨日 Japan. “I cannot speak your language, what should I do if I lose my way?” it said. Kind Japanese girls, 文字どおり花の店 君はもうこゝにゐないと please play gently with her and look after her. あゝ いつも 花の女王 店の女王は 七十五キロをピンと越す貫禄だ ほゝえんだ夢のふるさと そらせた胸をポンとたたき 春の宵 さくらが咲くと The temple bell tolls in the early evening dusk. The mountains are covered with Torreya nutmeg trees. It 花ばかり さくら横ちょう is getting cold and dark and you can just see a vague sunset in the distance. We were hoping to catch a 《ね ごらんなさい この美しさ 会い見るの時はなかろう glimpse of one star shining in the sky but it is not clear enough. Like our love, we may never meet again. シャンゼリゼーの花と ここの花と 「その後どう」「しばらくねえ」と (Man’s song, waiting for the girlfriend who doesn’t come). 花にちがいがあるものか 言ったってはじまらないと たとえばだね そこのお嬢さん 心得て花でも見よう あなたと私と 女にちがいがないように》 春の宵 さくらが咲くと Good night, wild goose! Is that a daddy goose or a gosling? It calls under the blue moonlight. The top 花ばかり さくら横ちょう of the mountain where the geese live is covered with snow, there is the sound of the winter wind, the wind どっとふき出すお客たちを blows. Good night the bell rings. When the wind ceases for a moment you can hear the bell which rings 身ぶり手ぶりよろしくで from the roof of the temple. The dried leaves rustle and Santa Claus comes secretly, tapping on the 女王はやさしくたしなめる window. In the room there is a bright light and a child wrapped in warm pyjamas and blanket. Good 烏 なぜ啼くの night rings the bell. 《シィッ！ そんなに笑うと 烏は山に 花がびっくりするから どうぞおしずかに》 可愛い七つの 子があるからよ (The little boy sings as he eats); Once upon a time there was a prince who had never eaten ice-cream. 可愛 可愛と I am not a prince but I can eat ice-cream whenever I like! When I put it on my tongue it melts in my throat 烏は啼くの like a symphony – mmm! It is so cold and so sweet – ice-cream is fun! (The little girl sings the same song); 日暮れ 可愛 可愛と Once upon a time there was a princess who had never eaten ice-cream! When I eat ice-cream I feel like ひぐらし a princess! Etc. (From the TV show “Okasai to issho). ひぐれに哭く 啼くんだよ ひとひ空しく 山の古巣へ NI6357 16 NI6357 5 垣に残るは ただかつら 如何にいます 父母 It is snowing in the night but we are happy here by the warm glow of the Manchurian stove! Let’s talk 松に歌ふは ただあらし 恙(つつが)なしや 友がき 雨に風に つけても about olden times round the fire. Outside it is very cold, come inside and get warm by the stove. Spring 天上 影は 変わらねど 思い出ずる 故郷 will come soon, so put the willow on the fire. (It is customary in Japan to burn a certain type of willow as 栄枯は移る 世の姿 the winter draws to a close. However, this poem was written whilst the writer was in Manchuria on the 写さんとてか 今もなほ Russian border..). 嗚呼荒城の 夜半の月 志を はたして いつの日にか 帰らん 山は青き 故郷 水は清き 故郷 Gentle Autumn rain, if you go to the village please tell him I couldn’t sleep tonight as well. Please tell him! 唄を忘れた 金糸雀(かなりや)は 後の山に棄てましょか いえ、いえ、それはなりませぬ さくら さくら The seagull flies away along the coastline with such a sad cry. It flies along the shore. In the light of the 唄を忘れた 金糸雀は やよいの空は setting sun you can see the gleam of wet feathers. Listen to the cry of the seagull. Poor bird, it fled from 背戸の子藪に 埋けましょか 見わたす限り the capital and now flies over the seashore. いえ、いえ、それはなりませぬ かすみか雲か 匂いぞ出ずる 唄を忘れた 金糸雀は いざや いざや Through the pine branches one can glimpse only the ruined remains of the old castle, but I can imagine 柳の鞭で ぶちましょか a time when there were big parties at cherry blossom time. Where is the glory of the olden days now? In いえ、いえ、それはかわいそう 見にゆかん the Autumn they prepared for battle and set up the fort in the frosty air. There were skeins of wild geese flying overhead and the swords glittered. Where is the glory of the olden days now? The castle sits alone 唄を忘れた 金糸雀は remembering past days. It is midnight in the cold moonlight, and the wind sighs in the pine trees. 象牙の船に 銀の櫂(かい) 月夜の海に 浮かべれば 青い月夜の浜辺には 忘れた唄を おもいだす 親を探して鳴く鳥が Why won’t the canary sing a song? Has he forgotten how? Shall we throw him away onto the mountain? 波の国から生まれ出る No, no, you can’t do that! 濡れた翼の銀の色 Shall we bury him in the bamboo grove in the west? No, no, you can’t do that! 夜鳴く鳥の悲しさは How can we make the canary sing? If you put him in an ivory ship with silver oars and float him on the 兎追いし かの山 親をたずねて海こえて sea in the moonlight then he will remember his songs. 小鮒釣りし かの川 月夜の国へ消えてゆく The canary has forgotten his songs. Perhaps we should hit him with a willow whip. No, no, we won’t do 夢は今も めぐりて 銀のつばさの浜千鳥 that, that would be a pity! (Written one Christmas night after the writer was in a church. He saw a small 忘れがたき 故郷 light and thought about the canary. A sort of vision).

