I look forward to your participation at our events and all your support. I will do my best and hope to gain your cooperation as we continue to promote and preserve our history, culture and heritage of the descendants of the Far East and to foster the active participation of our youth. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the past board members for all their dedicated time and hard work, and especially thankful for Fundação Oriente for sponsoring our Lusitano Bulletin. This winter has brought plenty of rain to keep our reservoirs filled to end our drought. We have record snow fall in the Lake Tahoe region which may keep our ski resorts open to maybe June or July. This also marks the start of Spring where the weather is nice and you can join us outdoors in a variety of events planned for the next few months. This should be a good and exciting year. We started out by celebrating the Year of the Rooster with our Chinese New Year party in February which was enjoyed by many members and their friends and held at the Macau Cultural Center in Fremont. I read that Rooster years are rarely ever boring, so it’ll be a year with a lot of action. On March 11 we were invited as a special guest to the LAEF (Luso-American Education Foundation) Macaense Symposium which was held at San Jose State University. It was not only us but all the Casas of Macau in California. We had an excellent amount of representation where we were able to give a little background of each of the casas and about Macau with its relation to Portugal. On March 18 we had a casino trip to Cache Creek in celebration of Portuguese Immigrant week. The bus load of us had an enjoyable time in Cache Creek where some had a chance to win some extra spending money. Coming up on April 8 our next event will be the annual “Clambake” at Beresford Park in San Mateo serving the finest clams prepared by António “Toneco” Jorge da Silva in his special Algarve style recipe along with other Macanese dishes and desserts. As a special treat, Toneco’s latest cookbook “Macaense Cuisine – Origins Lusitano Bulletin Page 2 and evolution” sponsored by the International Institute of Macau will also be launched at this event. We also have some exciting events and a trip coming up in the year such as Lusitano’s very own Youth Encontro in San Francisco. Hope all our Youths 21+ participate in this function and we can show our guests the best of San Francisco and highlight the youths of our club which will be in August (see page 8). This year’s trip will be for the 100th Anniversary of our Lady of Fatima Apparitions in Fatima along with a visit to Southern Portugal in September under the Auspices of the Macau Cultural Center and Braga Travel. We look forward to a fun time with members of Lusitano, Casa de Macau, and UMA. I would like to wish you and your family a Happy Easter as well. May the spirit of Easter fill your heart with complete joy and peace. As a reminder we encourage our youth members to take advantage of the Lusitano Scholarship Grant, participate in the LAEF Cultural Youth Summer Camp to learn about our shared Portuguese Culture and take an active role in our club functions. I look forward to seeing all of you at our events and functions. Please feel free to give me any suggestions and comments to help keep you and our youth involved. Sincerely, Chris daRoza, President Our newly revamped Be Green! website is up.
