    Semiotica 2016; aop Massimo Leone* Nature and culture in visual communication: Japanese variations on Ludus Naturae DOI 10.1515/sem-2015-0145 Abstract: The neurophysiology of vision and cognition shapes the way in which human beings visually “read” the environment. A biological instinct, probably selected as adaptive through evolution, pushes them to recognize coherent shapes in chaotic visual patterns and to impute the creation of these shapes to an anthropomorphic agency. In the west as in the east, in Italy as in Japan, human beings have identified faces, bodies, and landscapes in the bizarre chromatic, eidetic, and topologic configurations of stones, clouds, and other natural elements, as though invisible painters and sculptors had depicted the former in the latter. However, culture-specific visual ideologies immediately and deeply mold such cross-cultural instinct of pattern recognition and agency attribution. Giants and mythical monsters are seen in clouds in the west as in the east; both the Italian seventeenth-century naturalist and the Japanese seventeenth-century painter identify figures of animals and plants in stones. And yet, the ways in which they articulate the semantics of this visual recogni- tion, identify its icons, determine its agency, and categorize it in relation to an ontological framework diverge profoundly, according to such exquisitely paths of differentiation that only the study of culture, together with that of nature, can account for. It is a serial cultural property that has eight component parts, all of which are linked to the worship of a sacred island that has continued from the fourth century to the present day. These component parts include Okitsu-miya of Munakata Taisha, which encompasses the entire island of Okinoshima and its three attendant reefs, located in the strait between the Japanese archipelago and the Korean peninsula; Okitsu- miya Yohaisho and Nakatsu-miya of Munakata Taisha, located on the island of Oshima; and Hetsu-miya of Munakata Taisha and the Shimbaru-Nuyama Mounded Tomb Group, located on the main island of Kyushu. Okinoshima has unique archaeological sites that have survived nearly intact, providing a chronological account of how ancient rituals based on nature worship developed from the fourth to the ninth centuries. It is of outstanding archaeological value also because of the number and quality of offerings discovered there, underscoring the great importance of the rituals and serving as evidence of their evolution over a period of 500 years, in the midst of a process of dynamic overseas exchange in East Asia.

Title: Visualizing the classics : reading surimono and ky ka books as social and cultural history Issue Date: 2017-10-10 ō Chapter 5: Visualizing the classics: Intellectual networks and cultural nostalgia 5.1 Introduction This chapter investigates how kyōka poets acquired their knowledge of classical literature, discusses the way in which poets and illustrators visualized literature in their projects, and reflects on what their motivations were for referring to specific elements in cultural history. Shunman’s kokugaku connections have been elucidated by Tanaka, and kokugaku influences in two surimono series that Shunman designed in the first half of the 1810s have been researched by Carpenter.302 My investigation continues on their approach by tracing how other major kyōka poets and surimono designers were connected to intellectual networks of their time; in particular to scholars of the classical texts that inspired literary surimono series. Moreover, textual information in the surimono is matched to contemporaneous scholarship. Did knowledge of classical literature enter kyōka society via printed exegetical texts in commercial editions, or are ties to scholars generally so close that surimono creators had access to such knowledge already before the general public did? How did kyōka poets relate to the ideological underpinnings of the kokugaku movement? And is there any relation between birth class and the influx of cultural knowledge detectable in kyōka society? Answering these questions will clarify where surimono creators gained their understanding of the classical texts they visualized, and what role each of these creators played.

Bronze statue of Tokugawa Ieyasu in his youth 1542 (Tenbun 11) Born in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture (Until age 1) 1547 (Tenbun 16) Got kidnapped on the way taken to Sunpu as a hostage and sold to Oda Nobuhide. (At age 6) 1549 (Tenbun 18) Hirotada, his father, was assassinated. Taken to Sunpu as a hostage of Imagawa Yoshimoto. (At age 8) 1557 (Koji 3) Marries Lady Tsukiyama and changes his name to Motoyasu. (At age 16) 1559 (Eiroku 2) Returns to Okazaki to pay a visit to the family grave. Nobuyasu, his first son, is born. (At age 18) 1560 (Eiroku 3) Oda Nobunaga defeats Imagawa Yoshimoto in Okehazama. OLD MAN MAD ABOUT DRAWING KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI BORN IN 1760 AND DIED IN 1849 IN EDO, JAPAN Japanese painter and printmaker, known for his enormous influence on both Eastern and Western art THE MAN HISTORY knows as Katsushika Hokusai was born in the Year of the Dragon in the bustling city now known as Tokyo. After working for eight stormy years in the studio of a popular artist who resented the boy's greater skill, Hokusai was finally thrown out. At first he earned his daily bowl of rice as a street peddler, selling red peppers and ducking if he saw his old teacher coming. Soon he was illustrating comic books, then turning out banners, made-to-order greeting cards for the rich, artwork for novels full of murders and ghosts, and drawings of scenes throughout his beloved Edo. Changing one's name was a Japanese custom, but Hokusai carried it to an extreme—he changed his more than thirty times. No one knows why. Perhaps he craved variety, or was self-centered (thinking that every change in his art style required a new identity), or merely liked being eccentric. One name he kept longer than most was Hokusai, meaning "Star of the Northern Constellation," in honor of a Buddhist god he especially revered. He did like variety in dwellings. Notorious for never cleaning his studio, he took the easy way out whenever the place became too disgustingly dirty: he moved. Hokusai moved a total of ninety-three times—putting a burden on his family and creating a new set of neighbors for himself at least once a year.

With the beginning of modern times (which began in Japan around 1600), however, a radical turn around took place in the Land of the Rising Sun. Under the government of the Tokugawa shoguns (the Edo period, 1603-1867) the island nation cut itself off almost completely from the outside world. At that time various rulers and warlords began to issue gold and silver coins. Conducting the war swallowed up vast sums, and in many areas of Japan there were rich deposits of gold and silver – so the most obvious thing for the domain lords and minor feudal rulers to do was to produce their own money. Soon private gold and silver coins were in circulation throughout the country. The best-known gold coins were those of the Takeda clan, called koshukin. They were traded according to their weight.

It focuses mainly on painting and graphic arts, and selected aspects of photography, design and architecture. Appropriation from Japanese sources triggered the articulation of new visual and conceptual languages which helped forge new art and art educational paradigms that would define the modern age. Starting with Polish fin-de-siècle Japonisme, it examines the role of Western European artistic centres, mainly Paris, in the initial dissemination of Japonisme in Poland, and considers the exceptional case of Julian Żałat, who had first-hand experience of Japan. The second phase of Polish Japonisme (1901-1918) was nourished on local, mostly Cracovian, infrastructure put in place by the ‘godfather’ of Polish Japonisme Żeliks Manggha Jasieski. His pro-Japonisme agency is discussed at length.
