Music in the Bible By Theodore W. Burgh Music is an essential element of ancient and modern cultures. It often shapes chronological periods, as did the Motown recordings of the 1960’s and 70’s, and marks what we grieve and celebrate. While many of the uses of music in the ancient Near East are similar to those of today, the sound and experience of music in ancient times was different. It is hard for us to imagine not being able to pull music from the air and download it upon request. In antiquity, people only heard music in live musical performances. Nothing was recorded, sampled, mixed, or mass-marketed. Although we don’t know how ancient music sounded, judging from the ways it was used we do know that music was important then as it is now. By studying the ancient remains of instruments, descriptions of musical activity in texts like the Bible, and artistic representations, we gain valuable information about these enigmatic past societies and peoples—from aspects of relationships between men and women, the types of instruments used in sacred and secular performances, and occasions when music was performed. A glance at several biblical stories reveals the importance of music in the daily life of antiquity. For instance, writers describe how people used music to express an array of emotions, convey valuable information, and entertain. Moreover, there are numerous ceremonies and celebrations in the Bible where musical performance was a major part. Several passages contain descriptions of actual instruments, names of musicians, as well as places and times music was played. -

His parents were Itzchak and Pessia. His brothers were Moshe, born in 1920; Chana, born in 1924, and a sister Ida, born in 1930. He was born in Lakhva, Polesia, in eastern Poland. The village was 80 km to the east of Pinsk, and 300 km east of Brisk [Brest]. The village was built on swamp land, K'which made it impossible for any means of transport, except in the winter, when the land froze. 3.13 While he was still a child, Kopel and his family moved to another village, Sinkevichi, 11 km away, to allow time to build a new house in Lakhva. 4.50 The family moved back to Lakhva after the birth of Ida, in 1930. The festive opening of the house, saw all the Jews in town as guests [there were about 1200] and lasted many days. 5.40 Kopel's father was in the lumber business. The family had its own saw mill and also a flour mill,60 km away, in the village of Tchelornietz [?] where his paternal grandparents and an aunt lived. The travel there, on horseback, took 20 hours, with a stop-over. In the summer, K's family would spend a month there, in a large house. They were well-off and the father could afford to send his sons to the Lakhva Hebrew school, where they demanded tuition payment. -

JACK KUGELMASS Arizona State University ANNAMARIA ORLA-BUKOWSKA The Jagiellonian University, Krakow "If You Build it They Will Come": Recreating an Historic Jewish District in Post-Communist Krakow AS POLAND COMPLETES the privatization of its economy and attracts increasing foreign investment, a district such as the Kazimierz section of Krakow faces a new dilemma—how best to regulate new construction and renovations in order to preserve its historic character. The largest intact and unrestored former-Jewish quarter in Europe, the area has considerable international significance, and particularly now as foreign Jews visit Poland in increasing numbers searching for the remains of pre-war Jewish life while Christian and Jewish Poles seek some way to restore the past, to undo the ravages of Nazi occupation and forty years of communism. [Krakow, Jews, post-communism, identities, performance theory] HE AMERICAN-JEWISH IMAGE of the anti-Semitic Polish peasant—someone who imbibed Jew hatred with his mother's T milk, to use the former Israeli prime minister, Yitzhak Shamir's characterization—is a gross exaggeration: Even in the 1930s just under twenty-five percent of Polish Jews lived or worked in rural areas as innkeepers, smiths, tailors, shoemakers, and petty merchants or peddlers, and memoirs of the period note anti-Semitism as a developing problem rather than an essential aspect of Catholic/Jewish relations (Kugelmass and Boyarin 1998). Poland has its history of Jew hatred, albeit, not as long or as deeply ingrained as popular lore would have us believe. It also has a substantial history of intergroup cooperation, particularly where occupations were complementary rather than overlapping, that is in small 315 316 City & Society towns and rural areas fOrla-Bukowska 1994). -

JGSCV’s December program was the answer to that request— on Genetic Genealogy Demystified with Elise Friedman who is a consultant to both FamilyTree DNA and JewishGen on DNA. There were many questions, and some members took DNA tests. The presentation was an erudite glimpse in the complicated world of genetic DNA. The program coincided with FamilyTree DNA’s Chanukah special pricing. Traditional and Historical Scottish Harps by Bill Taylor WHY DISTINGUISH between traditional and historical harps? It is not an easy question to answer. In its true sense, traditional means that which is passed on by word of mouth from one generation to another. Indeed, it means we’ve always done it this way . Harp playing right now is in the midst of a tremendous revival. Given that harps have been played for thousands of years, it would follow that there is no single harp which can claim to be traditional. Rather, there are many different harp traditions which span the centuries and the globe. Harp terminology is a minefield. Nowadays, we speak loosely of ‘clarsach,’ ‘Irish harp,’ ‘neo-Irish harp,’ etc, without really knowing the fine distinctions of these words. It was the same in the ancient and medieval worlds: cithara, lyra, rotta and harpa, were all seemingly interchangeable names for a number of different stringed instruments. Terms which described particular instruments in one culture came to mean something else at another time or place. Although the word remained the same, the instrument it referred to changed. Nowhere is this more apparent than in our modern English Bibles. In the King James Bible, Psalm 150 reads: Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. It is clear that many different instruments were used in Old Testament times, but whatever they were they weren’t modern trumpets, pipe organs and pedal harps. -
