Next time you hit at Skokie Sports Park, try swinging a club without moving your legs. Then go back to moving your legs during the swing. Why? So you can feel how much additional power your legs add to your swing. On average, your legs add 20-30 percent more power to your . To properly power up your legs, simply follow these moves. Move #1 At the top of your backswing, roughly 70-80 percent of your weight should be on the inside of your right foot. To initiate this, move your left knee inward a few inches toward your right knee as you continue to swing the club away from the . If you have to raise your left heel slightly that’s okay, but make sure that your right leg stays flexed and that your weight moves to the inside of the right foot. Not only will this create and store power, it also will prohibit one of the most harmful hitches in a golfer’s swing — the dreaded sway.

Move #2 Begin your downswing by driving your right knee toward your left. As you feel your weight shift to the left foot, make sure your left leg begins to straighten. When you are finished with your swing, more than 90 percent of your weight should be on your left foot and your left leg should be completely straight. A good rule of thumb is to hold your finish until the ball lands, or as I like to say, “pose for the camera.”

So work on “powering up” your swing at Skokie Sports Park. The next time you play, you might be deemed the group’s “big hitter,” or you might just like the fact that your favorite course will now seem shorter!

If you have a question for Chris or would like to schedule a lesson, call (773) 505-GOLF(4653) or email [email protected].
