"Ukrainians Abroad: From Exile and Emigration to the Formation of a Diaspora"

The dispersal of Ukrainians around the world was dictated by many circumstances, and in the course of a hundred and fifty years or more, many Ukrainian communities and organizations were formed on all continents. According to the , there are over twenty million people of Ukrainian descent living outside the borders of contemporary Ukraine. Some of these individuals trace the emigration of their forebears to the last decades of the nineteenth century. Others are recent migrants who were born in Ukraine. Indeed, the preparation of an issue dedicated to this subject is a timely one as in 2021 various anniversaries of Ukrainian settlements and diaspora institutions around the world will be marked.

As such anniversaries are being commemorated, important questions concerning the role and place of the in the world arise. What makes Ukrainian communities and organizations abroad vibrant and strong? When does a group of immigrants in a foreign country become an ethnic community, or a diasporic one? How do both “old” and “new” Ukrainian communities outside of Ukraine engage with Ukraine and participate in the now globally-defined phenomenon of the Ukrainian diaspora? What is the role and place of Ukrainians within the context of transnational history and globalization and what impact has the Ukrainian diaspora and its organizations had on the global stage? We invite contributions that engage with the above questions as well as other ones, and that reflect scholarly perspectives on the Ukrainian diaspora from Ukraine and abroad.

Specialists in any aspect of the Ukrainian diaspora are invited to submit papers to this special issue. We welcome submissions from various disciplines and interdisciplinary perspectives. The contributions may focus on particular case studies or offer comparative analysis of some aspects of the experience of Ukrainians abroad, both between communities or across various transnational contexts. Papers addressing the above questions while focusing on the political, cultural, intellectual, and social development and activities of Ukrainians abroad are especially welcome.