NI6357 6 NI6357 15 昔はとても食べられない つげておくれ アイスクリーム アイスクリーム あのひとに Remember the mountain where the rabbit plays? Remember the river with the minnows? I dream about わたしは王女ではないけれど わたしは them all the time. I can never forget my birthplace. I wonder how my parents are, how my friends are. アイスクリームを召し上がる 今夜もねむらないでゐた―― It is raining and windy here but never in the memory of my homeland. Someday my dream will come true スプーンですくって ピチャ チャチャ と and I will return to that clear lake at the foot of the blue mountain. 舌にのせると トロン トロ あのひとに つげておくれ のどを音楽隊が通ります しぐれ プカプカ ドンドン 冷たいね Under the March sky there are so many cherry blossoms that it looks like mist or a cloud. One can smell ルラ ルラ ルラ 甘いね チータカタッタッタ おいしいね the wonderful fragrance. Come, Let us go, oh please let us go and see the cherry blossom! アイスクリームは 楽しいね かもめかもめ 去りゆくかもめ A winter song; In the frozen cold air at the beach, the young plovers call sadly, searching for their parents おとぎ話の王子でも 昔はとても食べられない かくもさみしくくちずさみ アイスクリーム アイスクリーム in the blue moonlight. Their haunting cries travel across the evening air as they swoop over the waves, 渚はてなくつたひゆく the moon glittering silver on their wings.

かもめかもめ 雪の降る夜は 楽しいペチカ 入日のかたにぬれそぼち The red and gold leaves are falling off the acacia beside the river, gently drifting down from the trees in ペチカ燃えろよ お話しましょ ぴよろとなくはかもめどり the autumn light. We walk along the water’s edge. My feeling of love is not returned and therefore I feel むかしむかしよ あわれみやこをのがれきて cold and uncertain, as if I was wearing an almost transparent gown. Across the water a barge goes by 燃えろよ、ペチカ 海のなぎさをつたひゆく and I can hear your soft sigh. The acacia leaves mirror my sadness, gently falling in the sunset. 雪の降る夜は 楽しいペチカ ペチカ燃えろよ おもては寒い The market is overcrowded, rather dirty and dark. Among the myriad of stalls there is one flower shop. 栗や栗やと The owner weighs at least 75 kilos! She is a great madame, a large lady full of pride who draws attention 呼びます ペチカ 春 高楼の 花の宴 めぐる盃 かげさして to herself and her flowers by gesticulating and patting her ample chest. Look, she says, gesturing at a young girl, there is no difference between my flowers and those in the Champs Elysees, just as there is no 雪の降る夜は 楽しいペチカ 千代の松が枝 わけいでし むかしの光 いまいづこ difference between you and I! The customers burst out laughing. With extravagent motions, the queen ペチカ燃えろよ じき春来ます of the flower stall urges them to hush, saying “Shh, if you laugh too much, my flowers will be surprised, いまに楊も so please keep quiet!” 萌えましょ ペチカ 秋 陣営の 霜の色 鳴き行く雁の 数見せて 植うるつるぎに 照りそひし むかしの光 いまいづこ In the autumn sunset the cicadas make their noise. I am all alone and feel so empty. The colour of the sunset stains my hands and the cicadas make their noise. しぐれ しぐれ いま 荒城の 夜半の月 もし あの里を とほるなら 替らぬ光 たがためぞ NI6357 14 NI6357 7 In a spring evening the cherry trees fill the cherry alley with their blooms. It makes me think of you and of 叱られて 叱られて おやすみ おやすみ 雁がなく the past. The flowers remind me of happier times in my home town. It is the Queen of flowers. Will あの子は町まで お使いに 親の雁か 子の雁か there be a chance to see each other again - how are you doing? I have not seen you for a long time. It この子は坊やを ねんねしな 青い月夜に なきわたる is no use asking these questions, keep that in your mind. Let us praise these flowers with their bitter-sweet 夕べさみしい 村はずれ こんときつねが なきゃせぬか memories. 