Eiraku’s explanation of Rakugo, including its history, the paper fan and “tenugui” towel as props and the use of changes in voice to depict different characters, was an entertaining introduction to this traditional Japanese comic storytelling. Two experiments were conducted involving ambiguous noun phrases (right- versus left-branching). and relative clause constructions containing an adjunct with ambiguous scope of modification. Results of careful examination of the FO contours and downstepping patterns reveal that inter- and intra-speaker variability as well as depth of syntactic embedding are important factors in determining the prosodic phrasing. 1 Introduction Many acoustic studies in recent years have been concerned with the role suprasegmental features play in helping cue the syntactic structure of a sentence (e.g. Cooper et al., 1978; Klatt, 1975; Lehiste, 1973; Lehiste et al., 1976; Streeter, 1978; Terken & Collier, 1992; among many others). There is a wealth of literature concerning the disambiguation of syntactic ambiguity, discussing acoustic features such as duration, amplitude and fundamental frequency (FO) which provide a crutch to cueing differing interpretations of an otherwise ambiguous string of segments. Klatt (1975) found in English that increased duration can mark the ends of major syntactic units. Streeter (1978) showed that both duration and pitch contour, as well as amplitude, seI"Ve as salient cues to determining syntactic boundaries in ambiguous algebraic expressions. Lehiste (1973, 1976) found that duration, and FO to a certain extent, plays a major role in disambiguation of many syntactically ambiguous sentences. Russell, Gifu University ABSTRACT As the number of mixed race people grows in Japan, anxieties about miscegenation in today’s context of intensified globalization continue to increase. Indeed, the multiracial reality has recently gotten attention and led to heightened discussions surrounding it in Japanese society, specifically, in the media. Despite the fact that race mixing is not a new phenomenon even in “homogeneous” Japan, where the presence of multiracial people has challenged the prevailing notion of Japaneseness, racially mixed people have been a largely neglected group in both scholarly literature and in wider Japanese society. My dissertation project offers a remedy for this absence by focusing on representations of mixed race people in postwar Japanese popular culture. During and after the U.S. Occupation of Japan (1945-1952), significant numbers of racially mixed children were born of relationships between Japanese women and American servicemen. In the 1960s, when Japan experienced the postwar economic miracle and redefined itself as a great power, mixed race Japanese entertainers (e.g., models, actors, and singers) became popular.

It was named after Camden New Jersey which was the manufacturing and distribution center of RCA Victor records. Much of the material released by Camden were reissues of albums released by RCA Victor, usually with a few less songs. Initially the label was used for classical releases but soon started releasing popular, country and comedy albums. Albums released by Camden included ones released by RCA of Canada using the same numbering system. These RCA of Canada albums were only distributed in Canada and were not listed in the Schwann catalogs.
