Tarihte bu riskin görülüp çalışma yapılması çok eskilere dayanır. Bu anlamda otomatik sürüşü baz alan ilk ATO çalışmaları 1960’lı yıllarda görülmüştür. ATO fonksiyonu sinyalizasyon ve raylı sistemlerde otomasyon anlamında bir devrimdir. ATP güvenlikle ile ilgili işlevlere sahipken ATO tren işletimini dolayısıyla yolcu konforunu da ilgilendirmektedir. IEC 62290 standardı raylı sistem otomasyon seviyelerini tanımlamıştır. GoA (Grade of Automation) olarak kısaltılan bu tabir 4 seviyede ölçülmektedir. GoA1, GoA2, GoA3 ve GoA4 işletim seviyeleri insan faktörünün tren kontrolüne etkisini yansıtmaktadır. Bu fonksiyonel sınıflandırmada yer alamayan sistemler ise genel anlamda GoA0 olarak tanımlanır. Bu seviyede herhangi bir otomasyon görülmez. GoA1 seviyede tren kapılarını açıp kapatma, treni istasyondan kaldırma, limit hız altında treni sürme (hızlanma/yavaşlama) tamamen makinist kontrolü altındadır. Bu seviyeye örnek olarak İstanbul metrolarından M1 Yenikapı-Havalimanı/Kirazlı metrosu verilebilir. GoA2 seviyede insan faktörü azalmıştır.