雁のお山は 真っ白に 雪のあたまが とんがって 叱られて 叱られて ひゅうる ひゅうる 風がふく 口には出さねど 眼になみだ Crows – why are you calling? The crow has seven sweet babies in the mountain and calls sweetly to them. 二人のお里は あの山を おやすみ おやすみ 鐘がなる If you go to the old nest in the mountain you can see the crow chicks with their round sweet eyes. 越えてあなた（彼方）の 花の村 風の絶間に 鐘がなる ほんに花見は いつのこと 聖寺（おてら）の屋根から 鐘がなる The baby is wrapped in a kimono and strapped to the mother’s back; Hush, hush, how sweet the sleeping 枯れた 葉っぱは かさこそと child is! When he wakes up and starts to cry his face is not so sweet, there, there. Today is the 25th day サンタクロスは こっそりと of the month and tomorrow is the day that we will take him to the shrine to be blessed, hush, hush. The blue fish, seabream and shrimps all hide themselves スプーンですくって ピチャ チャチャ under the waves. 鐘が鳴ります 舌にのせると トロン トロ かやの木山に のどを音楽隊が通ります 山は寒空 プカプカ ドンドン 冷たいね It is raining heavily on the shore of Jogashima. The rain is a dull rat-grey colour. It seems to have the 遠茜（とおあかね） ルラ ルラ ルラ 甘いね substance of a pearl or is like the evening mist. Or maybe it is just my tears? My lover’s boat is off the チータカタッタッタ おいしいね point of Toriya, raising its dripping sail. It is moved by oars and the rowing is the song and the song is 一つ星さえ アイスクリームは 楽しいね the oarsman’s heart. Still the rain comes, the day is a cloudy grey and the bobbing boat with its distant ちらつくものを sails disappears into the mist. なぜにちらりとも おとぎ話の王女でも 出て見えぬ NI6357 8 NI6357 13 「ふるさと」－この歌は、それぞれの人にとって生まれ育った場 所というのは田舎でも都会でも大事な意味がある、という歌です Do you know the tongue-twister? You clench your fists and lick your lips, clear your brain 。「忘れがたきふるさと」と歌詞にありますが、そこにはいつの and speak! Raw wheat, raw rice, raw eggs! It looks difficult but it isn’t. Centre your energy 日かふるさとに戻りたい、という希望がこめられています。 in your midriff, wobble your cheeks and speak out while looking up at the blue sky! A １９９１年以来２７年に渡って日本を訪れた回数は数え切れない symphony, songs and concertos! If I practice alone I get in a muddle and I don’t think I am any better if you are listening – everything puts me off - but let’s try it all together. Fire ほどで、私にとって日本は第二の故郷と思っています。理由は幾 engines, street sweepers, water sweepers! つかありまして、いつもとても温かい歓待をして下さるから、そ して私が日本の歴史、文化、田舎の景色の美しさが大好きだから 、自身も歌う日本の歌曲が、心の琴線に響くからです。 今回はエイドリアン・ファーマーと私が共演する３枚目の歌曲の ＣＤで、選曲は皆さんにとって馴染みがあるもの、ないもの両方 を混ぜて入れてみました。よく知られている曲の一つ「荒城の月 」は、月の光を浴びた古城に響く侍の霊の歌です。「さくらさく ら」も世界中で知られています。あまり知られていない曲として In memory of Tsutomu Miyazawa は、「市の花屋」。これは、ややお転婆な女性のことを歌った楽 しい歌で、そのほかにも「舟唄(片恋)」－こちらはピアノの部分 がまさに、アカシアの落ち葉が川を漂う様を表現している美しい 秋の曲－があります。 同じ詩でも違った編曲にして楽しむことがありますが、例えば加 藤周一の作詞による「さくら横ちょう」は、今回は別宮貞雄の作 Cover image: ‘Eloquent Autumn’ (1995) by Tatsuya Ishiodori 曲によるものです。同じく北原白秋の「城ケ島の雨」、これは私 の一番好きな詩の一つですが、ここではお馴染みの梁田貞による 作曲になっています。 岩河智子の優れた編曲による三曲の童謡、「かなりや」「七つの 子」「青い目の人形」を歌うのはとても楽しいことでした。また 、よく知られている「アイスクリームの歌」や「早口ことばのう Recording Production & Engineering: Adrian Farmer & Antony Smith た」を歌うのも楽しかったです。早口ことばのうたの時は最後に Recorded by Nimbus Records at Wyastone Leys, Monmouth, UK 25-27 January 2017 英語での早口言葉を付け足したくなりました。 c 2018 Wyastone Estate Ltd © 2018 Wyastone Estate Ltd
