COURSE NUMBER: Biology 101
PREREQUISITE(S): Take ENG-100 and (MAT-101 or MAT-152) and RDG-100.
COURSE This course is a study of the scientific method, basic DESCRIPTIONS biochemistry, cell structure and function, cell physiology, cell reproduction and development, mendelian genetics, population genetics, natural selection, evolution, and ecology. Both macroevolution and microevolution will be addressed.

GRADING SYSTEM: 90 - 100 = A 80 - 89 = B 70 - 79 = C 60 - 69 = D Below - 59 = F
GRADE Lecture (5 written exams taken in = 40% CALCULATION testing Center on main campus) METHOD: Lab (3 practicals, paper, participation) = 40% Final Exam (mandatory & cumulative) = 20%

LECTURE EXAMS: All lecture exams (including the final exam) will be taken in the testing center on the Main Campus (East Building E3) during the testing center’s hours. You must bring Student or pictured ID with you. You will have 2 hours to take the exam which is available to you Mon-Friday on the specified dates located in the IMPORTANT DATES FILE IN BLACKBOARD. These are paper exams which consist of multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer, labeling, and drawing. *Content for each test is found within your textbook and powerpoints/ my video recorded lectures found under Blackboard
CONFIDENTIALITY: All students’ e-mail addresses may be available to other students in the class. Although some assignments in an online course may encourage or require peer communication, the instructor will make every effort to protect the confidentiality of any personal communication (for example, grades). However, you should recognize that e-mail and other electronic media are not secure; there is no guarantee of the privacy of your e-mail or other information.

ATTENDANCE An electronic e-mail is required from each student to the POLICY: instructor by the end of the drop/add period. At this time the Instructor will drop the student from the course if it is not received. There are 5 Saturday labs with mandatory attendance. (Dates and times are located under IMPORTANT DATES FILE on blackboard, these labs are completed on main campus East building E22)
There are NO makeup lab practicals or lecture exams, students are urged to reserve their absences for emergencies only. When illness or other emergencies occur, the student is responsible for notifying instructors PRIOR to the absence and complete missed work if approved for late submission by instructors. Instructors maintain attendance records. However, it is the student’s responsibility to withdraw from a course. A student who stops attending the online class and fails to initiate a withdrawal will remain on the class roster. With this in mind, for every assignment, test or exam not completed while still enrolled in the course the student will receive a grade of zero and the final course grade will be calculated accordingly.
Withdrawal Policy: During the first 75% of the course, a student may initiate withdrawal and receive a grade of W. A student cannot initiate a withdrawal during the last 25% of the course. Extenuating circumstances require documentation and approval by the appropriate department head and academic dean.

CLASS/LAB Preparation for class: PROCEDURES: 1. Read over the chapter(s) before viewing lectures. 2. View videotaped lectures under Panopto Lecture Capture 3. Read over the selected lab(s) before coming to lab. 4. Have respect for your fellow students and the instructor. Do not be disruptive in class. You will be asked to leave. 5. Pay attention and ask a lot of questions. 6. Lecture exams are available Monday-Friday in the Testing center on Main campus East building E3. Lab Grade Calculation: Attendance, participation = 5% 40% overall grade Rough Draft = 5% Final paper = 15% 3 Lab Practicals (25% each) = 75% ______=100%
Paper: You will be responsible for writing a scientific research paper. Your rough draft will be reviewed and corrected before you turn in your final paper. See blackboard for more info
Lab Practicals: 3 Lab exams are paper format, and are given during select Saturday lab dates. See schedule
LAB PROCEDURES: Preparation for lab: 1. Read over the lab before coming to class. 2. Come prepared to do the work each day. 3. Be in your place with text and lab manual at the beginning of the period. 4. Do not disturb the lab equipment that has been set out on the lab table until given instructions by the instructor. 5. Pay careful attention to the printed instructions. 6. Be considerate of your lab associates. Your activities may disturb them so they are unable to benefit from the lab. 7. Do your fair share of the work. Before you leave, be sure ALL equipment is cleaned up and put away, wastes discarded in the trashcan, your stool pushed in place, and the lab area cleaner than you found it.

8. No eating or smoking in the lab. Food and drinks should never be found on the lab tables. 9. Report immediately to the instructor any emergencies or injuries that occur. 9a. Safety goggles must be used during all wet labs. 10. No food or drinks are allowed on lab benches!
Attendance Policy: ______Students are responsible for punctual and regular attendance in all laboratories. It accounts for 5% on your lab grade. Lab is from 10:00-3:00 on the selected Saturdays shown below. There are NO LAB OR LAB EXAM MAKEUPS. Attendance will be taken hourly. Late lab reports will result in a deduction of 10 points/day late. They will not be accepted if they are more than a week late.
