He was ordained in 1946, became the bishop of Ombi in 1958, and became the archbishop of Krakow in 1964. He was made a cardi- nal by Pope Paul VI in 1967, and in 1978 became the first non-Italian pope in more than 400 years. He died in Italy in 2005. It was announced in July 2013 that he would be declared a in April of the following year. Early Life: Growing up, John Paul was athletic and enjoyed skiing and swimming. He went to Kra- kow's Jagiellonian University in 1938 where he showed an interest in theater and poetry. Rise within the church: John Paul spent two years in where he finished his doctorate in theology. Returned to Poland in 1948, served in several parishes in and around Krakow. Became the bishop of Ombi in 1958 and then the archbishop of Krakow six years later. Considered one of the Catholic Church's leading thinkers, he participated in the Second Vatican Council— sometimes called Vatican II. As a member of the council, John Paul helped the church to examine its position in the world. Well regarded for his contributions to the church, John Paul was made a cardinal in 1967 by Pope Paul VI. Becoming Pope: As the leader of the Catholic Church, he traveled the world, visiting more than 100 countries to spread his mes- sage of faith and peace. But he was close to home when he faced the greatest threat to his life. In 1981, an assassin shot John Paul twice in St. Peter's Square in Vatican City. Fortunately, he was able to recover from his injuries and later forgave his attacker. Legacy: A vocal advocate for human rights, John Paul often spoke out about suffering in the world. He held strong positions on many topics, including his opposition to capital punishment. A charismatic figure, John Paul used his influence to bring about political change and is credited with the fall of communism in his native Poland. He could be harsh with those who disagreed with him and that he would not compromise his hard-line stance on certain issues, such as contraception. In his later years, John Paul's health appeared to be failing, In 2001, he had Parkinson's disease, a brain disorder often charac- terized by shaking. But there was never any official announcement about his illness from the Vatican. Pope John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, at the age of 84, at his Vatican City residence. More than 3 million people say good-bye to their beloved religious leader at St. Peter's Basilica before his funeral on April 8. On July 5, 2013, the Vatican announced that the Roman Catholic Church would declare Pope John Paul II a saint . ******* St. John was born at Capistrano, Italy. He studied law at the University of Perugia and practiced as a law- yer in the courts of Naples. King of Naples appointed him governor of Perugia. His education was thor- ough. His talents and success were great. At the age of 30 he entered the Franciscan novitiate and was ordained a priest four years later. John’s preaching attracted great throngs at a time of religious apathy and confusion. He and 12 Franciscan brethren were received in the countries of central Europe as angels of God. They were instrumental in reviving a dying faith and devotion. He died on October 23, 1456. Saint John of Capistrano is Patron Saint of: Judges ******* Saint Anthony Mary Claret, C.M.F. was a Spanish Roman Catholic archbishop and missionary, and was confessor of Isabella II of Spain. He founded the congregation of Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, commonly called the Claretians. The “spiritual father of Cuba” was a missionary, religious founder, social reformer, queen’s chaplain, writer and publisher, archbishop, and refugee. He was a Spaniard whose work took him to the Canary Islands, Cuba, , Paris, and to the First Vatican Council. Ordained at 28, he was prevented by ill health from entering religious life as a Carthusian or as a Jesuit, but went on to become one of Spain’s most popular preachers. Anthony spent 10 years giving popular missions and retreats, always placing great emphasis on the Eucharist and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It was said that his ro- sary was never out of his hand. At age 42, he founded a religious institute of missionaries beginning with five young priests, known today as the Claretians. Anthony was appointed to head the much-neglected archdiocese of Santiago in Cuba. He began its reform by almost ceaseless preaching and hearing of confessions, and suffered bitter opposition mainly for opposing concu- binage and giving instruction to black slaves. At Vatican I, where he was a staunch defender of the doctrine of infallibility, Anthony won the admiration of his fellow . Cardinal Gibbons of Baltimore remarked of him, “There goes a true saint.” At the age of 63, he died in exile near the border of Spain. OCTOBER, is the month of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary.

We show our love and devotion to Mary by praying the rosary each day.

St. Vincent De Paul Society Hotline Number 916-733-2010 Sometimes we may feel slighted when we see that our neighbor seems to have more than we do, failing to recog- nize all the blessings God has bestowed on us as well. It's our job to appreciate what we have and share these gifts with those who are less fortunate. After all, God provides for all our needs! Maybe we are strapped for money, too, but there are many other ways to share our gifts with oth- ers. Maybe we can mow a neighbors lawn or watch their children, call or visit a home bound person, offering a car- ing smile and sincere concern for what they may be deal- ing with. And, if you can, your donations of non- perishable food items to our Food Closet go a long way in easing the burdens for those who can't provide food for their families. Thank you for all your love, generosity, and concern for all God's children! Thank you!
