Far Eastern Korea cuisine has a rich culinary culture that has hosted many civilizations that serve as a bridge between past China and present. Thai, Korean and Chinese cuisines are the most remarkable ones among the Far Eastern Ethnic Food cuisines. Therefore, these three cuisines have been the main focus of this study. In this study, cuisines’ history and their development are explained by giving basic information about these three countries. After this step, the general characteristics of the cuisines of these countries are mentioned. Finally, some of the foods that are prominent in these countries and identified with these countries are explained in Article History: general terms. Portugal was the first European power to dominate the Eastern seas by bringing under their control key eastern trading ports like Ormuz, Malacca and Goa. Ormuz and Malacca slipped out from their hands but Goa continued to be an important port of the Portuguese in the East. The Portuguese naval operations at this port merits a detailed study on account of the role it played in the consolidation of their power in the Orient. The present work probes into various issues relating to the Portuguese shipping and shipbuilding operations in Goa from 1510 - 1780. The State, Democracy and Social Movements
The Dynamics of Conflict and Peace in Contemporary South Asia This book engages with the concept, true value, and function of democracy in South Asia against the background of real social conditions for the promotion of peaceful development in the region. In the book, the issue of peaceful social development is defined as the con- ditions under which the maintenance of social order and social development is achieved – not by violent compulsion but through the negotiation of intentions or interests among members of society. The book assesses the issue of peaceful social development and demonstrates that the maintenance of such conditions for long periods is a necessary requirement for the political, economic, and cultural development of a society and state. Chapters argue that, through the post-colo- nial historical trajectory of South Asia, it has become commonly understood that democracy is the better, if not the best, political system and value for that purpose. Additionally, the book claims that, while democratization and the deepening of democracy have been broadly discussed in the region, the peace that democracy is supposed to promote has been in serious danger, especially in the 21st century. A timely survey and re-evaluation of democracy and peaceful development in South Asia, this book will be of interest to academics in the field of South Asian Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies and Asian Politics and Security. Minoru Mio is a professor and the director of the Department of Globalization and Humanities at the National Museum of Ethnology, Japan. Shameerudeen: Christian History of East Indians of Guyana CLIFMOND SHAMEERUDEEN Christian History of East Indians of Guyana Historical Footprints Guyana is the only English-speaking country of South America and is part of the English-speaking Caribbean, mainly because of language, culture, and religious background. The formation of this multiethnic community is a result of many historical events. These events are viewed differently, depending on one’s ideology and school of thought. However, it is unde- niably true that the mass migration orchestrated by the British colonizers separated people groups from their places of origin over a span of hun- dreds of years and many generations. The British colonizers are responsible for transporting and settling la- borers from India to the West Indies. These individuals, known as East Indians, were recruited mainly for indentureship, to replace the freed African slaves on the sugar plantations. The indenture system began in 1838 in Guyana and ended in 1917 in the southern Caribbean region. It is estimated that 240,000 East Indians came to Guyana and 144,000 to Trinidad during the indentureship period (Barrow 1996:342). In Trinidad, sixty-eight percent of the East Indians brought during this period were males, while only thirty-eight percent were females (Vertovec 1992:101). A similar gender disparity was found in Guyana, where males were also in the majority (Singh 1993: 223). Experiences and Understandings of a Group of Sri Lankan Migrants in Australia with Type Two Diabetes Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March Two Thousand and Fourteen Prabhathi Basnayake Ralalage Centre for Health and Society University of Melbourne Thesis Abstract Diabetes is a key public health priority and a major health concern for many migrant communities including the Sri Lankan community here in Australia. Understanding people’s comprehensions of the disease and its management is essential to successfully address any related issues in order to avoid premature deaths and high public health costs. According to many health reports published over the past years Sri Lankan migrants have been identified as having a significantly higher prevalence of type two diabetes in Australia compared to the general Australian population. This ethnography revolves around a group of first generation Sri Lankan migrants with type two diabetes in Australia. This thesis relates their story of encountering and dealing with difficulties and complexities of migrant life while having to build a ‘successful’ life in Australia and also having to concurrently manage a chronic illness. While arguing that understanding of diabetes management cannot be just reduced or confined to level of compliance to medical advice and blood sugar measurement readings on the glucometer, I point out in the research that the stories of Sri Lankans with diabetes in a developed country are different to the stories of other South Asian migrants with diabetes living elsewhere in the world as examined in other studies. -
