Dear Fellow Officers,

Over 90 boys and officers meet in Carrickfergus Methodist Church as East Antrim Battalion received the baton which conveyed her Majesty message to Brigade Council. The baton was handed over to East Antrim by Jonathan Gracey, National Director NI and with the help of the local Mayor, Alderman Billy Ashe, MLA and Councillor Andrew Wilson we enjoyed a very historic occasion in the life of the battalion. Our Chaplain, Rev. Colin McClure open the proceedings with prayer and following some short speeches all of the companies represented had the opportunity to have their photographs taken with the baton. The website has the full story and we also received some good publicity in the local newspapers.

In April we held a very successful quiz evening and supper and that event replaced our AGM which will now be held every three years. Next April we will repeat it in Ballynure.

I would like to express my appreciation to all officers who worked at company and Battalion level throughout the last session.

We still have 2 vacancies which need filled, Co-ordinator of Company Section sports and Company Section Secretary.

The executive will again organise a limited number of competitions whilst we seek to fill these vacancies.

I hope you are aware that the year 2013 will mark 125th Anniversary of the BB in Northern . The Battalion has placed articles in the , Larne and Carrickfergus Advertiser since January 2011 to highlight the work of the BB in East Antrim. We hope as a result of this to recruit 125 new boys into the East Antrim Battalion. Captains received a copy of posters in early August to advertise the work of the Battalion in the different areas. The BBUK has also started a campaign to recruit new members and the Battalion Secretary will be forwarding information in relation to that very soon.

On Sunday 7th October we will hold our annual Church parade and our Officers Dedication Service in St Nicholas Church Carrickfergus.

So at the start of a new session can I encourage you to get involved more with your local company. Give that little bit extra and collectively we can achieve our object of Advancing Christ's Kingdom among boys.

God bless you in this new session.

Yours sincerely

Drew Buchanan MBE Battalion President

Executive Report 2012

In this annual Executive report we give thanks to God for all the goodness He has bestowed upon our Battalion throughout the year.

We would like to express our thanks to all the Officers and Leaders who work hard each and every week within the Battalion, we appreciate the loyalty and work that is carried out with the aim of the Boys’ Brigade, the Advancement of Christ’s Kingdom amongst boys, being the centre of this work.

We also would like to express our thanks to all those who are involved in duties at NID level.

The Executive also welcomed the return of John Cathcart who has accepted the position of Training Officer within the Battalion.

The year started with a major change to our Battalion calendar. The Annual Battalion Parade and Officer Dedication Service were combined and held on Sunday 2nd October 2011 in Ballyclare.

The Executive took the decision to change the Parade from March, the end of the BB year, to October, the start of the BB year, in the hope that this would encourage a larger attendance with everyone feeling fresh and renewed after the summer break. This indeed proved to be a very rewarding decision as there were 16 out of our 23 companies who took part and we were blessed with dry weather. It was wonderful to witness Ballyclare Presbyterian Church being filled to capacity with Officers and Boys and at least 50 others in the overflow hall.

The Executive took this opportunity to make a presentation to Mr Frank Picton to thank him for all his hard work and dedication as Battalion Secretary.

Battalion events have continued throughout the year in all sections. We would like to congratulate 1st Larne Juniors on being awarded the Fitzell Trophy and 8th Carrickfergus on being awarded the McCune Trophy.

Company Section competitions and activities have been running without much upheaval due to the organisational skills of the President and various Company Section Officers. This role is usually performed by a Sports Officer and although this position remains vacant, the Executive hope and pray that someone will come forward in the very near future.

The results from the Battalion Competitions are as follows:- Table Tennis Junior Singles was won by James Crone (1st Ballyclare) Seniors Singles was won by Mark Turner (1st Ballyclare) Junior Doubles was won by Kyle Hutton & Ross Jamison (8th Carrick) Senior Doubles was won by Alex Denney & Mark Turner (1st Ballyclare)

1st Greenisland won the Outdoor Junior 7 aside Football competition for the third year in a row. 5th Carrick won the Senior Joga Bonito

Badminton Junior 1st was Kyle Hutton 8th Carrickfergus Seniors 1st was Aaron Hutton 8th Carrickfergus Junior Doubles was won by Kyle Hutton / Christopher McElveen 8th Carrickfergus

6

Senior Doubles was won by Jedd Gould / Jonathan Nelson 4th Carrickfergus The Mini Golf Trophy was retained by Ross Jamison 8th Carrickfergus who also went on to win the Battalion Golf Competition.

Volleyball was won by 8th Carrickfergus.

Junior 5-a-side football (indoor) was won by 2nd Larne.

Junior 7 –a-side football (indoor) was won by 5th Carrickfergus.

The Christian Education exam was held in March with 8 out of 10 companies returning papers.

Junior Section competitions and activities have all been running as usual. Congratulations go to 1st Larne on winning the Quiz Kids heat and losing by one point in the NID final after a tiebreak.

Congratulations also go to 1st Ballyeaston who won the Battalion 5-a-side football competition and then went on to win the NID Spring competition.

Anchors...... The Annual Fun and Games Competition was won by 1st Ballyclare B team.

The Colouring competition winners were:- P1 & P2: Ben Blacoe 1st Ballylinney P3 & P4: Stephen Smith 1st Raloo. Congratulations to all the winners.

The Junior/Anchor Joint Carol Service was held in Greenisland, the attendance was very disappointing and the Executive with consultation at Council level will be looking at ways to increase attendance.

The Executive hope and pray that all officers are continuing to prepare and provide a varied programme for all boys at all levels with aim of recruiting a further 125 boys by the year 2013 when we will be celebrating 125years of Boys’ Brigade in .

The Executive wishes anyone attending holiday or camp weekends a safe and rewarding experience. We also would like to wish all Officers and Boys a refreshing break from Boys’ Brigade during the summer and pray that each and everyone will return renewed and ready for the new session in September 2012.

I present this report on behalf of the Battalion Executive.

Battalion Executive

The Battalion Executive consists of the following members: 1. Battalion President and chair of Executive – 2. Vice Presidents (chair of section councils) as elected by each section to represent and feedback from Council meetings; Company Section – Junior Section – Anchors – 3. Secretary – 4. Treasurer, to administer the finances of the Battalion including dues, expenses and sources of income/funding – 5. Chaplain – 6. Training Officer, representing the training committee dealing with all aspects of training within the Battalion – 7. Northern Ireland District Executive Representative – 8. One elected representative from each section; Company Section – Junior Section – Anchors – All its members are elected at each Council meeting or the AGM.

Whilst each section council will deal with their own affairs, i.e. competitions, sports, training etc, the Executive serves as a forum to facilitate discussion of issues common to all sections, control finance, offer assistance and guidance, and represent local concerns at regional and district levels.

To assist the Executive as they seek to be of assistance to Companies of the Battalion, a series of informal visitations are arranged to facilitate an opportunity to meet with individual companies and their officers. This is not an inspection, but an opportunity to meet, learn and share together, with input available from the visitors (with prior arrangement!). As the visit is informal there is no feedback as such, general comments will be shared and the visit noted at the next Executive meeting.

The Executive is yours, elected by you, seeking to serve you. If you have any queries with regard to the Battalion, or problems within your Company, contact the secretary in confidence for assistance.
