So all of a sudden it happens my favorite song ended up as number one, and lets face it… WOW, who knew anything about Celine Dion back in 1988? The Swiss entry, ”Ne partez pas sans moi” stole the crown this year at the end of the voting, thanks to Yugoslavias jury for some reason agreed with the French singer Gerard Lenorman that his entry was of the same class as ”My way” (”Comme d´habitude”). And I can imagine that the UK singer Scott Fitzgerald was a bit surprised over the outcome. In ans case, not only Celine Dion started her way to success this year, also Lara Fabian entered, but for Luxembourg. So how did my list compare to the final result this year. We had some really good entries but 1988 must be seen as a middle year even if songs like ”Pu og peir”, ”Nauravat Silmät muistetaan”, ”La chica que yo quiro” and ”Ka du se hva jeg sa”. Sweden sent our number one musical star Mr Tommy Körberg who went from the stages of the London musical scene to Eurovision (his second try) and for Swedish media it was all in the bag, Eurovision from Sweden 1989.. It turned out to be very wrong and the Swedish delegation blamed Tommys bad cold and voice problems.

Without his watchful eye, advice, and inexhaustible patience, this dissertation would have never seen the light of day. Drs. James A. Parente, Andrew Scheil, and Ray Wakefield also deserve thanks for their willingness to serve on the committee. Special gratitude goes to Dr. Parente for reading suggestions and leadership during the latter part of my graduate school career. His practical approach, willingness to meet with me on multiple occasions, and ability to explain the intricacies of the university system are deeply appreciated. I have also been helped by a number of scholars outside of Minnesota. The material discussed in the second chapter of the dissertation is a reformulated, expanded, and improved version of my article appearing in Daphnis 43.2. Although the central thesis is now radically different, I would still like to thank Drs. Ulrich Seelbach and Alexander Schwarz for their editorial work during that time, especially as they directed my attention to additional information and material within the S1515 chapbook.

His hands-on approach and ability to pick product helped put J. Crew back on the map when he took the helm as chief executive offi cer and chairman in 2003. And he will be a very diffi cult man to replace when he decides to step down. Especially now that the company is experiencing a period of slower growth. Late Wednesday, J. Crew said refi nancing costs pushed it to a loss in the fi rst quarter, while adjusted earnings fell and comparable company sales declined 2 percent (after 5 percent growth a year earlier). It was J. They are for a very large part the fruits of the places and organizations one works or is supported by, the communities one lives in and traverses, and the people one loves and is loved by. First of all, I would like to acknowledge the support I received from the following institutions: the American Council of Learned Societies, the Huygens Scholarship Program of the Dutch government, the Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds (The Netherlands), and, at the University of Minnesota, the Center for German & European Studies (and its donor Hella Mears), the Graduate School (and the Harold Leonard Memorial Fellowship in Film Study), as well as the Department of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature. As for my home department, I could not have wished for a warmer and more intellectually vibrant community to pursue my graduate studies, and I express my gratitude to all who I have worked with. A special word of thanks to my academic adviser, Cesare Casarino, who has taught me how to read many of the philosophies that, explicitly or implicitly, have shaped my thinking in the following pages, and who has made me see that cinema too is a form of thought.
