Abstract: This article is about the way that the notion of religion is understood and used in election manifestos of populist and nationalist right-wing political parties in Germany and the Netherlands between 2002 and 2021. In order to pursue such enquiry, a discourse on the nature of manifestos of political parties in general and election manifestos specifically is required. Election manifestos are important socio-scientific and historical sources. The central question that this article poses is how the notion of religion is included in the election manifestos of three Dutch (LPF, PVV, and FvD) and one German (AfD) populist and nationalist parties, and what this inclusion reveals about the connection between religion and populist parties. Religious keywords in the election manifestos of said political parties are researched and discussed. It leads to the conclusion that the notion of religion is not central to these political parties, unless it is framed as a stand against Islam. Nayla Fawzi, Magdalena Obermaier, and Carsten Reinemann Introduction In Germany, the phenomenon of populism has been discussed intensively in recent years; however, empirical research on populism and populist political communication is scarce. This shortage can presumably be explained by the populist parties’ lack of success on a national level, a characteristic that distinguishes Germany from many other European countries (Bornschier, 2012). More fundamentally, consensus is missing as to whether some of the parties analyzed can actually be considered populist (Decker, 2014; Gebhardt, 2013; Holtmann, Krappidel, & Rehse, 2006; Jaschke, 2013; Neu, 2003; Oberreuter, 2011; Werz, 2013). The few existing empirical studies are mainly single-case studies of mainstream political movements, parties, or politicians, all partially behaving in a “populist manner.” In addition, little international comparative research includes German populist parties, their communication, their media resonance, or the effects of their communication on citizens (for exceptions, see Kienpointner, 2005; Pauwels, 2014; Rooduijn, de Lange, & van der Brug, 2014). Today, after nearly 20 years, the wars are over, in most areas peace has set in, and stability has been achieved. What Makes Klezmer so Special? Geraldine Auerbach ponders the world wide popularity of klezmer Written November 2009 for JMI Newsletter no 17 Picture this: Camden Town’s Jazz Café on 12 August 2009 with queues round the block including Lords of the realm, hippies, skull-capped portly gents, and trendy young men and women. What brought them all together? They were all coming to a concert of music called Klezmer! So what exactly is klezmer, and how, in the twenty-first century, does it still manage to resonate with and thrill the young and the old, the hip and the nostalgic, alike? In the 18th and 19th centuries, in the Jewish towns and villages of Eastern Europe the Yiddish term 'klezmer' referred to Jewish musicians themselves. They belonged to professional guilds and competed for work at weddings and parties for the Jewish community – as well as the local gentry. Their repertory included specific Jewish tunes as well as local hit songs played on the instruments popular in the locality. Performance was influenced by the ornamented vocal style of the synagogue cantor. When life became intolerable for Jews in Eastern Europe in the late nineteenth century, and opportunity came for moving to newer worlds – musicians brought this music to the west, adapting all the while to immigrant tastes and the new recording scene. During the mid-twentieth century, this type of music fell from favour as the sons and daughters of Jewish immigrants turned to American and British popular styles. But just a few decades later, klezmer was back! A new generation of American musicians reclaimed the music of their predecessors. -

M u z y k a l i a VII · Judaica 2 “There on the willows we hung our”…violins: On Old Macewas, Synagogues and Klezmorim∗ B e n j a m i n V o g e l The fragment of the popular Psalm 137 quoted in the title of this essay signals a new path of inquiry investigating musical instruments as symbols in Judaism, more specifically as decorations of tombstones and synagogues in historically Polish lands and as an iconographic resource for research into the history of musical instruments. During the last few centuries, musical instruments appeared very rarely on Jewish tombstones in Central Europe. Starting with the 18th century they were painted more often on walls inside synagogues as illustrations to Psalms 137 and 150. Most of those temples were made of wood and some of stone, but no wooden synagogue and only a dozen or so stone ones survived World War II. However, some archival photographs and paintings still bear witness to better days. Two important questions remains: how accurately do those iconographical sources reflect the instrumentarium used in biblical and later times and how closely do they reflect the instrumentarium used by Jewish (and other) musicians, especially klezmorim at time the images where created? In this essay I will consider mainly the period from the 18th century up to the present, focusing on all the central and eastern historically Polish territories, excluding Silesia and Pomerania where Jewish culture had a different, more assimilated character than in central lands. One must remember that until the 18th century the Polish Kingdom (since the 16th century the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth) included the lands of Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine. -

As you may know, the Aspen Institute Germany is a non-partisan, privately supported organization dedicated to values-based leadership in addressing the toughest policy challenges of the day. As you will see from the reports on the Aspen European Strategy Forum, Iran, Syria, Lebanon and the Balkans that follow, a significant part of Aspen’s current work is devoted to promoting dialogue between key stakeholders on the most important strategic issues and to building lasting ties and constructive exchanges between leaders in North America, Europe and the Near East. The reports on the various events that Aspen convened in 2007 and 2008 show how Aspen achieves this: by bringing together interdisciplinary groups of decision makers and experts from business, academia, politics and the arts that might otherwise not meet. These groups are convened in small-scale conferences, seminars and discussion groups to consider complex issues in depth, in the spirit of neutrality and open mindedness needed for a genuine search for common ground and viable solutions. The Aspen Institute organizes a program on leadership development. In the course of 2007 and 2008, this program brought leaders from Germany, Lebanon, the Balkans and the United States of America together to explore the importance of values-based leadership together with one another. -

Buse (Department of History, Laurentian University)Published on H- German (January, 2006) Travel Writing on Postwar Germany Ulrich Giersch's book, Walking Through Time in Weimar: A Criss-Cross Guide to Cultural History, Weaving Between Goethe's Home and Buchenwald (1999) set Goethe's idyllic house, garden, and literary works against the horrors of the nearby Buchenwald concentration camp. Ralph Giordano, the moralist and philosopher who had previously taken Germans to task for not addressing their past, authored Deutschlandreise: Aufzeichnung aus einer schwierigen Heimat (1998). He too noted the Weimar and Buchenwald contrast as he wandered throughout his country revealing warts and novelties. He acknowledged the difficulties of selection as he criss-crossed the past and the present of his homeland trying to find out what Germans thought. Interwoven with his findings were allusions to earlier literary works, including other travel accounts. He concluded that in 1996 his country was a very different place than during the first half of the twentieth century. Gone were the militarists, the loud antisemites, the horrid jurists, the révanchists, and the profiteers from Rhine and Ruhr whom Kurt Tucholsky satirized so well. Giordano closed by citing Tucholsky on the necessity for "the quiet love of our Heimat" adding a definitive "Ja!" The French travel writer Patrick Démerin in Voyage en Allemagne (1988) wrote just before the Berlin Wall opened. -
